A certain man named Yitzhak son of Avraham Elazar Yitzhak Mutzari
possessed a book of Psalms and a prayer book for the whole year.
And he would sit and pray and read from the two aforementioned books every single day -
When he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath and on festivals, he would carry
these two books in his hand - and he would read from them until the end of the prayer
and he would leave them in the synagogue and go to his home -
One time he forgot them in the synagogue and did not remember them until the Sabbath day -
He came to the synagogue and did not find them, and he suffered great grief over them.
After some days, a man came to him and said to him: I saw two books
in the house of so-and-so, and they are similar to your books - The aforementioned Yitzhak went to
that certain person and found them with him - He said to him: These books are mine
and I lost them in the synagogue - That certain person said to him:
I bought them from the market - The aforementioned Yitzhak said to him: For how much
did you buy them? - He said to him: For eighteen grush - Yitzhak said to him,
the aforementioned: Take eighteen grush and give me my books - He said to him,
that certain person: I will not give them to you unless you give me
twenty grush - The aforementioned Yitzhak said to him: Why do you want
two grush more from me? - That certain person said to him: Because of
my effort in going to the market and buying them - Yitzhak said to him,
the aforementioned: I will not give you more than eighteen grush -
And that certain person did not want to give him the books - The aforementioned
Yitzhak went to the Sage and told him the story - The Sage sent
for that certain person and he came to him - The Sage said to him:
Why do you not want to give Yitzhak his books? -
That certain person said to him ⟦...⟧

// And after he knew that this woman
reached her end and died in her husband's house, and she had from him
two daughters. She had a jewelry set, a face set, bedding, and cloth.
And all of that remained except for the cloth, for it was destroyed as mentioned in
the register. And since she had two daughters who reached maturity, and when
the aforementioned husband, who is the father of the two aforementioned daughters, died, he left male heirs
from another woman and heirs besides them. So the two daughters rose to demand the inheritance
of their mother from their father's estate. Their brothers said to them that your father
had consumed all that your mother inherited from her father and from
others, and from her dowry, and she had nothing left in his possession, and
what he left is his property alone and no one else's. But they did not believe them in that
and they brought their matter to the judge of the noble Sharia and mentioned that to him.
So he summoned the heirs of the aforementioned deceased and asked them about that. They answered similarly
to what they mentioned to the two daughters. So he requested evidence from them for that. So they brought
to the council of the noble Sharia two upright men who testified before the judge
of the Sharia that the aforementioned deceased, father of the two aforementioned daughters, had consumed
all that his wife, the mother of the two aforementioned daughters, inherited from her father
and from others, and all of her dowry during her life, and she died while she
was satisfied with him and was not demanding anything from him. They also testified
that all that the aforementioned deceased left is his property alone and no one else's.
So the aforementioned judge ruled according to the content of their testimony and bound
the two daughters to cease. And they are now demanding something from their father's estate
claiming that they have a right to that. So is that permissible for them according to Sharia
or not? Give us a legal opinion, and may you be rewarded.
The Answer
The aforementioned ruling is correct; it is not permissible for them to overturn it or to appeal it
in any way whatsoever. And this was written by the servant of God, exalted be He,
Moshe son of the honorable Master Sasson Ha-Levi.

the one who lacks one of the senses [p]. And it may be that he will not have children and will not have
in his end any obedience at all [p]. And he will not have a portion in this world nor in the
hereafter; and peace be upon him who follows the guidance, and God knows what is in the hearts.
Write these surahs two hundred times on Friday in the hour of Jupiter
and in the morning before the sun [rises], and dissolve them in one hundred and sixty-seven cups of water
and give it to the barren woman who does not give birth to drink, for she shall give birth by the permission of God
Exalted, and these surahs are these: O God, O He who is God, besides whom there is no god but He,
the Living, the Sustainer, whom neither slumber nor sleep overtakes. O He who is God, besides whom there is no god but He,
the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, the Compassionate, the Merciful. O He who is God, besides whom there is no god but He,
the King, the Holy, the Peace, the Giver of Faith, the Guardian, the Mighty, the Compeller, the Proud; glory be to God
above what they associate [with Him]. He is God, the Creator, the Producer, the Fashioner; to Him belong the most beautiful names; whatever
is in the heavens and the earth glorifies Him, and He is the Mighty, the Wise. O He who is God, besides whom there is no god but He,
the One, the Unique, the Single, the Eternal Refuge, who neither begets nor was begotten, and there is none co-equal to Him.
O God, O Living, O Sustainer, O Lord of Majesty and Honor, O He who is God, besides whom there is no
god but He, the High, the Great, for whom no 'how' is known, nor 'where', nor 'whither',
nor 'how' He is except Him. O He who is God, besides whom there is no god but He, whom
the senses do not perceive, and the eyes do not reach, but He reaches the eyes, and He is the Subtle,
the Great. O He who is God, besides whom there is no god but He, for whom no measure is known,
no limit is defined for Him, nor is He confined in a place, nor is any place devoid of Him. He is God,
besides whom there is no god but He, for whom no namesake is known, nor likeness, nor peer,
nor partner in His kingdom, nor helper in His handiwork, nor consultant in His governance,
nor minister in His authority, nor assistant in His power. O He who is God, besides whom
there is no god but He, for whom no female companion is known, nor a son.
And God knows what is in the hearts.

