and our duty towards it
The esteemed Al-Iraq newspaper said in its issue No. 3600 issued on January 30
1932, we quote the following:
« In Baghdad, there is a charitable institution to house the blind, attend to their affairs, and teach them what they
need; and in this charitable work and carrying it out in the best way required by human duty
is a relief for the pain of those whom fate has afflicted with the most precious thing they have in life, and an easing
of this burden with which time has harmed and weighed them down. There is no doubt that the zealous
among the patriots take pleasure in performing the duty they owe to their fellow citizens, and indeed to humanity,
through this useful charitable institution »

Weddings, holidays, and private social parties at very low fees, and every request in this
regard is directed straight to the administration of the institution.
The committee is studying the issue of accepting blind female students, considering that there are a number of
these unfortunate women, and the hope is that in the near future it will be in a position to accept a number
of blind females.
Among the projects that the committee wishes to undertake soon is the establishment of a full brass band
Brass Band, and it hopes that such a project is guaranteed success given
the artistic competence demonstrated by the students.
What strengthens the committee's hope for continuous progress is its success in bringing a sighted teacher
specializing in teaching the blind, and this teacher has already begun his duties.
The committee is honored to submit its financial statement for the period between 1 / 4 / 1932
and 30 / 6 / 1935, and it wishes to express here that the committee's desire is directed towards investing the amount
available to the home by purchasing a suitable property that can provide the institution with a good annual income.

Committee's Statement
It gives the Committee of the Silas Kadoorie Blind Consolation Home great pleasure to announce to its male and female subscribers
that during the past year, it has overcome the greatest obstacle that stood in its way,
namely the obstacle of a permanent home. Thanks to the donation of the generous benefactor,
Sir Elly Kadoorie, the Committee for the Consolation of the Blind now has a sophisticated private building, built to the highest
standards and most luxurious construction, and furnished with all requirements. This building was inaugurated in a grand ceremony
held on June 9, 1935, honored by senior state officials, community leaders, and most of
the home's male and female subscribers.
In view of the narrowness of the previous building, it was not possible to accept a large number of students;
therefore, we limited the number of students at the Blind Consolation Home to no more than 42 students. The Committee hopes
that it will be able to accept another number soon.
As for the crafts of the blind, they are progressing. The weaving and repair of rattan chairs
has yielded satisfying results, and the Committee will introduce other crafts pertaining to the blind as soon as possible.
The Committee has imported from abroad the necessary tools for these crafts, along with recently published
reading books for the blind and a special chess set for the blind.
The blind music troupe has demonstrated superb skill and earned the satisfaction of its listeners, and was
the object of admiration for all who attended the inauguration ceremony of the home. The home's troupe is ready to play in

Then followed the virtuous Ibrahim Effendi Nahum, representative of Sir Eliezer Kadoorie, and he delivered a speech in which he mentioned
the formidable obstacles and many difficulties that the Sir overcame to complete his project in the most perfect form.
Music followed that by the blind ensemble, which delighted the ears of the attendees.
Then the lawyer, Mr. Anwar Effendi Shaul, honorary secretary of the house, stood and delivered a valuable and witty speech,
combining strength of meaning and beauty of expression, and it stirred various feelings in the souls of the listeners, from sympathy for the blind
wretches to a pressing desire to take them by the hand and save them from the abyss of misery and pain, and he enumerated the glorious deeds of Sir
Eliezer Kadoorie.
Then he was followed by one of the students of the house, who recited a poem that stirred the depths of the sorrows of those present because of its
wonderful description of the pains and suffering of the blind.
This was followed by beautiful music by the blind as well.
What also excited the admiration of the guests was that one of the students of the house sang a poem (Whenever your heart's satisfaction with me increases)
by Miss Umm Kulthum, which brought joy to hearts, followed by another who sang the poem (O my longing) by Abdel Wahab.
Finally, one of the students of the house delivered a speech of thanks on behalf of his brothers, followed by the march of His Majesty King
Ghazi the Great, which was composed by Mr. Anwar Shaul and set to music by Mr. Bahjat Effendi.
The ceremony was concluded by the virtuous Shamoun Effendi Moallem Nassim, with a religious prayer for the long life of the Great Master of the Country
and the great benefactor, and he prayed for mercy on his late father Silas Kadoorie.
After that, the attendees, led by Their Excellencies and Highnesses, stood and inspected the house adjacent
to the Laura Kadoorie School and toured its rooms decorated with flags and pictures of His Late Majesty King Faisal.

Inauguration Ceremony

Published on June 10, 1935
Yesterday morning, in the courtyard of the Laura Kadoorie School, the inauguration ceremony of the Blind Consolation Home took place.
(Silas Kadoorie) which was built and equipped with all its necessities by the generous Sir Eliezer Kadoorie.
The ceremony was honored by His Excellency Prime Minister Yassin Pasha al-Hashimi, His Excellency Minister of Defense Ja'far Pasha
Al-Askari, His Excellency Minister of Finance Rauf Bey al-Bahrani, His Excellency Tahsin Bey Qadri, His Excellency the Mayor of the
Capital, the Director of Baghdad Education, and a large gathering of the country's notables, government figures, and a number of
ladies and misses.
The school courtyard was decorated with the most beautiful ornaments, featuring a beautiful stage at the front, upon which were some blind persons
with various musical instruments in their hands, led by their chief Bahjat Effendi, who was playing the piano with the troupe of
the blind, which amazed the attendees.
As it neared half past seven, Professor Ezra Effendi Haddad rose and welcomed
the attendees, thanking them for accepting the invitation, then praised the memory of Sir Eliezer Kadoorie who built the aforementioned
home in memory of his late father Silas Kadoorie, and then proceeded to introduce the speakers one after another.

and others for displaying various products made by the blind, in addition to a hall for lectures and meetings, a music room, and a dining room,
and during that time, the students were devoted to their work, representing the most beautiful image of the work carried out by the Committee of the House of
Consolation for the Blind with the support of Sir Eliezer Kadoorie.
As for the turnout to visit the House of Consolation, it was very great, and the door remained open to visitors throughout the day.
We have understood that His Excellency Yassin Pasha al-Hashimi and Ja'far Pasha al-Askari sent telegrams to Sir
Eliezer Kadoorie expressing their gratitude and praise for his work, and likewise, telegrams of thanks and praise were sent to the Sir
from the leadership of the Jewish community, the Committee for the Consolation of the Blind, and the Lay Council.
