Date: 21 Adar 1937. We received a letter from the son Ezra Yeru
from Baghdad, bringing us news of the health and safety of everyone. And it was
at the beginning of the letter, he says that a letter from us reached them
and the letter was dated 25 Shevat, and in it was the news of the death of the late
Yaakov at the beginning of the month of Shevat, and they grieved for that greatly and wept for him
and prayed for mercy for him, may God's mercy and favor be upon him. And after that, he says that
the shops and houses of the Jews that had been closed since the time
of the events have been opened, and the people have returned to their work,
and that the government is fulfilling its duty in maintaining comfort and security.
And the price of wheat had dropped to 200 fils per weight unit after
it had been 350 fils, and the price of barley is 150 fils per weight unit,
and this is very cheap compared to its price in the past year.
Likewise, the oil and all other foodstuffs are all very cheap.
And regarding Meir's shop, he says that the market is very stagnant and they
do not sell anything at all, to the point he says that Meir opens the shop
from morning until evening and does not even have an opening sale.
And the expenses are ongoing for them, from the shop rent to food and drink,
and they do not know how they will manage their living affairs; may God be in their help.
And he says that Ezra Daniel and Shaul Daniel traveled to Iran
because of naturalization, because the government demanded their deportation
because they do not have Iraqi nationality, and they traveled by way of
Khanaqin, and with them a large group of Jews who were not
naturalized, and they suffered greatly on the way from the cold
and the rain and from the car drivers because they took from them
a high fare and humiliated them with a very great humiliation.
And the rest, until the day of 25 Adar, we will write to you, God willing,
if there remains any part of life. Peace.
To Isaac, addressed to Yeru

And Al-Asfar calculated the completion of the time of the afternoon, like this, as it was finished at our place in the house
And he said to him, how do you have two thousand rabbis? He said to him, studied, how can it be?
Now at night he told them, he said to him, I want you to come with me like this
And we will tell the news. He said to him, O my master, I do not want anything from you but good.
He said to him, if she is with me and with my brother, it will not be good.
And every day I come to you because I have great and much work with you and it shall not be.
He said to him, finish the work with the one whose soul and the other, pay him a quarter of an hour.
Until when were you in the house and you went out walking or such and returned to him, how can it be?
I said to him, O my master, gold, and God knows until when it will be because it will be good.
And he does not want <del>⟦illegible⟧</del> except that it be good, God willing, and he also told me
⟦...⟧ he told me thus, and I finished with him. He said to me, O my master, do not fear
So-and-so, and after the day the year turns for me it will be good, and he sat weeping and saying
If you want to go and like an infidel <del>⟦illegible⟧</del> <del>⟦illegible⟧</del> with him
And you must come with me to the house <del>⟦illegible⟧</del> and with me you come to the house
O my master, I do not want you to act like the Sheikhs, and how you come with me to the house
And we went out from the house at 5 o'clock at night and went to the house of so-and-so
At night and we sat there for an hour and he said to him, come O so-and-so
And I do not know what he was saying to him in the house of seclusion while I was sitting
And he sat weeping and saying to him, O my master, I do not want anything from you except
<del>⟦illegible⟧</del> O my master, do not fear anything except God Almighty and He will be
And with you in everything you want from me, and I am your servant and the son of your maidservant
For I cannot break your word, O my master, as long as there is a soul
And I am your servant in everything you command me with, I am present
⟦...⟧ we went out from his presence and went to the house and sat talking
In the house of seclusion for an hour, and he was saying to me thus and thus
And by God, O my master, I cannot say anything to you except
Good and happiness, thus it shall be