And he did evil in the sight of the Lord; he did not depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made
Israel to sin. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and He delivered them into the hand of Hazael king of Aram, and into the hand
of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael, all those days. And Jehoahaz besought the Lord, and the Lord hearkened unto him;
for He saw the oppression of Israel, how the king of Aram oppressed them. And the Lord gave Israel
a savior, so that they went out from under the hand of Aram; and the children of Israel dwelt in their tents, as in times
past. Nevertheless they departed not from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, who made Israel sin, but walked
therein; and there remained the Asherah also in Samaria. For he left to Jehoahaz of the people but fifty
horsemen, and ten chariots, and ten thousand footmen; for the king of Aram destroyed them, and made them like the dust
in threshing. Now the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz, and all that he did, and his might, are they not written in the book
of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? And Jehoahaz slept with his fathers; and they buried him in Samaria;
and Joash his son reigned in his stead. In the thirty and seventh year of Joash king of Judah began
Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz to reign over Israel in Samaria, and reigned sixteen years. And he did evil
in the sight of the Lord; he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel sin; but he walked
therein. Now the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did, and his might wherewith he fought against Amaziah
king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? And Joash slept
with his fathers; and Jeroboam sat upon his throne; and Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings
of Israel. Now Elisha was fallen sick of his sickness whereof he was to die; and Joash the king of Israel came down unto him,
and wept over his face, and said: 'My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and the horsemen thereof!' And Elisha said unto him: 'Take
bow and arrows'; and he took unto him bow and arrows. And he said to the king of Israel: 'Put thy hand upon the bow';
and he put his hand upon it. And Elisha laid his hands upon the king's hands. And he said: 'Open the window eastward'; and he opened it.
Then Elisha said: 'Shoot'; and he shot. And he said: 'The Lord's arrow of victory, even the arrow of victory against Aram; for thou shalt smite
the Arameans in Aphek, till thou have consumed them.' And he said: 'Take the arrows'; and he took them. And he said unto the king of Israel:
'Smite upon the ground'; and he smote thrice, and stayed. And the man of God was wroth with him, and said:
'Thou shouldest have smitten five or six times; then hadst thou smitten Aram till thou hadst consumed it; whereas now three
times thou shalt smite Aram.'
And Elisha died, and they buried him. Now the bands of the Moabites used to invade the land at the coming in of the year. And it came to pass, as they were burying
a man, that, behold, they spied a band; and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha; and as soon as the man
touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet. And Hazael king of Aram oppressed

