An Appeal to the Sons of the Israelite Community in Baghdad
To the Honorable: ⟦line⟧ Respected
After Greetings:
Our association has been established under the name "Association for Aiding Poor Israelite Girls for Marriage"
That was on October 21st, the year 945. During this period, it has received great support from the honorable sons
of the community through the money and gifts they donated and their attendance at the ceremonies previously held
and the charitable bazaar which was held twice, namely last year and the year before. Our association was able, with what it obtained
from those revenues, to open a school two years ago under the name "Charitable Sewing and Embroidery School
for Girls" located at Ras al-Qarya near the "Al-Khassaki Mosque," where it admitted two hundred and fifty girls
from the poor class who were in a pitiable state. They are now learning sewing and embroidery to arm themselves
with a sharp weapon against unemployment and the undesirable consequences that lie behind it. For the needle and thread are the poor girl's
weapon and her permanent capital.
Our association has assisted approximately one hundred and sixty girls with financial aid for their marriages until the end of
February of the year 948. If this number is small, then this is what calls for haste in extending a helping hand and support
so that the association can carry out the many duties incumbent upon it to help the largest possible number.
Furthermore, our association has decided to hold the third charitable bazaar during the Passover holiday on Tuesday
corresponding to April 27, 1948, at the Adour Aboudi Secondary School for Girls near the American Embassy. Therefore, we
invite the honorable members of our community to contribute to the establishment and revival of this bazaar with what their generous hands bestow
of various goods, funds, and gifts that will be sold in this bazaar. The price of the ticket will be (250)
two hundred and fifty fils. We invite you and call upon you to take part in actual contribution and noble humanitarian work, so respond to
the call to rescue the daughters of your community from the shame and vice they might fall into, which can be avoided before it happens.
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." May God preserve you as a treasure for chivalry and generosity.

His Excellency, President of the Honorable Israelite Lay Council
After presenting respects.
With reference to the ongoing communication between us, ending with your letter dated 28 / 11 / 1945.
Our project is very important and aims to treat a major social scourge, complete a prominent deficiency, and reform
a major defect in the Israelite community in Baghdad. Our subject was not the distribution of money to
poor girls as assistance for their marriage, but rather it is the subject of opening sewing and knitting institutions and childcare institutes
and others, to include all poor Israelite girls to secure their future and protect their honor, which is the honor of
every individual of the community.
Our society would like to draw the attention of your esteemed council to a fact, which is that almost all sons
of the community appreciated this project as it deserves, and the society received encouragement from them suitable for the present
circumstances. We also thank your esteemed council for its appreciation of the society's efforts in this project of its,
as it was the first to encourage it morally in bringing it into existence. However, this encouragement alone
is not sufficient, as is not hidden from your esteemed council. We were pleased - as we were expecting - when we received your letter
containing the good news of encouragement from the material aspect. However, it stated that the esteemed council
will decide for the project a grant from the community fund in the coming year, which begins from the first of
April 1946.
This postponement is something that breaks our resolve in undertaking the necessary projects. It is not hidden from
your esteemed council that the best of charity is the swiftest. And postponing the matter of assistance for a long period like this
is something that paralyzes the hands of the society, which has allocated a large part of its time to undertake the useful industrial projects
it thought of. We have taken it upon ourselves to carry a heavy burden and we have sacrificed and will sacrifice much of our time
for the sake of this project, and we must carry it out with the utmost speed. Delaying for a period of
months is something that does not harmonize with the noble goal we have undertaken to implement.
Therefore, our society requests that you take this cause of ours into consideration in an urgent manner and
that you allocate to our society a sufficient grant to be paid immediately on account of the budget for the six months ending on
31 March 1946, to be able to implement its resolutions which have remained suspended upon your financial and moral assistance
together. To your excellency, more thanks and respect.
Sincerely,
President of the Society

After offering respect.
With reference and subsequent to our verbal conversation with your esteemed council in the session
last Monday evening, falling on 17 / 12 / 1945.
We wish to repeat our previous presentations that we offered in the aforementioned session and say that the institution
The first that our society intends to open very urgently needs four thousand dinars, and since
we now have two thousand dinars of it, we have firm hope that your esteemed council will take this case into
consideration and decide to pay us a grant of one thousand dinars to be paid at once now, and if that is not possible,
our society hopes that it will be in two equal installments, one immediate and the second at the beginning of the year
the next financial year.
Our society hopes that your esteemed council will strengthen its resolve and support it for the
sake of laying the foundation stone for the beneficial projects it intends to undertake.
This, and to your Excellency further respect.

Respectfully,
With reference to your letter numbered 6 / 945 dated 20 / 12 / 945
The Council reviewed your letter referred to above in its meeting held on 21 / 1 / 946
And decided after deliberation to approve granting you a financial aid of (100) Dinars, one hundred Dinars, by check number
483832 dated 22 January 946 on the Ottoman Bank. The Council wished to provide
more financial assistance than this, but upon reviewing the Council's financial situation, it was found to be in a deficit.
This granted amount is merely an annual encouragement for your society. The Council also decided to reconsider the matter
of granting you another aid when submitting the budget for the next fiscal year beginning on April 1, 1946.
Please kindly acknowledge your receipt of the above-mentioned amount, and we wish your society success and prosperity.