A story of a king's son who denied
And he said to him, O son, do not go etc., for you are not a great king and honor is not crown
to him, and a king is forbidden by the Torah that he should not multiply for himself wives, and silver and gold he shall not multiply for himself
And so he went and took for himself a wife, the daughter of a king, and gave her a great dowry and made a feast
up to seven days; and it was on the eighth day, he said to his servants, Bring to me
my wife; and they brought her before him, and she was of beautiful form and very beautiful appearance
and he saw her and she found favor in his eyes, and he rejoiced in her with great joy
And he dwelt with her many days, and she conceived and bore a son, and he called his name Solomon
And the child grew and was weaned, and the king made a great feast on the day of the weaning of
his son Isaac; and the king rejoiced with great joy and loved his son with a strong
love; and the child grew, and it was when the king was old, he called his son and said to him
My son, behold now I am old, I know not the day of my death; and now, please take your gear
your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me, and make me tasty dishes
such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat, so that my soul may bless you before
I die; and the son went and did so, and brought the game and made tasty dishes
and brought to his father and said, My father; and he said, Here I am, who are you, my son? And he said
I am your son, your firstborn Esau; and Isaac said, The voice is the voice of Jacob, and the hands
are the hands of Esau; and he blessed him and said, See, the scent of my son is like the scent of a field which
the Lord has blessed; and may God give you of the dew of heaven and of the fatness of the earth, and plenty
of grain and wine; let peoples serve you and nations bow down to you; be a lord
over your brothers, and may your mother's sons bow down to you; cursed be those who curse you, and blessed be those who bless you
And it was as soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and it was that Jacob had barely gone out
from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came from his hunting; and he also made
tasty dishes and brought to his father, and said to his father, Let my father arise
and eat of his son's game, so that your soul may bless me; and Isaac his father
said to him, Who are you? And he said, I am your son, your firstborn Esau; and Isaac trembled
with an exceedingly great trembling, and said, Who then was he who hunted game
and brought to me, and I ate of all before you came, and I blessed him? Indeed, he shall be blessed
With the help of the Blessed Name I will begin to write a book of stories
Here in Baghdad ⟦...⟧ the year 5620 of the creation of the world
May He help me for the sake of His name's glory and protect me and all Israel
Amen, so may it be His will, and we shall begin to write stories
For I know that you do not believe in the words of the Sages of blessed memory
And because of this I wrote to you in the Arabic language so that everyone will understand
In order that they may know the reward of the righteous and the punishment of the wicked, and this is the beginning
A story of a man who was very wealthy and had one son
And this wealthy man was old, well along in years, and had much money
Very much so, and when the day of his death arrived he called his only son and said to him
My son, know that I am going the way of all the earth and I command you
What you shall do after my death, and it is that this money which
I leave to you, do not trade with it on land but rather at sea
And this shall be the sign for you: when you hear that I am dead, go and sell
Everything that is in the house and buy merchandise and go to the overseas province
And the son wept for his father, and his father died and he buried him with great honor
And he did as his father commanded him and sold all that he had and bought merchandise
And he boarded a ship to go to the overseas province, and it happened while they were in the heart of the sea
A stormy wind rose up against them and broke the ship, and everything in it
Drowned in the sea, and this young man remained naked and held onto a plank
And floated on the surface of the water, and a wave came and threw him onto the dry land
And he stayed there naked and wept a great weeping for what he had lost
And it happened one day while he was sitting on the seashore, behold a ship was passing by
And he cried out to them and they approached him and saw him naked and had mercy on him
And they clothed him and took him with them and brought him to their country
And it happened when they arrived at the country, all the people of the country went out
To meet them with joy and with songs, and they saw this man
And they took him and set him upon a horse and dressed him in royal garments
And they made him king over them, and the young man rejoiced with great joy
And said in his heart, what is this great honor that they have done for me
For he did not know the custom of that country, and it happened one day while he was sitting
Upon his royal throne, one of the ministers who were before him
Approached him and said to him: my lord the king, know that the custom of this country
Is that every single year they crown one king over them
And at the end of the year they take him and strip him of the royal garments
And send him to an island where there is neither bread nor water
And he dies there of hunger and thirst; and now, see what you will do