Sermon for Purim
And the King said to Queen Esther, etc. What is your petition, and it shall be granted you? and what is your request? even to
half of the kingdom, and it shall be performed, etc. On this verse, the commentators, of blessed memory, raised a difficulty
for King Solomon, peace be upon him, said by the Holy Spirit: "The king's heart is like channels of water in the hand of the Lord; wherever
He wishes, He turns it." The explanation of the verse is thus: that the Holy One, Blessed be He, created the world and conducts it
according to His will, may He be blessed, and no obstacle in the world shall prevent Him. And even the kings,
who have the dominion and the power in their hands to do whatever their heart desires—despite all this,
their heart and their will are in the hand of the Lord, may He be blessed, and He inclines their heart toward whatever He desires.
And behold, it is known that nothing in the world happens by chance, rather everything is by providence
from the Lord, may He be blessed. And even when a person sees some trouble coming upon him, he should not attribute the matter
to chance, God forbid, but should believe with perfect faith that this was from the Lord as a result
of his sins. And as the verse says: "If you walk with Me in happenstance (Keri), then I will walk with you in the fury of
happenstance." The meaning is: if you say regarding the troubles coming upon you that they are by way of chance, then
I too will deliver you into the hand of chance and I will remove My providence from you. And behold,
it is known and famous how great the miracle was that was performed in the days of Mordecai and Esther, when
Haman the wicked sought to destroy, to kill, and to annihilate all the Jews, from young to old,
infants and women, in one day, and to plunder their goods. And the Holy One, Blessed be He, frustrated his counsel and spoiled his plan,
and returned his recompense upon his own head, and they hanged him and his sons on the tree which he had prepared for Mordecai.
And it was turned about, so that the Jews themselves had rule over those who hated them. And all of this was
a cause from the Lord, may He be blessed, in order to publicize His divinity in the world, and so that all should know that there is
a God who judges on the earth and watches over those below, and in His hand is the soul of every living thing.
And a king is not saved by the multitude of a host, and the king cannot do a small thing or a large thing
without the permission of the Creator, may He be blessed. And this is what the verse meant: "The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord," etc.
Therefore, when Queen Esther, peace be upon her, saw that evil was determined against her by Haman
the wicked, may his name be blotted out, she risked her life for her people and her kindred and entered before King
Ahasuerus to beseech him for her people. And behold, King Ahasuerus hated
Israel more than Haman the wicked, but he was afraid to do them harm because of
the Holy One, Blessed be He, for he had already seen what happened to Nebuchadnezzar and Belshazzar. And therefore, when
Haman the wicked came and asked him to write the letters to destroy the Jews,
the King said to him: "I am afraid of their God, lest He do to me as He did
to my predecessors." Haman the wicked answered him: "Their God is asleep and does not watch over them."

In the order of the perfection of <del>the Torah</del> witnessing concerning a religion for a people -
That glory, may God - exalted be He - grant victory and establish it in its place -
All that truth is proof of sincerity; it occurred for them on the third day of
that glory, we see the proof of sincerity is firm and the evidence is clear among
the seven nations. And that is among the proofs of sincerity cast into the minds of people.
And if religion were one for everyone, it would be correct, just as the truth
is one. Among the proofs of sincerity is that the word of God, exalted be He, be known
to be truthful; for it is the proof of sincerity, known by the evidence of reason and tradition
in the path of truth. First, that the prophet who calls to that be truthful in
the beginning of the matter. If the prophet is truthful, his word is correct and accepted.
If the seeker of truth is sincere, and if the prophet perceives the sincerity, it becomes
as if he has a motive, and the proof of sincerity in the heart of the prophet makes sincerity
born to him; and in the holy abode of perfection, he ate and drank from His hands
as if he sees God, exalted be He, and his word becomes the word of God, exalted be He, known
to be truthful in all that. The proof of sincerity would be clear and evident,
being a proof of the truthfulness of his claim even if it were without the evidence of reason.
Doubt would not befall him; rather, it would be the word of God, exalted be He, if he is truthful.
If the prophet called to that without proof, the prophet would be a liar,
and a liar cannot be a prophet, nor would the word of God, exalted be He, be known to him.
That would be without the evidence of reason and tradition; the word of the prophet would be
the word of God, exalted be He, known.

And I also remember the rest of the services for the Talmud in which we always labored –
and it was our danger and our opinion until all that became a reason because the owners
of this Talmud, upon their departure from Baghdad to our side, received news
from the side of Ibn Mu'allim that our money went into it otherwise
and that we did not deserve anything from him, and I do not know how the situation was
until we arrived here, and after we reached them, a letter reached them from Baghdad
and my master father Isaac Al-Masri, may he find mercy, saw it and looked over what
was in that letter, and among what was written in it was that they should know that we
emphasized our presence with them, and all that we ate and drank from them is
forbidden to us <del>and other things</del> and that we are thieves and burglars and other things from what
is shameful to mention. So when my master father Isaac the Priest heard that, he was pained
and his soul felt very small and he said to me: O my son, what is this news that we hear
behind you <del>⟦illegible⟧</del>? So I said to him: O my master, you know the truth and you know
that we did not steal and were not thieves, rather the one who attributes to us
this speech is an oppressor and aggressor against us. So he said to me: You are right,
but o my son, from now on you must not eat from
our food at all, nor drink anything, until the situation is clarified. So I stayed,
and my brother Joseph, buying our food and drink from our own money, and we did not
eat their provisions nor drink their water, and we remained patient through that
for a period of about a full year, until another letter reached them from
Baghdad informing them that the news that reached them was a lie
and that the man is innocent of all that, and that enemies merely transgressed against him and wrote against him
thus, and they believed their words. So when they saw that, their souls were appeased,
and my master father Isaac the Priest recited saying: Praise be to God who made manifest
the truth and justified the righteous and invalidated the words of the liars. And we returned to what
we were doing regarding eating and drinking with them as usual.

