and you know, so it is not necessary for us to repeat the words
in this matter, just as those who love goodness
do it without repetition, and you are among them.
And it was in the intention that we write to you a letter
detailed regarding the matter of the school and its condition,
but at the moment there is no time, and I
will write to you about the school in the coming hour (time),
God willing, Exalted be He. And peace be upon you,

With the help of God. My beloved, His Honor, Mr. Yosef, may his Rock protect him, son of my beloved, Mr. Nissim, may his Rock protect him.
I inquire of his welfare as is fitting for him, his household, and all those associated with him.
Following this, I have come to inform him that on this day there reached
me his letter with the letter enclosed therein, and I read it and rejoiced
at your well-being and at the goodness which God, blessed and exalted be He, has bestowed upon you,
for He, blessed be He, is good to all, and the eyes of all look to Him, and He
gives them their food in its season and satisfies the desire of every living thing.
And concerning what His Honor wrote regarding the matter of the partnership which is
between us, behold His Honor knows that until now we have not made a meticulous
accounting, but rather by way of estimation and mere conjecture.
And now, when His Honor wishes to make a just and true accounting,
behold we are ready and prepared for this at any time and at any
hour that His Honor wishes. However, it is necessary that the matter be
in the presence of both parties so that the truth may be clarified
and our judgment shall come to light. And know that we shall not refrain
from giving to each and every person what is due to him according to
the law and the truth, and peace is beloved by all. And would that
this heart of ours were to fear the Lord and keep His commandments all the days,
so that it may be well with us and our children forever. And now, let it not be a grievance
to His Honor that I delayed in replying to him, for the preoccupations
have increased upon us greatly and we have no leisure even for one hour,
and what is more, I was slightly ill during these days,
but blessed be the Healer of the sick, who in His great mercies
has healed me and revived me and given me strength to stand before Him
and to serve Him in truth and integrity; may the name of the Lord be blessed
from now and forever. And peace be upon His Honor and upon all that is his,
as his own soul and as the soul of his faithful beloved friend.

Master of peace, King to whom peace belongs, bless Your people with peace.
For You are the King of peace, and our eyes look toward You for peace.
And bless us with the threefold blessing in the Torah written by the hand of Moses
Your servant, spoken by the mouth of Aaron and his sons, the priests, Your holy people,
as it is said: May the Lord bless you and keep you; May the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you;
May the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. And they shall put My name upon the children of
Israel, and I will bless them. May it be Your will, O Lord my God and God of

and combined in them, and in their vowels and their cantillation marks, that You bestow upon us
an abundance of blessing, life, kindness, and peace, and bless us with a complete blessing
with great strength and peace, and protect us and guard us from all kinds of dispute,
quarrel, and strife, and nullify from us and from all Your people the House of Israel,
wherever they may be, all kinds of hatred, enmity, jealousy, and rivalry.
And plant between us and all Your people Israel love, brotherhood, peace,
and friendship, and remove groundless hatred from among us, and may we love one another
with a willing soul and a whole heart, and may the scripture written be fulfilled in us:
And David was successful in all his ways, and the Lord was with him. Do not let our feet
falter, and may our Guardian not slumber. For He will command His angels for you, to guard you
in all your ways. The Lord shall guard your going out and your coming in, from now and forever.

And it came to pass on the eighth day, that Moses called Aaron and his sons, and the elders of Israel;
And he said unto Aaron, Take thee a young calf for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering,
without blemish, and offer them before the Lord. And unto the children of Israel thou shalt speak, saying,
Take ye a kid of the goats for a sin offering; and a calf and a lamb, both of the first year, without blemish, for a burnt offering;
Also a bullock and a ram for peace offerings, to sacrifice before the Lord; and a meat offering mingled with oil:
for to day the Lord will appear unto you. And they brought that which Moses commanded before
the tabernacle of the congregation: and all the congregation drew near and stood before the Lord. And Moses said,
This is the thing which the Lord commanded that ye should do: and the glory of the Lord shall appear unto you.
And Moses said unto Aaron, Go unto the altar, and offer thy sin offering,
and thy burnt offering, and make an atonement for thyself, and for the people: and offer the offering of the people,
and make an atonement for them; as the Lord commanded. Aaron therefore went unto the altar, and slew
the calf of the sin offering, which was for himself. And the sons of Aaron brought the blood unto him:
and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood at
the bottom of the altar: And the fat, and the kidneys, and the caul above the liver
of the sin offering, he burnt upon the altar; as the Lord commanded Moses.
And the flesh and the hide he burnt with fire without the camp. And he slew
the burnt offering; and Aaron's sons presented unto him the blood, which he sprinkled round about upon the altar.
And they presented the burnt offering unto him, with the pieces thereof, and the head: and he burnt them
upon the altar. And he did wash the inwards and the legs, and burnt them upon the burnt offering
on the altar. And he brought the people's offering, and took the goat, which was the sin offering
for the people, and slew it, and offered it for sin, as the first. And he brought the burnt offering,
and offered it according to the manner. And he brought the meat offering, and took an handful thereof, and burnt it
upon the altar, beside the burnt sacrifice of the morning. He slew also the bullock and the ram
for a sacrifice of peace offerings, which was for the people: and Aaron's sons presented unto him the blood,
which he sprinkled upon the altar round about, And the fat of the bullock and of the ram,
the rump, and that which covereth the inwards, and the kidneys, and the caul above the liver: And they put the fat
upon the breasts, and he burnt the fat upon the altar: And the breasts and the right
shoulder Aaron waved for a wave offering before the Lord; as Moses commanded.