He who used to name God Almighty by His Great, Holy Name
And He is the King of Kings, Glory be to Him and Exalted
And even if His mention in the Holy Torah is the mention of God Almighty
Who created the heavens and the earth and all that is in them in six days
And He rested on the seventh day, which is the Holy Sabbath day
Which God Almighty commanded us to keep and respect
And to worship Him and prostrate to Him at all times and moments because He is the Creator
Who created us, provided for us, and gave us life, breath, and spirit
And the body, the mind, the understanding, the science, the knowledge, and the religion
The clear one, which is the religion of truth, faith, and submission
And piety, righteousness, and success in this world and the hereafter
And even if His mention is in the Holy Books which He sent down
God Almighty upon His sent prophets who were
Calling people to the worship of God Almighty and the strengthening
Of His religion and faith in Him and in His Holy Books
Which are the Torah, the Psalms, the Gospel, and the Quran
Which is the word of God Almighty which He sent down upon
His prophet ⟦Muhammad⟧, peace and blessings of God be upon him, and in His Book
The Mighty, which falsehood does not approach from before it
Nor from behind it, a revelation from the Wise, the Praiseworthy
And even if His mention is in the books authored by the scholars
The wise men, the virtuous, and the literati in every time
And every era, in every language, and in every tongue, in every
Country, in every village, and in every place in the East
And the West, in the North, and in the South, in the land
And the sea, in the heaven, and in the earth, in Paradise
And the Fire, in this world, and in the hereafter, in everything

And after that, the word of God will be with them, and He will have mercy on all after their death and will make
the like of it. A report was mentioned regarding that on the authority of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, that he
said: Whoever has a child die and is patient over it, God will admit him into Paradise without reckoning
and without punishment. A woman said: O Messenger of God, and two? He said: And two.
And he also said: Whoever buries three of his children and is patient over them, Paradise is guaranteed
for him. A woman said: O Messenger of God, and two? He said: And two.
And he also said: Whoever has a child die and seeks refuge and is patient and is pleased with the decree
of God the Exalted, a house will be built for him in Paradise called the House of Praise.
And Ibrahim, the son of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him,
had died while he was small, so the Messenger of God grieved over him
intensely. Some of the companions said to him: O Messenger
of God, have you not forbidden us from weeping? So he said to them:
Verily, the eye sheds tears and the heart grieves, and we do not say what displeases
the Lord, and we are indeed grieved by your parting, O Ibrahim.
Then he, peace and blessings be upon him, wiped his tears
and said: Verily, weeping inherits mercy and screaming inherits
vengeance; so whoever shows mercy will be shown mercy, and whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy.

If you enter the vault
the lion will be sitting in the center of it, so do not fear and approach him and say
to him: Peace be upon you, O Lord of the Animals ⟦line⟧
And he will return the greeting of peace to you and say to you: Welcome, O my son
Sit down. So you shall sit before him politely, and when the table is set
eat, you and he together, and when you have finished eating and they have cleared the table
take the cup and drink first yourself, and take the second cup
and fill it and give it to him with your right hand and say to him: O Master, drink
healthily and pleasantly. Then he will take the cup from your hand and drink it, then he will sleep
immediately and snore in his sleep. So when you see that he has fallen asleep
take the knife and slaughter him, having prepared a strong fire for him, and skin him
and roast him and eat of him, you and whoever is with you, and break his bones and eat the marrow
that is in them. And when you have eaten his flesh and his marrow and drunk his blood
you will become like the lion; you will not fear anything and no one will terrify you
and you will be respected by kings and sultans
and everyone who sees you will fear you and fulfill your needs.
Finished.

David said, O my Lord, O Lord God the Merciful, Creator of the heavens and the earth, nothing is with the Merciful
Nothing of the hidden things of the earth is hidden from me, nor is anything of the hidden things of heaven hidden from me
And we are Your servants, O Merciful One, like the dust of the earth and orphans to whom You give a spirit of life from You. And he said
You know, O Lord, David Your servant, and I have been an orphan from my mother's womb and from my youth, O Lord
O Lord of the worlds, I cried out like Caleb son of Jephunneh, Your servant Moses, his brother likewise says
Because You are the one who was with him, and from You comes the seeker of all these words, he says
And I am David Your servant, and every creature, what can I stand before You, O Lord, while You see this
And how could this be what it is
And David used to return words to the creatures, saying to them, O people
What you see before you of small parts increases fear, and from long ago it was not so
And David was speaking with them and they were hearing the words, and from the flow of tears falling from
The eye of David, it falls to the ground like rain, these words said David signs he hears
From creatures, and he said to them, O people, hear my words, what will be
This woman and her hearing from David she could not hear it, and You, O Lord of the worlds
You say regarding David that this matter shall be... yes, O people, may God have mercy on the dead
Words
These words are the words of David, peace be upon him, with God Almighty
And David used to say, O Lord of the worlds, You know what is in the hearts
And You know who is truthful and who is a liar, You know the words
Of people, whether they be truthful or whether they be liars, O Lord, You know
Who is pure of heart and who is not a liar with God Almighty
And David said to Him, O Lord of the worlds, why do You not have mercy on Your servants, O Lord
O Lord of the worlds, You are the Creator of all and You provide for all, O Lord
For all thus are Your words, O Lord, words of truth, and Your law is a law of truth, O Lord
And David said, O Lord of the worlds, who can stand before You, O Lord
And what is man before You, if he raises his hand, it is the words of the worlds
For this, O Lord, we ask of You mercy, and do not cut off Your mercy from
Your servant, the aggrieved David, O Lord, You know the state, O Lord, see the state of Your servant David
And forgive me, O Lord, all my sins