With God's help
And the holiness of our mistress Leah and Mrs. Esther daughter of Mr. Salha, may her soul be bound in the bundle of life
All the days of their lives from anger and pain, and may no illness rest upon them
And may it be Your will that You bless Mordechai Your servant for the commandment: Do not
multiply in your house, and the wages of a laborer shall not remain with you until morning, and do not oppress
your fellow, and do not rob. And may He give to Mordechai Your servant long life and all
that he does shall prosper, and no iniquity shall befall him. Both in his sitting
in his house and in his walking on the way, so that they shall not be ashamed and shall not be disgraced
and shall not stumble forever and ever; may kindness and truth preserve him; and the rest of
the members of his household may God bless with a complete blessing and may they merit to behold the pleasantness
of the Lord and to visit His temple, Amen. So may it be His will and let us say
Amen.
To Joseph, the son of mercy, who bound himself because of the subduing of his father (as it is written)
above, when they were going out on the way to buy grain in their straits, Reuben heard
the voice of a young boy who was crying on a rock; he heard that he was
saying: Woe to the seedling that does not see the face of its master.
The first fruit of a tree, for when he heard the sound of that young boy's crying, he trembled and was shaken
on his standing place and said: Surely this voice that I hear is from the holy
seed who cries over the separation from his father. What did he do? He ran after him,
found him sitting under a rock, and when he saw him, he cried and said:
My son, why do you do this to yourself? He said to him: How shall I not cry when all
the people of the world rest in their beds and I lie on the ground?
Every person has a father and a mother, and I have
neither father nor mother.

Parashat Va'etchanan ⟦as ordered⟧
1. Comfort, comfort My people, says your God. Speak to the heart of Jerusalem and call to her that her
time of service is completed, that her iniquity is pardoned, for she has received from the hand of the Lord double for all her sins. A voice calls out in the wilderness: Clear
the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and the uneven ground shall become
level, and the ridges a plain. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken. -
A voice says, "Call out!" And he said, "What shall I call out?" All flesh is grass, and all its goodness is like the flower of the field. The grass withers,
the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows upon it; surely the people is grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God
shall stand forever. Get yourself up on a high mountain, O herald of good news to Zion; lift up your voice with strength, O herald of good news to Jerusalem;
lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, "Behold your God!" Behold, the Lord God comes with might, and His arm
rules for Him; behold, His reward is with Him, and His recompense before Him. Like a shepherd He will graze His flock; in His arm He will gather the lambs
and carry them in His bosom; those that are nursing He will lead. Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out the heavens with a span, and comprehended the dust of
the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance? Who has meted out the spirit of the Lord, and who was His counselor that he might inform Him?
With whom did He take counsel, and who gave Him understanding, and taught Him in the path of justice, and taught Him knowledge, and showed Him the way of understanding?
Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket, and are accounted as the small dust of the balance; behold, the islands are like fine dust that is lifted up. And Lebanon is not enough for fuel,
nor its beasts enough for a burnt offering. All the nations are as nothing before Him; they are accounted by Him as less than nothing and vanity. To whom then will you liken
God? Or what likeness will you compare to Him? The idol, a craftsman casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold, and fashions silver chains.
He that is too poor for such an offering chooses a tree that will not rot; he seeks out a skilled craftsman to set up an idol that will not totter.
Do you not know? Do you not hear? Has it not been told to you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in;
who brings princes to nothing, and makes the judges of the earth as vanity. Scarcely are they planted, scarcely are they sown, scarcely has their stem taken root
in the earth, when He blows upon them and they wither, and the storm wind carries them away like stubble. To whom then will you liken Me, that I should be equal?
says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host by number, to all of them
He calls by name; by the greatness of His might and because He is strong in power, not one is missing. Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak,
O Israel, "My way is hidden from the Lord, and my judgment is passed over by my God"? Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, does not faint and is not weary; there is no searching of His understanding.

