You have the strength to extend power for Your mercies are upon You, strength will not fail to extend patience
and language, and the whole world's strength contains from Your mercy and Your greatness to contain Your power and You did not create
in the world <del>⟦illegible⟧</del> that would be similar as you have merited
And You wish to grant merit to the entire world so that they all do not perish and they all return in repentance
A great one went to study Torah with Hashem, and it is written 'For the lips of a priest should guard knowledge
and they should seek Torah from his mouth for he is an angel of the Lord of Hosts,' and if the Rabbi is similar to an angel
of the Lord of Hosts, they should seek Torah from his mouth, and if not, they should not seek Torah from his mouth. And it happened with a certain
Rabbi who was not decent, and people were saying bad things about him, and he was a great
student and had a great name and everyone was in need of his Torah, and he [the student] thought in his mind
to leave him and prevent himself from studying Torah from him, and afterwards he said, I will go
to such and such a Rabbi and ask him for advice on what to do. And he went to him and he said to him, My son, if
the Rabbi was similar to an angel of the Lord of Hosts, seek Torah from his mouth, and if not, do not seek
Torah from his mouth. And that student went and left that Rabbi and did not study anything more from him.
And after some days he saw in a dream, and behold the Rabbi is sitting and preaching and the Shekhinah is standing over him
<del>⟦illegible line⟧</del>
And the student also went in the dream and heard the sermon from the Rabbi and saw in the dream that the whole
world and the ministering angels hear the sermon, and the student woke up from his sleep
and said, Woe to me that I have lost such a good pearl, and he went to that wise man whom he had asked
for advice and said to him, I saw such and such in a dream. The wise man said to him, Dreams speak
vanity, and do not worry about the dream at all, and do not go to him to study Torah from him.
And it came to pass after these things that that Rabbi died and was buried with great honor, and that
student went to his grave and saw a snake coiled on his grave, and the student wanted
to throw a stone at the snake, and the snake opened its mouth and wanted to swallow the student.
A story about Elijah of blessed memory, may his memory be for a blessing.
Rabbi Joshua ben Levi said, once I was walking on the road and Elijah of blessed memory
was walking with me, and we were walking on the road and we reached the entrance of a house of a poor and needy man, and that
poor man had one cow from which he and the members of his household ate and made a living, and when that
poor man saw Rabbi Joshua and Elijah of blessed memory, he received them with a pleasant countenance.

Peace be upon him
To me 1901 Kislev
This letter came to me from my father, may God have mercy on him, and its reply is on the side of the aforementioned letter
And the reply is that I wrote to him that I entered into a partnership with K' Yehezkel
With a capital of 10 hundred (1000) Ottoman liras with a shop, and 6 hundred (600) liras from K' Yehezkel's side
The total is 16 thousand liras and the profit and loss are divided equally, except for the shop rent
which is upon us, and each one takes a salary of 100 rupees every month, and the household expenses
he pays from his pocket, and after the year we settle accounts and whatever remains of the profit we divide
equally; and I also wrote to him that Al-Hajj Salih Bash A'yan requested of me that I be
his agent in Basra just as K' Yosef Zilka was, and I wrote to him to inquire about that
because in my mind K' Yosef Zilka was not profiting anything from that, but rather was losing
from his own pocket as assistance to the aforementioned Hajj, so is it suitable for me to enter into that or not?
And the reply came to me from him saying to me: my son, it is not permissible for you to enter a partnership with K' Yehezkel
except after you take from him a wealthy and capable guarantor who will pay you your capital
and the profit when needed, and these words are correct and extremely sensible.
And as for the matter of Al-Hajj Salih Bash A'yan, he wrote to me
that this is goodness and a blessing because the Hajj is a great and capable man
and he might benefit you a lot in the future, and even if you lose
something small from your pocket it is no matter, for I
approve of that, and from God comes success.
And I entered the partnership with K' Yehezkel ⟦...⟧ without a guarantor and without a document
as he knows that, and from God is protection, and I wrote to Al-Hajj Salih Bash A'yan that
he should send me the authorizations and I am ready for all his services and now
we await a reply from Al-Hajj Salih Bash A'yan
He who left us, our God and Lord, Exalted is He, over that which will be a cause
in taking it within the totality of the goodness of God the Exalted, that shall be by His hand.
Since the eye would shed tears while it does not benefit it due to an excuse, even if from one aspect,
and that was occurring by His hand at the time that was written for him.
And I believe in that which was the end that reached to that,
and God said to him from His grace, may He make that a good outcome <del>⟦...⟧</del> and if that were
at any time, then He, the Exalted, shall have mercy. And if he refrained in that matter
regarding that which happened to him at that time, then God the Exalted shall make that
by His hand, and even if that were very difficult for him, He, the Exalted, shall make that easy for him.
And let him not fear anything at all, since that was from God the Exalted, so let him not fear anything
except He is One. For if he knows that thing is difficult for him, let him pray for
our prophet Moses, peace be upon him <del>⟦...⟧</del> and let him rely on God, for He is sufficient for him.
So there is no doubt that God the Exalted will make that good for him and for this place
from that thing which we mentioned, that it will be good for him and for all who
seek that for him. And if he believed regarding that, that it would become a matter of harm for him,
then that would be the cause of the righteousness of the people of that place and your family and all
the people, O my brother, listen –
at the time of that,
if there is something in your hand and you saw that thing becoming such, then do not
fear from that, that anything will come of it except that it will be for the good,
and that will be a cause for good for all people, and you will be the cause of that, O my brother.
So do not fear that thing and ask God the Exalted to make that for good and for blessing,
and to make that a sign for him and for everyone who sees it, by the permission of God the Exalted, for He is capable of that.
⟦...⟧ God the Exalted shall make that a cause of good and blessing by your hand, O my brother,
from that thing which we mentioned to you, that it will be for good and for health from that.
And peace be upon whoever follows the guidance and all who ⟦...⟧