A word in its season, etc.
This letter is a response to the letter that you sent to us, and it reached
our hand; and it arrived on Friday, the night of the Sabbath, the date of the day of
Adar, the year ⟦660⟧, and we read it and understood what is in it from beginning to end. And it is certain that
the teacher Moshe Hai, may his glory be exalted, had traveled to Al-Hayy, and regarding that, a letter arrived
from our son David, may his Rock and Redeemer preserve him, mentioning that he arrived at Al-Hayy safe and sound, and we were
extremely happy about that; may God return him to his place for life and for peace, Amen. And regarding what you mentioned,
that a letter reached us from our son David, may his Rock and Redeemer preserve him, informing us of the arrival of a legal document (patent)
for the payment of money; I say that at the time our son Moshe Hai, may his Rock and Redeemer preserve him, traveled,
we had no knowledge of that. And it is not hidden from you that the times are difficult and the road
is dangerous, and we were troubled in mind regarding our son David, may his Rock and Redeemer preserve him,
until a letter reached us from him informing us of his safe arrival, so we thanked God Exalted
for that. And regarding the legal document (patent) that you mentioned, nothing of it has reached us,
and we know nothing about it at all. Had anything of it reached us, we would have informed you
of it and would not have hidden anything from you. And regarding what you mentioned that we should write to him about that, we
will, God willing, write to him and inform him of that, and we will see what his reply to us will be,
and we will inform you of the truth. As for what you mentioned regarding the merchandise that
you had sent accompanied by our son David, may his Rock and Redeemer preserve him, we have understood that. We had
also sent with him a small amount of merchandise, and a
letter reached us from him informing us that he sold everything with a small profit, and he mentioned that the market
is very sluggish and the profit is small. We have written to him to buy with the money
merchandise and send it to us, and that no money should remain with him,
so that he faces no danger on the road, because the road is dangerous
as we mentioned to you. A response has reached us from him informing us that he complied
with our order and bought merchandise and sent it to us, and the merchandise arrived
safely, praise be to God. And you, O my brother, it is not hidden from you that our son David, may his Rock and Redeemer preserve him,
is a complete and wise man, and he knows how to conduct affairs in the best manner,
and there is no need for us to instruct him on that. He knows that your property and our property
are one, and nothing separates us from others, and he manages your property
just as he manages our property, exactly the same, and he will not fall short in any of that.
And this is what was necessary to inform you. Peace.

Sidi Aziz bin Khalifa, may his memory be a blessing, told me that as I mentioned that speech to him,
it descended from him like rain falling from the sky; so it used to descend from his mouth.
Indeed, what is found with God is more than what is found among people, beyond counting,
like the status of the sea which supplies all the rivers and wells,
and nothing is diminished from it,
except if the servant is righteous and upright in path with God, may He be exalted, He provides.
And likewise, God loves to provide for everyone who seeks from Him without fatigue or hardship,
provided that his heart is pure and his intention is sincere.
By the hand of Al-Mansur Al-Maghribi, may God have mercy on him.