And likewise we ran like Salah Daoud, we received only without <del>doubt</del> and that house how
was the reason for our arrival at the head of the bridge on Tuesday at the hour of
12, and how we had a break at the end of the bridge, the people also stopped walking
on their feet for fear of the bridge, which was shaking from the multitude of people.
The rule of Turkey, we set our minds to walk to the house of Al-Hajj Yusuf Daoud.
Paid to <del>⟦illegible⟧</del> we wrote as a commander, an elder in the affairs of the house.
Paid on the day of 25 Tammuz in the year 5670, may God Almighty look upon us and mend our brokenness and mend
in this year, may He mend the brokenness of Israel and erase Amalek from under the heavens
as it is written <del>you shall erase the memory of Amalek</del> from under the heavens, do not forget.
And likewise on Friday we traveled from Baghdad the guarded, the exalted
to Hillah the lush, we arrived on the Holy Sabbath at the 11th hour.

in a thousand goodness and peace, and the world is deprived of Al-Hajj Salih Yusuf
who went to his world on the Holy Sabbath day, 11 Menachem [Av], the year 5670.
For the brokenness of the daughter of my people I am broken; I mourn; dismay has taken hold of me.
Like a time of sorrow and sighing, and sorrow and sighing shall flee, and everlasting joy upon
their heads they shall obtain, and sorrow and sighing shall flee, for the Lord has redeemed Jacob and ransomed him
from a hand stronger than his. Hallelujah. Praise, O servants of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord.
Let the name of the Lord be blessed from now and forever. From the rising of the sun to its setting,
the name of the Lord is praised. High above all nations is the Lord, above the heavens is His glory. Who is like the Lord
our God, who dwells on high, who humbles Himself to look upon the heavens and the earth?
He raises the poor from the dust, from the ash heaps He lifts the needy, to seat them with
nobles, with the nobles of His people. He settles the childless woman of the house as a happy mother of children.
Hallelujah. When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of foreign tongue,
Judah became His sanctuary, Israel His dominion. The sea saw and fled, the Jordan
turned backward. The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs.
What ails you, O sea, that you flee? O Jordan, that you turn backward? O mountains, that you skip
like rams? O hills, like lambs? Before the Lord, tremble, O earth, before the God
of Jacob, who turns the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a fountain of water.

And that Rabbi went and did according to all that Elijah the Prophet commanded him,

Translation of the Song of Songs
And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of
the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see
war, and they return to Egypt: But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of
the Red Sea: and the children of Israel went up armed out of the land of Egypt. —
And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him: for he had straitly sworn
the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you; and ye shall carry up
my bones away hence with you. — And they took their journey from Succoth, and encamped in Etham,
in the edge of the wilderness. — And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud,
to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go
by day and night: He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar
of fire by night, from before the people. — And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
Speak unto the children of Israel, that they turn and encamp before Pihahiroth, between
Migdol and the sea, over against Baalzephon: before it shall ye encamp by the sea. —
For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, They are entangled in the land, the wilderness hath shut them
in. — And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, that he shall follow after them; and I will be honoured
upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host; that the Egyptians may know that I am the Lord. And they did so. —

And therefore Rebecca was in the place of Sarah his mother, and this means the voice of
"And Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother," and it is translated that Isaac entered into
the tent of Sarah his mother. Until Rebecca died and was buried in the Cave of Machpelah,
and our father Jacob, peace be upon him, arose and buried her there. And the meaning of "into the tent of Sarah" means
to say that she became like Sarah his mother in her actions, from lighting the lamp and preparing
the leaven and the bread and the shadow of the cloud; therefore it is mentioned here in the verse "And Isaac brought her
into the tent of Sarah his mother," and it is translated that Isaac entered into the tent of Sarah
his mother. And the meaning of "kiba" is the tent, and in our time this is called the
Diwan. And the meaning of "to her tent" is to the tent of Sarah his mother, and this verse
is the last verse in the portion of Chayei Sarah, and it is the first verse of
the Haftarah "And Abraham was old, advanced in years." and it mentioned an addition ⟦more⟧ "And Abraham again
took a wife, and her name was Keturah." And our Sages of blessed memory said that she is Hagar the mother of Ishmael,
and she had two names, Hagar and Keturah. And she was named Keturah because she tied
herself from marriage after her departure from the house of our father Abraham, peace be upon him.
And the meaning of "Keturah" is derived from "knot" (kesher), and also because she was
perfumed with righteous deeds like the incense (ketoret). and it mentioned after that:
"And she bore him Zimran, and Jokshan, etc." And it mentioned after that:
"And Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac."
It means to say that he gave
him all the properties that he had, from livestock and other things, just as
the Blessed Hashem granted him. "But to the sons of the concubines whom Abraham had, he gave
gifts, and he sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, eastward to the land of the east."
It means to say that he gave them gifts and dismissed them from being near Isaac his son
while he was still alive, and sent them to the land of the East. and this is the meaning of