From the total of what I wrote for my lord father and many such letters of meaning
which I found to be good and the accepted words of fine composition –
and likewise others from the strange anecdotes and witticisms
And I begin that with a sermon
in congratulation for the honor, O my lord, owner of the house, to you a thousand thousand greetings and passion in
in your house flourishing with goodness, through the turns of time, and may your life be long
and may you find joy in your children and your children's children, and as mentioned in the Prophet, happy are you and it is well with you
Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in the recesses of your house; your children like olive plants around your table
Behold, for thus shall the man be blessed who fears the Lord; the Lord bless you from Zion; and see the good of Jerusalem
all the days of your life; and see your children's children, peace be upon Israel, Amen, so may it be His will
Amen, Forever, Selah, and Eternity. O my lord, may God the Exalted make it a blessed house
and inhabited with goodness, happiness, blessing, and mercy upon you and upon all
the people of your house, great and small, and may He not show you any harm in it, nor let you hear in it
bad news, and may He grant you in it ample sustenance, and gather your family in it in goodness and
health, safety, mercy, and long life, and may He repel from you and from it all
dangers and calamities, and may He bring back to you the holidays and the passing years in it
in goodness, health, joy, and permanent continuous happiness, Amen O Lord of the worlds
I hope from God the Exalted that He makes it a blessed house, flourishing with its people, populated
with goodness, grace, blessing, and mercy, and may He grant you in it life, safety, and sustenance
ample, and an easy life, and goodness of soul, and clarity of mind, along with long life
and health of the body, and safety from all calamities and defects, and may He bring back to you
in it the holidays and the passing years, you and all who belong to you, and may you remain in
the protection of God and His care always, forever, eternally, Amen Forever Selah
On this day, which is the 21st of Tishrei in the year 5657, a transaction took place

the aforementioned Khoja Mordechai, and that the payment was completed from the hand of the aforementioned
Abraham Isaac for the children who are with them, and that what was received from Khoja Mordechai

Khoja the remainder of the receipt.

With God's help
And I shall begin in order
For if he does not steal the robbery and the theft and the lost item he shall not return them
which are in his hand and he shall admit to the truth, what is written after it? 'And the priest shall make atonement for him' etc.
The Holy One, Blessed be He, said to him: 'When you do this and return to Me with all your heart, I forgive you
for all that you have done' etc. and so it says: 'Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God'
etc. 'Take words with you and return to the Lord; say to Him: Forgive all iniquity and receive us graciously
so we will offer the bulls of our lips' etc. 'I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely' etc.
'I will be as the dew to Israel; he shall blossom as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon' etc.
'His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his fragrance as Lebanon. They that dwell under his shadow shall return;
they shall revive as the corn, and blossom as the vine; the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon' etc. 'Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? Prudent,
and he shall know them? For the ways of the Lord are right, and the just shall walk in them; but the transgressors shall fall therein'
etc. 'Who is a God like unto Thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He
retaineth not His anger for ever, because He delighteth in mercy. He will again have compassion upon us; He will subdue our iniquities;
and Thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. Thou wilt show faithfulness to Jacob, and mercy to Abraham,
which Thou hast sworn unto our fathers from the days of old' etc. 'Return, O Israel, unto the Lord thy God;
for thou hast stumbled in thine iniquity' etc. 'And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great horn shall be blown; and they shall come
that were lost in the land of Assyria, and they that were dispersed in the land of Egypt; and they shall worship the Lord in the holy
mountain at Jerusalem' etc. 'And the Lord shall be King over all the earth; in that day
shall the Lord be One, and His name One' etc. 'And they shall come to Zion with singing, and everlasting joy
upon their heads; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away' etc.
'Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, ye righteous; and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart' etc. 'Light is sown for the righteous,
and gladness for the upright in heart' etc. 'Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous; and give thanks at the remembrance of His holiness'
etc. 'May our eyes see and our heart rejoice and our soul exult in Your salvation in truth
Who says to Zion: Your God reigns' etc. 'The Lord shall reign for ever and ever, Amen and Amen'
The order of Vayikra is completed with the help of Him who dwells in the highest heavens
By the young one, Abdallah Abraham Joseph, may his Rock and Redeemer preserve him, the year 5660
You will slaughter our families along with our children, and we will be your slaves,
and you shall reign over the land. Thus spoke the King of Egypt to them; he answered and said to them,
'Do not fear, for I will show you kindness; sell your houses and your fields
and come to me, and I will give you silver and gold and every good thing; do not spare your belongings.'
And they did not know that the king spoke to them with cunning. And why did the king do all this?
Because he heard that they had silver and gold and precious stones and pearls,
and he wanted them to come to him and take them and go and leave their houses full
of every good thing, and they should take their silver and their gold and all that they had and come to
the king; and he would give them houses to dwell in, and vineyards and gardens and orchards, and they would dwell
securely and eat and drink and rejoice with great joy. And they dwelt there for five years,
and they would go and come to the king and to the ministers to see the king's face
and to ask of his welfare and the welfare of the queen, and they saw all that belonged to the king.
After five years, all the people of Egypt came before the king and said to him, 'Our lord
the king, how long will these Jews dwell with us in the land of Egypt while they
eat and drink and rejoice and see good, while we are in toil and great sorrow?
And now, if it please the king, let it be written to destroy them and to take all that they have.'
And the king answered and said to them, 'This thing that you have spoken is not good, to do
evil to them, for they came to take refuge in my shadow and ate my bread and drank my wine
and rejoiced in my joy; and now, how shall I stretch out my hand against them to harm them when they
have done me no evil, but only good have they done with me? And I have sworn to them
on the day they came to me that I would not do them harm all the days of my life, and they trusted
in my oath and dwelt with us securely; and now, how shall I do this evil thing,
and how shall I lift my face before their God? For He is the God of gods and the Lord
of lords, who shows no partiality and takes no bribe, and He executes justice for the orphan
and the widow, and loves the stranger, giving him bread and clothing. And you know what
He did to Pharaoh and to all his people and to all his army at the Red Sea, for He drowned them in the Red Sea
because they wanted to harm them. And now, guard your souls and do not speak
any more of these words, lest He be angry with you and with all your people and destroy you.'