On mentioning the science of the names.
Also on condition that he does not have more than two wives; for if he has three,
and the first appears, the first dies, and the second dies with the second. If he has four women,
two would die with two as we mentioned to them, one dies and two die
with the second. If he has five wives, three of them die and two remain. And if he

women remain and six die. And if he has eleven women, six of them die
and five women remain for him. And likewise, twelve women, six of them die and six

And likewise, fourteen women, seven of them die and seven remain. And likewise, fifteen

With God's help, this time which is not free from trouble and stress except when it is essential
surely in four things it shall be pure. The first is that he is always joyful and happy
and thus the joy that comes from trouble in the past shall not be, and there
shall not be fear and panic happening to him from the future. These three are never absent
at any time. As for the fourth, it is that he knows
everything.
After days and weeks, God will return His words with rebukes and ethical instruction.
Generally, we understand that this world is an evil house and there is no rest within it for them ⟦...⟧
for it is full of sorrow, pain, and mourning. You will not find in it a matter that does not contain
grief or pain. Sometimes he suffers over children, or over a wife, or over money, and how shall he not
suffer in a house where his mother died and there is weeping and wailing, and how shall he not suffer
when it is full of wicked people, arrogant ones, thieves, violence, and those lacking faith? And in it
dwells the snake, the fiery serpent, the scorpion, and wild beasts. And where shall rest be found?
It will not be found on any side, and especially among human beings, who are "a man's enemies are the men of
his own house," as the pious one explained in Duties of the Heart, Gate of Unity, Chapter 6.
A parable: To what is the matter comparable? To a merchant who had much wealth and (much) silver.
⟦...⟧ the weight of the silver from the pouch to buy the merchandise, and upon seeing
the abundance of silver inside the pouch, he rejoiced in his heart with great joy
and thought in his heart.
Despite all this, my dear daughter, know and see and incline your ear and forget your people and your father's house,
which is this world, for it is full of suffering and there is no rest in it. However, the rest
is in a place where there is no grief or sighing, and there the weary of strength shall rest, and there
the prisoners rest together, and the small and the great are there. That is the world of souls which all
admit is very good and eternal life ⟦...⟧
A certain man named Yitzhak son of Avraham Elazar Yitzhak Mutzari
possessed a book of Psalms and a prayer book for the whole year.
And he would sit and pray and read from the two aforementioned books every single day -
When he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath and on festivals, he would carry
these two books in his hand - and he would read from them until the end of the prayer
and he would leave them in the synagogue and go to his home -
One time he forgot them in the synagogue and did not remember them until the Sabbath day -
He came to the synagogue and did not find them, and he suffered great grief over them.
After some days, a man came to him and said to him: I saw two books
in the house of so-and-so, and they are similar to your books - The aforementioned Yitzhak went to
that certain person and found them with him - He said to him: These books are mine
and I lost them in the synagogue - That certain person said to him:
I bought them from the market - The aforementioned Yitzhak said to him: For how much
did you buy them? - He said to him: For eighteen grush - Yitzhak said to him,
the aforementioned: Take eighteen grush and give me my books - He said to him,
that certain person: I will not give them to you unless you give me
twenty grush - The aforementioned Yitzhak said to him: Why do you want
two grush more from me? - That certain person said to him: Because of
my effort in going to the market and buying them - Yitzhak said to him,
the aforementioned: I will not give you more than eighteen grush -
And that certain person did not want to give him the books - The aforementioned
Yitzhak went to the Sage and told him the story - The Sage sent
for that certain person and he came to him - The Sage said to him:
Why do you not want to give Yitzhak his books? -

