Subject / English language books in intermediate schools
⟦line⟧
In view of the differences existing between the editions of the English language books, the Directorate of General
Technical Affairs has informed us that the English language teacher for the second grade can guide his students that eight
topics from the second-grade book are found in the old edition of the first intermediate grade book, which are:
1 Road Safety Page 100
2 - Abdul Qasim El Tamburi and his shoes page 109
3 - Some useful Trees and plants page 121
4 - Short and Easy Conversations page 131
5 - Old and New on the Land Page 141
6 - An English Home p 152
7 - The sheepskin Coat page 163
8 - Words with several meanings p 173
As for the rest of the topics in the new edition of the second-grade book, numbering five, they are found in the old
edition of the same book, which are -
1- The wise judge page 1
2- A wireless set page 17
3- Elizabeth Fry page 38
4 Two Letters page 50
5 Irrigation in Iraq page 62
Thus, the number of lessons in the English language book for the second intermediate grade is thirteen lessons only. Given
the distribution of copies of the previous editions of the two aforementioned books to schools, we believe the specialized
teacher should alert his students to these lessons to refer to them in the books in their possession from last year -
Please take the necessary action.

On receipt and administration

To /: Administrations of primary schools affiliated with this directorate, all
Subject /: English language instructions in primary schools
The Directorate of General Technical Affairs has informed us, according to the circular to schools affiliated with us, to teach the
English language book (Book One) in the entire fifth primary grade with its subjects amounting to (30) lessons, in addition
to the oral lessons numbering (24) lessons. And to teach all subjects of the English language book (Book
Two) in the sixth grade numbering (20) lessons without leaving any subject, considering that these lessons
form a series that completes one another. And that leaving some of these lessons will lead to a gap between
the sixth grade book lessons and the English language book for the first intermediate grade, noting that the share of the English
language during the actual attendance period of the year is equivalent to (120) classes on the basis of (180) days of actual
attendance. This means that the share of each lesson from the book is (6) classes, which is sufficient time to complete the book's lessons
entirely.
In order to achieve the purposes intended from teaching the English language, we hope that the male and female English language teachers
in primary schools observe the following recommendations in their teaching:
Mr. Munir

Mr. Dulaim
⟦signature⟧
1. English is a language of practice and application more than it is a language of grammar. Emphasizing the teaching of
grammar in it is not only a waste of time, but it hinders the development of skills of fluency, articulateness, and proficiency in the language.
Learning English is not achieved by merely contemplating and thinking about its rules and structure. Rather, it is achieved by practicing
and applying it. When we try to learn English, we face a task similar to the task we faced
when we learned our national language when we were children. We cannot today follow the same method by which we mastered
our national language. However, the general method does not change; we must listen to those who speak the language well and imitate them
accurately as much as possible. Grammar can quickly accelerate the learning method, but its only benefit
is limited to helping us in correct imitation. It is not an end in itself. As long as language is a set of
habits, the only way to learn it is to learn these habits, and we do not learn these habits by thinking
about them, but rather we learn them by practicing them. Instead of copying rules and wasting time on them, provide students
with opportunities to use different (Sentence patterns) to get used to following
their model.
English reading book lessons are not literary texts that need memorization, precise interpretation, and deep
investigation. Rather, they are experiences aimed at developing specific linguistic skills, attitudes, and habits that the student practices
as much as time allows. Full benefit in terms of reaching reading goals is best achieved by
diversifying and increasing reading materials, and not by summarizing them and concentrating effort on limited materials from them.
We hope that the teacher does not waste a long time or a full lesson in teaching materials that leave the student confused and dazed,
causing them to neglect the lesson and loathe it, such as some dedicating a full lesson to spelling or explaining the rules of the lesson in the
(Read & Learn) section.
2- We ask the teacher to refer to the recommendations contained in the English language curriculum prescribed for primary
education, as well as the book (Teacher's Notes To Book 1 and 2) to learn
about methods of teaching the subject in a way that helps the student to comprehend and master the lesson in the shortest time and with the least possible
effort.
3- Lesson Plan /
When developing the lesson plan, the following should be noted / -
A - Recording the lesson plan and distributing it over the weeks and months of the year, as is the custom for other subjects.
B - Indicating in the daily plan in the preparation notebook the number of the lesson intended to be taught, the page, and the exercises that
will be presented to the students.
C - Taking the (Teacher's Notes) book with the prescribed book into the classroom for assistance.
D - Preparing the lesson by reading it well, reading the points mentioned in the lesson plan, and preparing the necessary visual
aids before starting to teach the subject.
4- Presenting the Lesson / -
We recommend presenting the new lesson material orally to the students with the help of
(Teaching Aids) before opening the books and reading the text of the lesson, because teaching comes
before reading in the book. Noting that every lesson must include the following four sections / -