Arrival on Friday, 20 Tammuz, year 5687
And he told me that Khawaja Ezra Khadhuri arrived from Baghdad and with him the fees
It is known that all the fees arrived and the letter that was with them, and the boy told me
That day was Friday, a conversation whose explanation would be long, along with the arrival of the letter
He ordered its permanence with me and said this letter is private to me, so there is no need for it to be with
In these days we are in the utmost confusion regarding the brother Eliyahu Yosef Meir
Since he arrived from Baghdad last Tuesday with the people of his house
And I was in Basra on Tuesday, and he told me the letter was with him, another
letter in which is all that happened, and he spoke many words with the brother Menashe Ezra
until the end of that, and today is our concern, Friday morning, a letter reached us from Baghdad
To Mr. Yehezkel, from that time we went to the station except that God decreed and what He willed
He did; they arrived safely with all their belongings. Khadhuri Shamash arrived privately
bringing the letter
This reached him, this is its answer, this is its meaning, O my brother, and so an atonement ⟦...⟧ deprived us of you
I thought he would have more humanity than this because I explained to him
sufficiently, and what will be my answer from your Excellency? Except that the letter arrived
inverted; the reason for that is that there must be honesty and love between us
and sincerity, and God willing that will be for the sake of reward, and the retribution will be from God Almighty
These are matters that God knows, He rewards people for their deeds, and God willing
I will see you in the best condition, and God willing it will be the last of the letters, and peace be upon everyone
And Khadhuri Shamash kisses your hands

to commit a sin with me, and I did not want to commit a sin.
And her father said to her: Do not cry, for this man who came to you
is not a man, but he is Satan.

And this story is written
in the book of the history of the kings, which Sennacherib king of Assyria composed in the time of King Hezekiah,
peace be upon him. And it is said in it that when he besieged Jerusalem and pressured it
very severely, and Rabshakeh went up and stood blaspheming and cursing and saying to them, 'Surrender the city,
otherwise I will make you eat [people's] dung and drink your urine.' When the people of Jerusalem heard that,
great fear came upon them, and they went to King Hezekiah and informed him of that. When
King Hezekiah heard that, he tore his clothes and wore sackcloth and entered the Holy Temple and prayed before
God, blessed be His name, and said, 'O Lord of the worlds, You know what has happened to us from these
infidels and how they blaspheme and curse us. So help us, O Lord of the worlds, with Your vast mercy,
and accept our prayer and answer our request and destroy them quickly, in the blink of an eye.'
At that time, Gabriel, peace be upon him, descended with a sword of fire in his hand and burned them
and killed one hundred and eighty-five thousand of them, and all that in a single moment.
And Sennacherib fled and escaped, he and whoever remained with him, to his land, humiliated and broken-hearted.
And it was only by the decree of God Almighty at the hands of the two sons of Sennacherib, Adrammelech and Sharezer,
that the two agreed to kill their father. When he entered to prostrate in the house of his idol, they struck him
with the sword and killed him, and they fled to the mountains of Ararat, and Esarhaddon his son reigned.
// And it is also told about Nebuchadnezzar //
that he loved Daniel, peace be upon him, very much and would never part from him,
nor could he eat or drink except in the presence of Daniel with him. On one of the days,
among the days, Daniel entered to see Nebuchadnezzar while he was sitting with a book in his hand
reading in it. When Nebuchadnezzar saw him, he stood up for him in glorification and greatness,
put it out of his hand, and Daniel sat down and continued talking with him for a long time. Then
Nebuchadnezzar said to Daniel, 'O my master, today I read in this book a strange story,
the likes of which I have never heard before, and it is about Sennacherib and what happened to him with Hezekiah
king of Judah, and how God Almighty destroyed them.'