// And after he knew that this woman
reached her end and died in her husband's house, and she had from him
two daughters. She had a jewelry set, a face set, bedding, and cloth.
And all of that remained except for the cloth, for it was destroyed as mentioned in
the register. And since she had two daughters who reached maturity, and when
the aforementioned husband, who is the father of the two aforementioned daughters, died, he left male heirs
from another woman and heirs besides them. So the two daughters rose to demand the inheritance
of their mother from their father's estate. Their brothers said to them that your father
had consumed all that your mother inherited from her father and from
others, and from her dowry, and she had nothing left in his possession, and
what he left is his property alone and no one else's. But they did not believe them in that
and they brought their matter to the judge of the noble Sharia and mentioned that to him.
So he summoned the heirs of the aforementioned deceased and asked them about that. They answered similarly
to what they mentioned to the two daughters. So he requested evidence from them for that. So they brought
to the council of the noble Sharia two upright men who testified before the judge
of the Sharia that the aforementioned deceased, father of the two aforementioned daughters, had consumed
all that his wife, the mother of the two aforementioned daughters, inherited from her father
and from others, and all of her dowry during her life, and she died while she
was satisfied with him and was not demanding anything from him. They also testified
that all that the aforementioned deceased left is his property alone and no one else's.
So the aforementioned judge ruled according to the content of their testimony and bound
the two daughters to cease. And they are now demanding something from their father's estate
claiming that they have a right to that. So is that permissible for them according to Sharia
or not? Give us a legal opinion, and may you be rewarded.
The Answer
The aforementioned ruling is correct; it is not permissible for them to overturn it or to appeal it
in any way whatsoever. And this was written by the servant of God, exalted be He,
Moshe son of the honorable Master Sasson Ha-Levi.

Exalted, and these surahs are these: O God, O He who is God, besides whom there is no god but He,
the Living, the Sustainer, whom neither slumber nor sleep overtakes. O He who is God, besides whom there is no god but He,
the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, the Compassionate, the Merciful. O He who is God, besides whom there is no god but He,
the King, the Holy, the Peace, the Giver of Faith, the Guardian, the Mighty, the Compeller, the Proud; glory be to God
above what they associate [with Him]. He is God, the Creator, the Producer, the Fashioner; to Him belong the most beautiful names; whatever
is in the heavens and the earth glorifies Him, and He is the Mighty, the Wise. O He who is God, besides whom there is no god but He,
the One, the Unique, the Single, the Eternal Refuge, who neither begets nor was begotten, and there is none co-equal to Him.
O God, O Living, O Sustainer, O Lord of Majesty and Honor, O He who is God, besides whom there is no
god but He, the High, the Great, for whom no 'how' is known, nor 'where', nor 'whither',
nor 'how' He is except Him. O He who is God, besides whom there is no god but He, whom
the senses do not perceive, and the eyes do not reach, but He reaches the eyes, and He is the Subtle,
the Great. O He who is God, besides whom there is no god but He, for whom no measure is known,
no limit is defined for Him, nor is He confined in a place, nor is any place devoid of Him. He is God,
besides whom there is no god but He, for whom no namesake is known, nor likeness, nor peer,
nor partner in His kingdom, nor helper in His handiwork, nor consultant in His governance,
nor minister in His authority, nor assistant in His power. O He who is God, besides whom
there is no god but He, for whom no female companion is known, nor a son.

And he did evil in the sight of the Lord; he did not depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made
Israel to sin. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and He delivered them into the hand of Hazael king of Aram, and into the hand
of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael, all those days. And Jehoahaz besought the Lord, and the Lord hearkened unto him;
for He saw the oppression of Israel, how the king of Aram oppressed them. And the Lord gave Israel
a savior, so that they went out from under the hand of Aram; and the children of Israel dwelt in their tents, as in times
past. Nevertheless they departed not from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, who made Israel sin, but walked
therein; and there remained the Asherah also in Samaria. For he left to Jehoahaz of the people but fifty
horsemen, and ten chariots, and ten thousand footmen; for the king of Aram destroyed them, and made them like the dust
in threshing. Now the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz, and all that he did, and his might, are they not written in the book
of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? And Jehoahaz slept with his fathers; and they buried him in Samaria;
and Joash his son reigned in his stead. In the thirty and seventh year of Joash king of Judah began
Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz to reign over Israel in Samaria, and reigned sixteen years. And he did evil
in the sight of the Lord; he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel sin; but he walked
therein. Now the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did, and his might wherewith he fought against Amaziah
king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? And Joash slept
with his fathers; and Jeroboam sat upon his throne; and Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings
of Israel. Now Elisha was fallen sick of his sickness whereof he was to die; and Joash the king of Israel came down unto him,
and wept over his face, and said: 'My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and the horsemen thereof!' And Elisha said unto him: 'Take
bow and arrows'; and he took unto him bow and arrows. And he said to the king of Israel: 'Put thy hand upon the bow';
and he put his hand upon it. And Elisha laid his hands upon the king's hands. And he said: 'Open the window eastward'; and he opened it.
Then Elisha said: 'Shoot'; and he shot. And he said: 'The Lord's arrow of victory, even the arrow of victory against Aram; for thou shalt smite
the Arameans in Aphek, till thou have consumed them.' And he said: 'Take the arrows'; and he took them. And he said unto the king of Israel:
'Smite upon the ground'; and he smote thrice, and stayed. And the man of God was wroth with him, and said:
'Thou shouldest have smitten five or six times; then hadst thou smitten Aram till thou hadst consumed it; whereas now three
times thou shalt smite Aram.'
And Elisha died, and they buried him. Now the bands of the Moabites used to invade the land at the coming in of the year. And it came to pass, as they were burying
a man, that, behold, they spied a band; and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha; and as soon as the man
touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet. And Hazael king of Aram oppressed

