These are archival documents from the Baghdadi Jewish community. Included are rental agreements between the President of the Jewish community and various community members; ledgers of property holdings; correspondence regarding the distribution of endowments to schools and hospitals; legal paperwork for establishment of an endowment; insurance policy invoices from the South British Insurance Company, L’Union and the Iraq Insurance Office; insurance policies issued by the Legal & General Assurance Society Limited and the South British Insurance Company, electricity and water bills; and contracts. The insurance policies cover everything from fire and auto to typewriters and Persian rugs. Many of the documents are administered by the Jewish Lay Council, overseen by Eliyahu Hiam Youfek or Heskel David Shemtob.

An agreement was reached between Mr. Eliyahu Hayyim Tawfiq, President of the Israeli Lay Council in

one thousand nine hundred and forty-two AD until the end of March 1943 one thousand nine hundred and forty-
three for a cash rent of twenty-five Dinars for the mentioned period, and the
Lessee has been authorized hereby to take the mentioned place as a gut factory in accordance with the instructions of the health authority
provided that the costs for its repair and making it compliant with health conditions are the responsibility of the Lessee only,
and likewise, the Lessee must pay any fees or other expenses required to be spent on the mentioned factory
during the lease period.
The Council acknowledges that it has received from the Lessee the full rent amounting to twenty-five
Dinars in cash, and allowed the Lessee to use the leased property according to the conditions mentioned above, provided that he
vacates the leased property upon maturity and hands it over to the Council free of encumbrances. Accordingly, this
contract was drafted in two copies, Baghdad, June 12, 1942.

that we have received the rent for the contracted year, amounting to fifty Dinars in cash from you
and by this, the rental contract is considered limited until the end of March 944.

March 946, nineteen hundred and forty-six, for a cash rent of fifty Dinars. The
Tenant is hereby authorized to use the aforementioned premises as a gut factory in accordance with the instructions of the health authorities,
provided that the costs for its repair and making it compliant with health conditions shall be the sole responsibility of the Tenant, and likewise
the Tenant must pay any fees or other expenses required to be spent on the aforementioned factory during
the lease term.
The Council acknowledges that it has received the full rent from the Tenant, amounting to fifty Dinars
in cash, and has permitted the Tenant to use the leased property according to the conditions mentioned above, provided that he vacates
the leased property upon maturity and hands it over to the Council free of encumbrances. Accordingly, this
contract was drawn up in two copies.