It is not hidden from you, my lord, that my service to him lasted a long time for me,
five years in the house of Abu al-Baraka, and I suffered extreme exhaustion from it,
great exhaustion that neither male nor female can describe.
However, his words in the paper reminded me of a conversation I had with him.
That was one day when I was sitting at the door of my house, one
of the winter days, on a cloudy and rainy day, and suddenly an onion seller was calling out,
"A heap of garlic, onions! Who wants onions?" And I had a need for onions.
So I got up to him and said to him, "O you..." <del>⟦...⟧</del>
He said, "Yes, my lord, command me." So I said to him, "For how much do you sell this bundle
of onions?" He said to me, "O my lord, it is not too precious for you; take it without
payment." So I said to him, "This is not permissible."
⟦interlinear insertion start⟧
And it is not hidden from you, my lord, that onions at that time were expensive,
and people ate onions because of their hunger. May God help people with what He has tested them with,
from the oppression of the rulers, the high prices, and the scarcity of dirhams and dinars.
May God grant relief to us and to all Israel, Amen.
⟦interlinear insertion end⟧
So I hope, my lord, take
this from mentioning it, for we are ashamed to mention this word.
So he gave him permission to depart, and he took down the bundle from his head and began
to weep and say, "O my lord, I only came to you, and I only came
expelled, plundered, and hungry. And that, my dear lord, I hope you will hear
the news of that man whom you mentioned in the paper, the wanderings of that town,
that man who was called Abu al-Baraka, he is the root of the destruction of my house and the scattering
of my unity and the separation of my group and family and the ruin of my dwellings and the plundering of my wealth,
and I descended to the lowest of the low. If your eye could see what
happened to me from that ill-omened person, you would not blame me."

Thus he spoke in the ears of the whole congregation, and from his words everyone heard things that were not good
And you this day have known that this matter is not truth, but rather a lie
Things which were never so, and never entered into the heart of any man
Great falsehood he placed in his mouth, and on his lips are words of vanity and seduction
From vanity this matter emerged, and from words of wickedness and mockery together
Hearken now to me, for the deed which was done was not like this matter
But rather falsehood and deceit and an evil spirit and nothing more, and everything is neither valid nor
enduring, and these things never occurred, and not even one letter is true
Things not heard and that never entered the heart of man from forever until now
Neither has the likes of this been heard, nor was this matter at all or in substance
And the day on which this matter became known ⟦...⟧

Isaac said regarding this matter, that this thing is not good
which you have done this day to spread an evil report against this holy congregation. And how
could such a thing enter your hearts? Far be it from you to do this evil thing
which should not be done in Israel, and such shall not be among us, not now
nor in all the days of our lives forever, and all are words of vanity and emptiness
Hearken to me and do not believe words of falsehood and deceit in which there is no substance
but rather unformed and void, and a work of delusions they are, in which they will stray
all who walk crooked paths and all speakers of deceit and all talebearers
shall stumble in them, and every upright of way shall walk his path in safety and not stumble in them
For the ways of the Lord are straight, the righteous shall walk in them and the transgressors shall stumble in them
And peace be upon Israel and upon all who join them

And this is the answer that I replied to the complete and inclusive sage, Honorable Rabbi Moshe Hezekiah,
may his Rock and Redeemer protect him, because in the time of our master the Vizier of Basra, they sent from Constantinople a
Rabbi named Rabbi Joseph Hamad, and in this city of the Vizier of Basra there was
a governor whose honorable name was Alm' Daoud Pasha, and he hated the Rabbi
because he did not give him the honor of a minister and also did not want to swear falsely
on false matters which wicked men had libeled against him; therefore he hated
the aforementioned Rabbi in order to expel him from the city, and from his great hatred of the
aforementioned Rabbi ⟦illegible⟧ in order to expel him and also ⟦illegible⟧
*
And this is the incident that occurred: the aforementioned Vizier of Basra had a certain scribe
named Abdullah,
and he hated the Jews with an absolute hatred. And there was a certain Jew there
named Rabbi Ezekiel Gabbai, and he was a very wealthy man and he had great business
dealings with the aforementioned Vizier and also with the aforementioned scribe, and he had great honor
with the Vizier and also with the aforementioned scribe. And it came to pass one day that the aforementioned Vizier
needed a lot of money and sent for the aforementioned Jew and said to him: 'Lend me
one thousand silver talents.' And the aforementioned Jew did not have money at that time
and went to his house with a crushed spirit, for he knew that the aforementioned scribe would speak ill of him
before the Vizier and show him that the aforementioned Jew has much money and
did not want to give it to him. And the aforementioned Jew went to the house of the aforementioned scribe and fell at his feet
and said to him: 'My lord Scribe, the Vizier told me such and such, and I have no money
now, and I fear lest he speak ill of me before the Vizier. And I am prepared to give you
ten silver talents so that you may appease the mind of the Vizier and tell him that he has no
money now, and that he should wait for him until his goods arrive from the road.'