Sermon for Purim
And the King said to Queen Esther, etc. What is your petition, and it shall be granted you? and what is your request? even to
half of the kingdom, and it shall be performed, etc. On this verse, the commentators, of blessed memory, raised a difficulty
for King Solomon, peace be upon him, said by the Holy Spirit: "The king's heart is like channels of water in the hand of the Lord; wherever
He wishes, He turns it." The explanation of the verse is thus: that the Holy One, Blessed be He, created the world and conducts it
according to His will, may He be blessed, and no obstacle in the world shall prevent Him. And even the kings,
who have the dominion and the power in their hands to do whatever their heart desires—despite all this,
their heart and their will are in the hand of the Lord, may He be blessed, and He inclines their heart toward whatever He desires.
And behold, it is known that nothing in the world happens by chance, rather everything is by providence
from the Lord, may He be blessed. And even when a person sees some trouble coming upon him, he should not attribute the matter
to chance, God forbid, but should believe with perfect faith that this was from the Lord as a result
of his sins. And as the verse says: "If you walk with Me in happenstance (Keri), then I will walk with you in the fury of
happenstance." The meaning is: if you say regarding the troubles coming upon you that they are by way of chance, then
I too will deliver you into the hand of chance and I will remove My providence from you. And behold,
it is known and famous how great the miracle was that was performed in the days of Mordecai and Esther, when
Haman the wicked sought to destroy, to kill, and to annihilate all the Jews, from young to old,
infants and women, in one day, and to plunder their goods. And the Holy One, Blessed be He, frustrated his counsel and spoiled his plan,
and returned his recompense upon his own head, and they hanged him and his sons on the tree which he had prepared for Mordecai.
And it was turned about, so that the Jews themselves had rule over those who hated them. And all of this was
a cause from the Lord, may He be blessed, in order to publicize His divinity in the world, and so that all should know that there is
a God who judges on the earth and watches over those below, and in His hand is the soul of every living thing.
And a king is not saved by the multitude of a host, and the king cannot do a small thing or a large thing
without the permission of the Creator, may He be blessed. And this is what the verse meant: "The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord," etc.
Therefore, when Queen Esther, peace be upon her, saw that evil was determined against her by Haman
the wicked, may his name be blotted out, she risked her life for her people and her kindred and entered before King
Ahasuerus to beseech him for her people. And behold, King Ahasuerus hated
Israel more than Haman the wicked, but he was afraid to do them harm because of
the Holy One, Blessed be He, for he had already seen what happened to Nebuchadnezzar and Belshazzar. And therefore, when
Haman the wicked came and asked him to write the letters to destroy the Jews,
the King said to him: "I am afraid of their God, lest He do to me as He did
to my predecessors." Haman the wicked answered him: "Their God is asleep and does not watch over them."
In the order of the perfection of <del>the Torah</del> witnessing concerning a religion for a people -
That glory, may God - exalted be He - grant victory and establish it in its place -
All that truth is proof of sincerity; it occurred for them on the third day of
that glory, we see the proof of sincerity is firm and the evidence is clear among
the seven nations. And that is among the proofs of sincerity cast into the minds of people.
And if religion were one for everyone, it would be correct, just as the truth
is one. Among the proofs of sincerity is that the word of God, exalted be He, be known
to be truthful; for it is the proof of sincerity, known by the evidence of reason and tradition
in the path of truth. First, that the prophet who calls to that be truthful in
the beginning of the matter. If the prophet is truthful, his word is correct and accepted.
If the seeker of truth is sincere, and if the prophet perceives the sincerity, it becomes
as if he has a motive, and the proof of sincerity in the heart of the prophet makes sincerity
born to him; and in the holy abode of perfection, he ate and drank from His hands
as if he sees God, exalted be He, and his word becomes the word of God, exalted be He, known
to be truthful in all that. The proof of sincerity would be clear and evident,
being a proof of the truthfulness of his claim even if it were without the evidence of reason.
Doubt would not befall him; rather, it would be the word of God, exalted be He, if he is truthful.
If the prophet called to that without proof, the prophet would be a liar,
and a liar cannot be a prophet, nor would the word of God, exalted be He, be known to him.
That would be without the evidence of reason and tradition; the word of the prophet would be
the word of God, exalted be He, known.