Continuation of the previous
3- Reading
4- Writing
Speaking
5- Use of the Arabic language /
The use and writing of Arabic sentences should be reduced as much as possible
in English language lessons, and the teacher may use the Arabic language in the following cases only / -
a- In the case of explaining some difficult points of the lesson or when explaining terminology in the book
b- In the case of the pupils' need to understand what they must do in solving exercises whose instructions they find difficult to understand
c- In the case of explaining the meaning of an English word that is difficult to clarify to the pupils except by translating its meaning into the
Arabic language ⟦line⟧
6- Book exercises: The exercises at the end of each lesson must have their answers provided by
the pupils after the teacher has finished teaching the material that each exercise revolves around. Also, it is
not advisable to attempt solving the exercises on the blackboard (as some male and female teachers do)
because by doing this they waste a long time that could be utilized in studying and mastering the lesson materials.
The purpose of writing exercises in notebooks is to accustom the pupils and train them in writing and in the correct
answering. Therefore, we recommend the teacher to follow the following / -
a- Solving the exercises in class orally in participation with the pupils, and if it is difficult for them to understand some sentences
from them, the teacher clarifies what needs to be clarified and writes the correct solution for it himself on the blackboard.
b- The pupils are asked at the end of the lesson to solve some exercises in the exercise book (if there is enough
time) or they are asked to do that as homework
c- The pupils are accustomed to writing the answers to the exercises only without the questions
d- It is the teacher's duty to read and correct everything the pupils write in their notebooks, whether it is handwriting, spelling,
or grammar, so that the pupils realize that everything they write passes under the teacher's eyes, and in case of any error in solving
the exercise, the pupils are made to rewrite the sentence in which they made a mistake correctly.
e- In the case of many similar errors occurring by the pupils during the answering, the teacher re-explains the model
of the sentence or the rule on which the exercise was based.
f- The teacher urges his pupils on the necessity of writing the solutions in clear, elegant handwriting, leaving a blank line between one line and another
for the teacher's correction. And that the solving of exercises be between one page and another so that it is possible to re-solve the incorrect exercise
on the blank page opposite the exercise after its correction.
7- Lesson material / We advise teachers not to force their pupils to write the text of the lesson (as some
do under the pretext that it strengthens their handwriting) because in this there is exhaustion for the pupils and a waste of time and effort, while
time and effort must be focused on the oral mastery of the lesson and not on writing it.
8- Pupils' handwriting / The pupils in the fifth primary grade learn to write English words
in print letters, and accordingly we recommend the teacher to write on the blackboard or in the pupils' notebooks (when correcting
them) in print letters, observing the usual spacing for letters and words.
And when the pupils start writing in the sixth grade, the teacher progresses with them to get used to writing in a
cursive manner, i.e., connecting the letters of the word with each other, and when the teacher writes on the blackboard or in their notebooks, he must connect
the letters of the words so that the pupils learn that gradually, provided that the teacher directs his pupils' attention to writing
the words correctly and in a clear, obvious manner in terms of shape, size, and form.
9- Dictation / In dictation lessons, it is preferred that the dictation material be easy and short, including
the new words they have learned. Knowing that the purpose of dictation is learning and not testing. And in the case of
dictating to the pupils, it is preferred that the teacher prepares for the pupils an opportunity to see or read the sentences and words that will be dictated
to them first, then he dictates them while pronouncing the words or phrases in a clear, loud voice without any exaggeration in
pronunciation or distortion in it. We also advise repeating the pronunciation of the word during the dictation twice or three times so that whoever could not
keep up with his brothers can do so. And the skilled teacher is the one who records in a small notebook the errors that are repeated among the pupils so that
he emphasizes correcting them and avoiding them for his students in the future. We also advise the teacher on the necessity of correcting the dictation with all
accuracy, and after correction, the teacher asks his pupils to write the words in which they made a mistake correctly three or four
times. And instead of the teacher correcting the mistakes, he evaluates the dictation with encouraging measures instead of grades, such as
(Excellent, thank you) and (Very good, Good, Fair, Average - I hope you improve, Weak - needs more
effort) etc. ⟦line⟧
10- Visual aids / We recommend using visual aids in every English language lesson
as a picture may be more useful and have a stronger impact than a word. Visual aids are likely to bring the concept of the lesson closer to the minds of
the pupils, attract and focus their attention, increase their interest in the lesson, and urge them to approach it with passion.

We also recommend that the teacher avoid decorating the classroom walls with pictures and charts that are used as means
of illustration. It is more correct to use them for a limited period of time until he begins teaching a new lesson
and then removes them.
We also recommend that the teacher keep these pictures in a large folder specialized for them, and thus he will have a
complete and organized set of book pictures kept in this folder according to the order and sequence of the book's lessons, and then it will be easy
for him to bring them at any time he wishes. We prefer that the teacher encourages his students to make these aids, especially
students who have special abilities in drawing and sketching. We hope that the male and female teachers of the English
language in primary schools will pay attention and apply the mentioned instructions.