Three brothers remained
And whenever the brothers are mentioned, it refers to the three brothers as such.
And one of them had bought ⟦stain⟧ a house ⟦stain⟧ defined by these
boundaries. One is eastern, the other western, the other southern, and the other
northern. And one of them had bought a garden defined by these
boundaries. One is eastern, the other western, the other southern, and the other
northern. And one of them had bought a vineyard defined by these boundaries,
one is eastern, the other western, the other southern, and the other northern.
Then one of the three brothers died. So the two remaining ones stood up,
and their brother who died said to them: My brothers, I have nothing
except this daughter, and she shall be a trust with you. They said to him: Yes.
So he died and they buried him. This girl grew up and became a young woman.
This girl stood up and said to them: O my uncles, give me
the account of my father. They said to her: O my daughter, your father left nothing.
She said to them: How can it be that he left nothing when he bought a house, a garden,
and a vineyard? They said to her: O my daughter, this is not possible. So this
girl went to the judge and told him the story. The judge sent
for her uncles and they brought them, and the judge said to them: Why do you not
give this girl her right from her father? They said to him: O my lord,
her father left nothing. The girl said: O my lord, my father left
a house, a garden, and a vineyard. The judge said to them: Swear an oath to her
that her father left nothing and I will clear you. They said: Yes, O my lord,
we will swear. The judge said to them: Go today and come tomorrow
to swear. So they left the judge's presence and they were happy.
A dervish man met them on the road and said to them: Where are you
going, O righteous people? They said to him: We are going to swear
an oath before the judge and consume the property of our brother. This
dervish said to them: O righteous people, why do you swear falsely and consume
the property of the orphan? It is forbidden for you. Give her her right and be saved from
the punishment of Heaven. They said to him: This matter does not concern you, O dervish,
go on your way. He said to them: May God guide you.
So they went to their houses and they were determined
And likewise, he had no status, meaning he was not respected <del>by</del> by people,
until he entered a house where there was a righteous man going to visit the Prophet,
peace be upon him. So he said to him: My master, I want to go with you for the visit. He said
to him: My son, I cannot take you with me because you cannot endure hunger and I
do not eat anything. He said to him: My master, I will endure with you. So he took him with him and they walked
on the road. When it became midday, the boy became hungry and said to him: My master,
I am hungry. He said to him: My son, did I not tell you that you cannot endure hunger?
He said to him: You are right. So he was silent and walked with him until it became evening.
Then the boy became very hungry and said to him: My master, I am very hungry and I cannot
walk, my master, feed me.
⟦...⟧
And likewise, my son, take care not to have little certainty in God,
and let your certainty in God be strong, so your sustenance will come to you from where you do not expect.
And do not be like that man who used to know God in prosperity and did not
know Him in hardship. So God Almighty tested him and found him a liar in
his claim. And that was a man considered righteous by the people, always praying and fasting,
and worshipping God in prosperity and in ease. Then God sent an angel to him
in the form of a poor man, and he knocked on the door. So that man came out to him and said to him: Who are you?
He said to him: I am a poor and needy man, I want something from you for the sake of God.
So he shouted at him and drove him away. The angel returned to his Lord and said to Him: O Lord,
You know what happened. He said to him: O my angel, I know that this
servant only knows Me in prosperity and in ease, but in hardship
he denies Me. So God stripped the blessing from him and he became poor, going around
to the doors eating dry crusts. Then he regretted what he had done and said:
O Lord, repent for me and forgive me my sin. So God had mercy on him and returned to him
his wealth, and he came to know God in ease and in distress.

Murad, Shaul, and Meir, sons of the aforementioned deceased Saleh, the four of them

According to the opinion of the aforementioned Sage regarding the distribution of the estate of the aforementioned deceased Saleh, in accordance with

Regarding the matter of the mortgage dinar of the house, it is certain that it was from the property
of the young man David during the life of his father, the deceased Saleh, and that is by the admission of the aforementioned deceased Saleh
therefore he ruled that the aforementioned dinar shall return to the young man David (may his Rock and Redeemer protect him)
And as for the house, which is the property of the aforementioned deceased Saleh, in which dwells
his son, the young man David (may his Rock and Redeemer protect him), and the lower floor is Kohanim, he ruled that it
be shared with his brothers equally according to the law; and from the side of the shops
the aforementioned, and all that is produced from their rent, he ruled that they shall be
shared among them all equally without difference; and it is not hidden
that the source of the shops was a house belonging to the deceased Saleh and it became shops
And from the side of the draft document which is in the handwriting of the aforementioned deceased Saleh, it was seen
that he is giving and granting the house of Mr. Isaac Cohen and the house of Al-Ajami
to the young man David (may his Rock and Redeemer protect him), he ruled that they shall belong to the young man David (may his Rock and Redeemer protect him); and the reason for the matter
is that the handwriting proves it, that he transfers them to the young man David during his lifetime
and that he bought the house of Al-Ajami from the property of the young man David (may his Rock and Redeemer protect him) according to
what his aforementioned handwriting testifies; and from the side of the house which is
next to the house of Al-Ajami, which is the property of the aforementioned deceased Saleh, he ruled that it
shall belong to the young man David (may his Rock and Redeemer protect him), because he built this new building
it was a ruin and became a house, and that was from his property according to what testifies
his aforementioned handwriting; and from the side of the two ruins that are from the side
of the aforementioned house, he ruled that they shall be shared among them all equally
and all that is produced from their rent shall be among them equally
And with that they were satisfied and accepted upon themselves a complete and perfect acquisition from now, not
as an asmakhta and not as a prototype of documents, with the cancellation of all notifications and notifications of notifications

⟦Chapter⟧ In it is read the Book of Psalms
And the Prophet David, peace be upon him, said in Psalm 68 - Likewise do with them, O Lord of the
worlds, and set over them a harsh angel to drive them away and cast them down, and let
their path be dark and slippery, with the angel of the Lord pursuing them for what they did to me.
And David, peace be upon him, also said in Psalm 109 - Set a wicked man over him, and let an accuser stand
at his right hand etc. When he is judged, let him come forth guilty, and let his prayer be counted as sin. Let his days be few,
and let another take his office. Let his children be orphans and his wife a widow. Let his
children wander and beg, and seek bread from their ruins. Let the creditor seize all that he has, and let strangers plunder his labor.
Let there be none to extend kindness to him, and let there be none to favor his orphans. Let his posterity be cut off,
and in the following generation let their name be blotted out. Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered by the Lord, and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out.
Let them be before the Lord continually, that He may cut off the memory of them from the earth. Because he did not remember to show kindness,
but persecuted the poor and needy man, and the brokenhearted, to put them to death. As he loved cursing, so let it come to him;
as he did not delight in blessing, so let it be far from him. As he clothed himself with cursing as with his garment, so let it come into his body like water,
and like oil into his bones. Let it be to him like the garment which covers him, and for a belt wherewith he is girded continually. Let this be the reward of
my accusers from the Lord, and of them that speak evil against my soul etc. But do You for me, O God the Lord,
for Your name's sake; because Your mercy is good, deliver me. For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.
I am gone like a shadow when it declines; I am tossed up and down as the locust. My knees are weak through fasting, and my flesh fails of fatness.
I became also a reproach unto them; when they looked upon me they shaked their heads. Help me, O Lord my God; O save me
according to Your mercy. That they may know that this is Your hand; that You, Lord, have done it. Let them curse, but You bless;
when they arise, let them be ashamed; but let Your servant rejoice. Let my accusers be clothed with shame, and let them cover themselves with their own confusion, as with a mantle.
I will greatly praise the Lord with my mouth; yea, I will praise Him among the multitude. For He shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him
from those that condemn his soul. And he also said in Psalm 35 - Plead my cause, O Lord, with them that strive with me; fight against
them that fight against me. Take hold of shield and buckler, and stand up for my help. Draw out also the spear, and stop the way against them that persecute me;
say unto my soul, I am thy salvation. Let them be confounded and put to shame that seek after my soul; let them be turned back and brought to confusion
that devise my hurt. Let them be as chaff before the wind; and let the angel of the Lord chase them. Let their way be dark
and slippery; and let the angel of the Lord persecute them. For without cause have they hid for me their net in a pit, which without cause they have digged
for my soul. Let destruction come upon him at unawares; and let his net that he hath hid catch himself; into that very destruction let him fall.
And my soul shall be joyful in the Lord; it shall rejoice in His salvation. All my bones shall say, Lord, who is like unto You, who delivers
the poor from him that is too strong for him, yea, the poor and the needy from him that spoils him? False witnesses did rise up; they laid to my charge things that I knew not.
They rewarded me evil for good to the spoiling of my soul.
I will thank You, for You have answered me and become my salvation. The stone the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.
This was from the Lord; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it. Please, O Lord, deliver us; please, O Lord, grant us success.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; we bless you from the house of the Lord. The Lord is God, and He has given us light; bind the festival offering
with cords to the horns of the altar. You are my God, and I will thank You; You are my God, and I will exalt You. Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
for His mercy endures forever. May all Your works praise You, O Lord our God; and Your pious ones, the righteous who do Your will,
and all Your people, the House of Israel, with song shall thank, bless, praise, glorify, exalt,
revere, sanctify, and declare the sovereignty of Your name, our King. For it is good to thank You, and it is pleasant to sing to Your name,
for from eternity to eternity You are God. Blessed are You, Lord, King who is lauded with praises.
May all Your works praise You, O Lord our God; and Your pious ones, the righteous who do Your will, and all Your people,
the House of Israel, with song shall thank, bless, praise, glorify, praise, exalt, and revere,
sanctify, and declare the sovereignty of Your name, our King. For it is good to thank You, and it is pleasant to sing to Your name,
for from eternity to eternity You are God. Blessed are You, Lord, King who is lauded with praises.
It is our duty to praise the Master of all, to attribute greatness to the Creator of the beginning, for He has not made us like the nations of the lands,
nor placed us like the families of the earth; He has not made our portion like theirs, nor our lot like all their multitude.
For they bow to vanity and emptiness and pray to a god who cannot save. But we bend the knee,
bow, and give thanks before the King of kings, the Holy One, Blessed be He. For He stretches out
the heavens and establishes the earth, the seat of His glory is in the heavens above and the presence of His power is in the highest heights.
He is our God and there is no other; true is our King and there is nothing besides Him, as it is written in His Torah: "And you shall know
this day and take it to your heart that the Lord is God in the heavens above and on the earth
below; there is no other." Therefore we put our hope in You, O Lord our God, to see quickly the glory of Your strength,
to remove abominations from the earth and the idols shall be utterly cut off, to perfect the world under the kingdom of the Almighty.
And all flesh shall call upon Your name, to turn all the wicked of the earth toward You. They shall recognize and know,
all the inhabitants of the world, that to You every knee must bend and every tongue must swear. Before You, Lord our God,
they shall bend and fall, and to the glory of Your precious name they shall give honor, and they shall all accept the yoke of Your kingdom,
and You shall reign over them quickly forever and ever. For the kingdom is Yours, and for all eternity
You shall reign in glory, as it is written in Your Torah: "The Lord shall reign forever and ever." And it is said: "And the
Lord shall be King over all the earth; on that day the Lord shall be one and His name one."
Israel is saved by the Lord with an everlasting salvation; you shall not be ashamed or confounded forever and ever.

And after the passing of the aforementioned Rabbi to his eternal home, Rabbi Moshe remained -
his son sat on the chair of teaching and disseminated Torah in Israel
and he was a great scholar and proficient in laws and led the congregation with mercy
and he was beloved above and pleasant below and all the people would listen
to him and honor him very much and there was a certain man in his days
who was the head of all the Jews, his name was Aga Moshe <del>⟦illegible⟧</del> and he was
very wealthy and he had a place with the Minister and he had the Minister's ear
and he had great power and he was a man of evil deeds
and a person of controversy and haughty of heart and he hated the scholars
and he would persecute them and distress them and would go to the courts of gentiles
and he would inform on them and deliver them into the hands of the gentiles and would cause
them many and evil troubles until the scholars fled from him
and they went to another land because of his awe and fear
and also the aforementioned Rabbi, Rabbi Moshe, he would persecute and distress him
greatly and would humiliate him in public and would taunt and blaspheme
and would say things about him which were not so <del>⟦illegible⟧</del> and he was
humiliating Torah scholars and those who study Torah and he was
saying we have no need for rabbis nor for scholars but rather
we will study Torah for ourselves and issue rulings for ourselves
and we will not listen to the words of the Rabbi and will not follow his statutes because all
his words are vanity and a vexation of spirit and he would go on boasting and was
despising the Torah and those who study it and would say who is
this Rabbi and who is he that we should listen to him and do as he says behold
he is flesh and blood like us and has no advantage over us and why should we show
favor to him and do his will <del>⟦illegible⟧</del> ⟦illegible⟧ over this matter the controversy increased
in the city and opinions multiplied and the congregation was split into pieces and became various factions

And when the holy place was this, she responded to it and brought the inkwell to it
immediately for its service, and she came to the presence of the Caliph in service to him. And he wanted
to write but did not find an inkwell, so he called out: O girl, bring the inkwell!
The girl said: O my lord and master, the inkwell is in the niche. So the Caliph said to her:
O girl, climb up and bring the inkwell. She said to him: O my lord,
the ladder is broken, <del>and I</del> fear I will fall and be injured. So the Caliph said to her:
I will crouch my body to be a step for you to climb upon and bring the inkwell.
The girl said: O my lord, I fear you will be hurt by the sandals. So he said to her:
Take off the sandals and ascend upon my body and bring the inkwell. So she took off the sandals,
climbed upon the body of the Caliph, brought the inkwell, and delivered it into the hand
of the Caliph. When she descended from his body, she stood before him,
raised her head to the heavens and said: O Lord of the Worlds, O Creator
of all, O Lord,
if that which I have done pleases You and lets me have this night
its service always, then forgive me all sins and transgressions
and those which I am in, and what I have done in my life without Your will, O Lord
of the Worlds, O Creator of all, hear my prayer and answer my supplication, O Lord of
Lords, O Lord of Mercy, O Lord of Forgiveness, O Lord of Pardon, O Lord of Mercy,
my God, my Lord, and my Master, will You turn me back disappointed from Your mercy, O Lord of the Worlds?
When the Caliph heard her words and her tears flowing down her cheeks like heavy
rain, he wept with her and continued weeping over what had happened to him regarding sins
and transgressions. He said to her: O girl, what is this weeping and what is this sadness?
She said to him: O my lord, know, O my lord, that for seven years I have not slept
on this night until I perform this prayer and ask of God Almighty
to forgive me my sins and the sins of my parents.

Wednesday, 25th of Adar
Ah, we arrived at the lands of Kut. When we entered the market, a decree descended upon us from
the ruler: do not buy from the shops of the Jews nor from others, just
pass through the lands and go. My group and I are afraid there might be a rebellion. Our fear increased because of the
soldiers who came out with us from Baghdad to Kut. Furthermore, we heard that
behind us <del>⟦illegible⟧</del> were five hundred horsemen from the Arabs of the Khaza'il tribe
outside the city, and you cannot imagine my fear on that day and at that hour.
We did not feel safe until we reached the Beni Saad region and ran as we did that day.
And from Beni Saad to Baghdad we ran like the running of horses
traveling with the caravan. And out of fear of the Arabs when they come out to take us,
we traveled with the caravan <del>⟦illegible⟧</del> we reached Baghdad on Friday morning.
Praise be to God for the safety. I had written a letter to you in
Hilla and a letter in Kut with the Pasha's messenger, which will reach you, God willing.
What I am informing you is that I received your dear letter and I rejoiced with it with the greatest
joy. And that day was for me <del>⟦illegible⟧</del> a great feast,
freedom from the worry I was in regarding you; may God gather us
with you in goodness and safety <del>⟦illegible⟧</del> in the nearest time, for the sake of
your children; and Khalil Abu Yusuf is safe and his affairs are prospering. As for his growth, he plays
with the small circle as is known to you and as I wrote to you
in the letter from Hilla and the letter from Kut. We arrived in Baghdad on
Friday, safe and successful, and to God be the praise and the favor for that. It is not hidden from you,
my brother, that I am troubled in mind regarding the sugar, and the world
is turned upside down. On Friday we arrived, and on Saturday we went to the market,
but we saw no one buying or selling. May God mend the situation
and gather us with you in goodness and safety.