Thursday, 23rd of Kislev, in the year 5687, and I, your humble servant
Yosef Baruch David Yosef Chaim of blessed memory, write this as a record
that on this day I entered the new apartment which I built
for myself and the members of my household; may the Blessed Name grant us merit to dwell in it in joy
and with a good heart, and may we merit to raise in it sons and grandsons engaged
in Torah and in commandments, Amen, may it be His will.

Friday, Parashat Va'etchanan, the year 5688 according to the minor era, Baghdad
A sermon delivered by the Sage Yosef Hayyim, may his Rock and Redeemer protect him
In the Great Synagogue, Salat al-Kabiri, may God protect it
I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, and I will glorify Your name forever
For Your kindness is great toward me, and You have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol
O God, the arrogant have risen against me, and a band of ruthless men has sought my life
They have not set You before them; but You, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger
And abundant in kindness and truth; turn to me and be gracious to me, give Your strength to Your servant
And save the son of Your handmaid; work a sign for me for good, that they may see
My enemies, and be ashamed, for You, O Lord, have helped me and comforted me
This is what the scripture says in Parashat Va'etchanan: And I pleaded with the Lord
At that time, saying: O Lord God, You have begun to show
Your servant Your greatness and Your strong hand, for what god is there
In heaven or on earth who can perform according to Your deeds and Your mighty acts?
Let me cross over, please, and see the good land that is beyond the Jordan
This good mountain and the Lebanon; and the Lord was angry with me on your account
And did not listen to me, and the Lord said to me: Enough for you! Do not speak
To Me anymore about this matter; go up to the top of the peak and lift up your eyes
To the west, the north, the south, and the east, and see with your eyes, for you shall not
Cross this Jordan; and command Joshua, and strengthen him, and encourage him
For he shall cross over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the
Land that you will see; and we remained in the valley opposite Beth-peor
And one must understand in these verses, for seemingly one should be precise in them
Greatly: first, in what is written 'And I pleaded' (Va'etchanan), for it should have said 'And I prayed'; what is 'And I pleaded'?
Furthermore, saying 'At that time' which is redundant, for it is obvious that at that
Hour he prayed; and furthermore, saying 'saying' (le'amor) which has no meaning
Furthermore, saying 'O Lord God' (Adonai YHWH), for why did he mention two names?
Furthermore, saying 'You have begun to show Your servant etc.'
For how is this an argument for his prayer? And furthermore, saying 'for what god is there
In heaven or on earth etc.' for what is the relevance of this praise here?
Furthermore, saying 'Let me cross over, please' (E'ebra na), for it should have said 'Let me cross'
(E'ebor) please, and what is 'E'ebra'? And furthermore, saying 'the good mountain this
And the Lebanon' for it should have said 'and this good mountain and the Lebanon'

I will thank You with great strength to God <del>M</del> awesome in deeds -
With all my heart I will praise and seek these
While my soul is within me, my God, I will exalt You
And I will thank Your name forever, for You have done wonders
Counsels from afar, faithfulness and truth, for You are
My refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust
Shield and horn of my salvation, my high tower and my refuge
And I will call ⟦...⟧ praised I will call, and from my enemies
I shall be saved, for Your kindness is great toward me, and You have delivered
My soul from the lowest depths. I will thank You, O Lord my God
With all my heart, and I will honor Your name forever, for
Your kindness is great toward me, and You have delivered my soul from the lowest
Depths. O God, the insolent have risen against me, and a congregation of
Violent men have sought my soul, and have not set You before them
But You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, longsuffering
And abundant in kindness and truth. Turn to me and have mercy on me; give
Your strength to Your servant, and save the son of Your handmaid. Show
Me a sign for good, that my enemies may see it and be ashamed
Because You, O Lord, have helped me and comforted me. I will exalt You
O Lord, for You have lifted me up, and have not let my enemies rejoice over me
O Lord my God, I cried out to You, and You healed me. O Lord
You brought up my soul from the grave; You kept me alive from among those who go down
To the pit. Sing to the Lord, O His godly ones, and give thanks to His holy
Name. For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for a lifetime
Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. And I
Said in my prosperity, I shall never be moved. O Lord
By Your favor You have made my mountain stand strong; You hid
Your face, and I was troubled. To You, O Lord, I called
And to the Lord I made supplication. What profit is there in my blood, when I go down
To the pit? Shall the dust praise You? Shall it declare Your truth?
Hear, O Lord, and have mercy on me; Lord, be my helper
You have turned my mourning into dancing for me; You have put off my sackcloth
And clothed me with gladness, to the end that my glory may sing praise to You
And not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to You forever
I will thank You, O Lord, for though You were angry with me, Your anger is turned away
And You comfort me. Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust
