President of the Israelite Community
President of the Lay Council
Baghdad
I received your letter dated March 18, which was delivered to me by Mr. M. Laniado, the lawyer in Jerusalem, for the distribution of
Baghdad's share. I am prepared to follow the same method that my predecessor in office had followed for the distribution of the
Jerusalem share.
I also agree to the proposed committee and its members. As suggested, the committee needs the recommendation of the
British Consul in Baghdad.
It is stipulated that the selection must be from among those institutions that were existing at the time of the death of the <del>dear</del>
testator R. A. Gubbay, who died on November 27, 1922, and that synagogues are not to participate in the distributions
designated for Israelite charitable institutions.
I list below the Israelite institutions in Baghdad that have submitted their petitions up to August 31, 1938
(which was the deadline set for accepting petitions), and the selection must be made from among these institutions while ⟦taking into account⟧ what was mentioned
above.
I hold the following amounts for the Israelite charitable institutions in Baghdad:
5% Loan 1945/55 for 91,400/- Rupees (Nominal Value)
3% Defense Bonds for the year 1946 for 65,700/- (Nominal Value)
837-12-1 Rupees Cash Balance
The value of these bonds is calculated as follows:
Rupees
326,003-12-0 | 5% Loan 1945/55 for 91,400/- Rupees | 111-14-0 Rupees
66,521-4-0 | 3% Defense Bonds for the year 1946 for 65,700/- Rupees | 10-4-10 Rupees
837-12-1 | Cash balance as mentioned above
7,285-0-0 | Interest due April 14, 1941 on 5% Debt 1945/55 for 291,400 Rupees
⟦line⟧
400,647-12-1
Which is an amount estimated at 29,900/- Pounds Sterling. I shall be glad to hear from you soon
and to see Mr. Laniado further on this matter.

Advocate

Baghdad the 16th March 1941.
Dear Sir,
Subject:- Contribution to the Ezra Assophair's tomb.
With reference to your letter No.352 dated the 29th January
1941.
I have the honour to inform you that as a result of my inquiry
I find that two institutions are in great need of help viz the Ezra
assophair's and the Madrash Talmud Tora, as these two institutions grow
religious pupils, and as the war began, no funds could be obtained from
abroad. The two institutions became in a very delapidated condition ⟦line⟧
which necessitate a considerable amount for reconstruction of the most
parts of their existing building which became in ruined condition. The
Shrine of Ezra assophair includes actually thirty families who form a
religious party to read the bible continually, but in view of the war
conditions, no donations could be obtained now a day, and as these fami-
lies cannot be transferred elsewhere, which means the abandoning of the
shrine and this is impossible, we expect a reconsideration of the matter.
As regards the Midrash Talmud Tora, this institution includes 2000 poor
students with 50 teachers and this institution as we said grow Rabbis
and this is the only institution remaining in Baghdad, but in Iraq all
and if funds are available, this institution will remain in encouraging
religious pupils, and as the monies bequeathed by the donor, are special-
ly assigned for such purposes, we hope that the matter will have your
sympathetic reconsideration. Other institutions are ignored by us and we
think that if a reference is made to the Baith Din Saideq in Baghdad,
you will no doubt have other particulars which will render a great help
for this achievement.
Yours faithfully,

25 March 941
Head of the Jewish Community
President of the Lay Council
Baghdad
I received your letter dated 18 March, which was delivered to me by Mr. M. Laniado, the lawyer in Jerusalem, regarding the distribution of the
Baghdad share; I am prepared to follow the same method that my predecessor in office had followed for the distribution of the
Jerusalem share.
I also agree to the proposed committee and its members. As per the proposal, the committee requires the recommendation of
the British Consul in Baghdad.
It is stipulated that the selection must be from among those institutions that were existing at the time of the death of the <del>petitions</del>
testator R. A. Gabbay, who died on 27 November 1922, and that synagogues are not to participate in the distributions
allocated to Jewish charitable institutions.
I set out below the list of Jewish institutions in Baghdad whose petitions I received until 31 August 1938
(which is the deadline set for accepting petitions) and the selection must be made from among these institutions, taking into ⟦account⟧ what was mentioned
above.
I hold the following amounts for the Jewish charitable institutions in Baghdad:
5% Loan 45/1955 for -/2,91,400 Rupees (nominal value)
3% Defense Bonds for the year 1946 for -/65,700 (nominal value)
1-12-837 Rupees cash balance
The value of these bonds is calculated as follows:
Rupees
5% Loan 45/1955 for -/2,91,400 Rupees 111-1-140 % | 3,24,600-3-12
3% Defense Bonds for the year 1946 for -/65,700 Rupees 101-1-400 % | 66,521-4-0
Cash balance as mentioned above | 837-12-1
Interest due 14 April 941 on 5% Debt 45/1955 for Rupees 291400 | 7,285-0-0
 | 4,00,647-12-1
Which is an amount estimated at -/29,900 Pounds Sterling. I will be pleased to hear from you soon
and to see Mr. Laniado further in this case.

MATERNITY WARD ASSOCIATION,
Founded 1934
BAGHDAD
Association for the Relief of Nursing Mothers
Baghdad, April 25, 1941
To the Honorable Chairman of the Advisory Committee for the Estate of the Late Raphael Gabbay,
After greetings and respect,
There is no doubt that the charitable works achieved by the Association for the Relief of Nursing Mothers since its formation
until now are not hidden from your esteemed committee, and expanding the scope of these works and achieving the goals
of the association by providing effective aid to poor nursing mothers depends on the assistance of people of benevolence.
Since the late Raphael Gabbay bequeathed his estate to Israeli charitable institutions, and our association
is among the institutions intended by this will, we ask your excellency to kindly draw the attention of the
esteemed committee to our charitable association, with the hope that it will be among the charitable institutions for which
a share of the estate will be allocated. With much respect to your excellency.