Laws of ⟦covering the seat⟧
It is forbidden for a person to eat meat until he loosens his belt, and if he was without a belt
it is forbidden for him to eat until he covers his heart, for until he loosens his belt ⟦he is constricted⟧
and he cannot eat except bent over and a little as mentioned, and he blesses HaMotzi, and if
he forgot and blessed while sitting upright, he must go back and bless while bent over.
And it is permitted to use his bed on Yom Kippur and even on Shabbat and Festivals.
And it is forbidden to recite Grace after Meals except when he is sitting and settled in his garments.
And if he was walking on the way and ate while walking, he must sit and bless.
And even if riding on a donkey, he must descend and bless. And if he cannot descend
because of the trouble or because of danger, it is permitted to bless while he is riding.
But if he was sitting inside the house and ate while sitting and forgot
and stood up and went from his place before he blessed, he must return to his place and bless.
And if he blessed in the place where he remembered, he has fulfilled the obligation. And if he was constrained, such as
he forgot and also due to constraint, or if he erred and thought he did not need to return
to his place and blessed in the place where he remembered, he has fulfilled the obligation. And so if he was very hungry
and ate while walking or standing, he has fulfilled it ex post facto, and he must bless standing
in the place where he finished his meal, even if there was no bread there. And if he was
eating and walking inside the house, it is considered sitting and he does not need to return to his place
but rather blesses in the place where he finished his meal. And if he ate in one place
and came to another place and finished his meal there, he must bless in the place
where he finished his meal, specifically if he ate a k'zayit in the second place. But if he did not
eat a k'zayit in the second place, he must return to the first place and bless.
And if he blessed in the second place, he has fulfilled it ex post facto.
And this is for a week, therefore hear from Hakham Ezra Dangoor –
Please come with me to Dangoor Mas'ud Abu Bab al-Agha <del>⟦illegible⟧</del>
I request of his honor the Rabbi regarding Ka'abur, I request you tell him the news that
he should be present at the house of Hakham Sassoon on the night of the twenty-first
I finished the speech, he handed me a paper in which was written this content
that on the Sabbath day at the hour of 7:30 that Ka'abur visited him
I sent a letter to Hakham Saleh Mas'ud Menashe regarding Ka'abur and what –
this day behind a witness, I request of your honor to be present
at the house of Hakham Sassoon, and he was present and they said to him come
from the Tabu department by the hand of Muhammad al-Ali regarding the paper
he paid this matter, they know about it, you want to believe his words
that he handed him the paper as you wish and after they signed
on the paper he took the paper from him and went to his house
at that time Hakham Menashe and Ka'abur were present with us at the house
until the day Ka'abur tells and he went to his house

Chapters of Purification
Know that it is permissible for you to pray in all clean places
from impurity, and there should be no blood hidden in it, nor should the place be a church. And from
what resembles that, or human wine or alcohol above 14 dirhams; for if it was
less than a dirham, and the dirham is the weight of ⟦...⟧ dirhams, and the dirham is
16 carats, then if the impurity is less than that, it is excused
from it. And the place may be clean, yet despite that, prayer is not permissible in it,
such as that place being a path for people, or a place for trash, or a sewer,
or a bathhouse, or a camel resting place, or on top of the roof of the Forbidden House of God; for these
places, prayer is not permissible in all of them even if they were clean, and despite
that, if one prayed in them, his prayer is valid, but despite that he sins for doing so,
except that prayer on top of the roof of the Kaaba is void for the lack of facing
any part of it. And other than those places, prayer is permissible in them, whether
it was in the wilderness or in populated areas; and in mosques it is better, and the
Sacred Mosque is the best of mosques, then the Mosque of the Messenger (PBUH), then the
Al-Aqsa Mosque, then the congregational mosques, then the local mosques. And it has been reported that prayer in
a group is better than the prayer of an individual by twenty-seven degrees. And the prayer
of a man with a woman in one row is valid if there is a barrier between them,
or if the woman was behind the man. And despite that, if she stood beside him
in a shared prayer, the man's prayer is void but not the woman's; and if she
had followed his lead, both of their prayers are void; and if she did not follow
his lead nor was she sharing the prayer with him, the prayer of neither
of them is void. And it is recommended for the traveler to call the Adhan and the Iqamah for every prayer.

And how we arrived, and it was on Friday ⟦...⟧ at four o'clock
And from ⟦...⟧ apple and our exit was in fear and terror
And that date was 16 Adar in the year 5709 and before we entered
the airport, there were many Arabs present and among
the group of Arabs who were searching through all the belongings, there was
one Arab man with a thick stick in his hand hitting people left and right
recognizing neither old nor young, and the poor people were crying from the intensity of
the beating and from the fear of the Arabs who were searching the belongings
And they would take all the gold, silver, copper, and it's a loss
that the Arabs were taking all the new and expensive
clothes and they would not leave anything for the poor people except the clothes
that were on them, and before we entered the airport there was a wall
built and in the middle of it a small door through which one enters

It is stated in the Talmud, Tractate Shabbat, that whoever says "Behold it is upon us for the entire year"
it is as if he vowed because he did not divide the whole year ⟦like the vows of the upright⟧ even on Yom Kippur
And in the Book of Customs from the Maharam, of blessed memory, he wrote: "For the entire year," behold this
is not a vow. But if he said "the entire year except for Yom Kippur," behold this is
like the vows of the upright, that he vowed for the entire year except for Yom Kippur. And if
he said <del>for the year</del> except for Yom Kippur or from Yom Kippur for a year, behold this is
like a vow. This one said "the Lord," it is not like a vow but like their words ⟦...⟧ that he vowed is not like a vow
And in the book Ohel Yosef ⟦...⟧ - like a vow or not like a vow. And if it was not said
And even if he said a vow for a year ⟦...⟧ it implies that it is not a vow, not a vow
And if he said for a specific time, such as from Rosh Hashanah until Yom Kippur
And even if he does not say "a vow" but says "behold it is upon us as a vow" but if
he was saying a vow like the vows of the upright, behold this is a complete vow even on Shabbat
And Yom Tov. Shabbat was not forbidden on Yom Tov, such as Shabbat
Therefore, when a person heard "like the vows of the upright," behold this implies a vow
upon himself that it should be like a vow ⟦...⟧ for the custom of the vow is like the vows of the upright
And if he vowed according to the custom of the vow
And he vowed a vow to the Lord your God ⟦...⟧ your God, when you vow a vow to the Lord your God
from everything that he vowed that it should be like a vow. And if he did not vow like the vows of the upright
as it is written in the vows of the upright, behold this vow implies a vow