And I also remember the rest of the services for the Talmud in which we always labored –
and it was our danger and our opinion until all that became a reason because the owners
of this Talmud, upon their departure from Baghdad to our side, received news
from the side of Ibn Mu'allim that our money went into it otherwise
and that we did not deserve anything from him, and I do not know how the situation was
until we arrived here, and after we reached them, a letter reached them from Baghdad
and my master father Isaac Al-Masri, may he find mercy, saw it and looked over what
was in that letter, and among what was written in it was that they should know that we
emphasized our presence with them, and all that we ate and drank from them is
forbidden to us <del>and other things</del> and that we are thieves and burglars and other things from what
is shameful to mention. So when my master father Isaac the Priest heard that, he was pained
and his soul felt very small and he said to me: O my son, what is this news that we hear
behind you <del>⟦illegible⟧</del>? So I said to him: O my master, you know the truth and you know
that we did not steal and were not thieves, rather the one who attributes to us
this speech is an oppressor and aggressor against us. So he said to me: You are right,
but o my son, from now on you must not eat from
our food at all, nor drink anything, until the situation is clarified. So I stayed,
and my brother Joseph, buying our food and drink from our own money, and we did not
eat their provisions nor drink their water, and we remained patient through that
for a period of about a full year, until another letter reached them from
Baghdad informing them that the news that reached them was a lie
and that the man is innocent of all that, and that enemies merely transgressed against him and wrote against him
thus, and they believed their words. So when they saw that, their souls were appeased,
and my master father Isaac the Priest recited saying: Praise be to God who made manifest
the truth and justified the righteous and invalidated the words of the liars. And we returned to what
we were doing regarding eating and drinking with them as usual.

With God's help
And the holiness of our mistress Leah and Mrs. Esther daughter of Mr. Salha, may her soul be bound in the bundle of life
All the days of their lives from anger and pain, and may no illness rest upon them
And may it be Your will that You bless Mordechai Your servant for the commandment: Do not
multiply in your house, and the wages of a laborer shall not remain with you until morning, and do not oppress
your fellow, and do not rob. And may He give to Mordechai Your servant long life and all
that he does shall prosper, and no iniquity shall befall him. Both in his sitting
in his house and in his walking on the way, so that they shall not be ashamed and shall not be disgraced
and shall not stumble forever and ever; may kindness and truth preserve him; and the rest of
the members of his household may God bless with a complete blessing and may they merit to behold the pleasantness
of the Lord and to visit His temple, Amen. So may it be His will and let us say
Amen.
To Joseph, the son of mercy, who bound himself because of the subduing of his father (as it is written)
above, when they were going out on the way to buy grain in their straits, Reuben heard
the voice of a young boy who was crying on a rock; he heard that he was
saying: Woe to the seedling that does not see the face of its master.
The first fruit of a tree, for when he heard the sound of that young boy's crying, he trembled and was shaken
on his standing place and said: Surely this voice that I hear is from the holy
seed who cries over the separation from his father. What did he do? He ran after him,
found him sitting under a rock, and when he saw him, he cried and said:
My son, why do you do this to yourself? He said to him: How shall I not cry when all
the people of the world rest in their beds and I lie on the ground?
Every person has a father and a mother, and I have
neither father nor mother.
