To the Honorable President of the Israelite Community
The Petition
Sir, my Lord
We inform you that we are a poor family living in the Mash'al shelter
in the Torah [district], and our family consists of two children and I am pregnant
and my husband, noting that my husband has been unemployed for a while and is sick, and our condition is very
bad due to hunger and distress, and therefore we have come with this petition
imploring your order for a weekly assistance for us to live on
and make this for the sake of God, for God does not waste the reward of the doers of good
noting that we have no one but God and you, the virtuous benefactors
In the past, my husband was working and we did not need anything
and therefore I never came to the community for help, but at this time
currently, if we were not in need, I would not have asked for help
And you know that children do not understand if there is [food] or not, they just want to eat
This is what I submit to your honorable selves
The matter is yours, with thanks

To the Honorable Chairman of the Administrative Committee of the Mosaic Community
Presented to your presence
Since my husband passed away, he left me three daughters and I have a son from him aged eight years, and I have
no supporter here. I hope from your kindness that you treat me as you treat the rest of the poor. Previously, I was given
a quarter of a dinar every day, and as this amount was not sufficient for living, and the assistance stopped
from Baghdad ⟦sufficiently⟧ due to the presence of the mentioned boy, I was unable to travel. Therefore, I hope you will assign me
an amount so that I can live with this child of mine. Peace be upon you.

The Honorable Rabbi Sassoon Khedhouri, may God preserve him, the respected presence
What is presented to your Excellency is that I, Saboun Saqeel Hazna, was appointed before the departure
of the Jews to perform the service of the Torah of Sitt Zilkha. I have been for a period of three
years serving this Torah and maintaining its tools and its silver-plated Torah scrolls.
I guarded the safe of the Sefarim, which some individuals of the previous community
conspired to break the Sefarim and open them, and they broke the locks. When
I saw them, they told me: "Shaul Al-Sulayman sent us." I prevented them from doing that
and stood against them. They began waiting for opportunities to entrap me and harm me
constantly, and they did all kinds of harm to me. By your strength and high resolve,
I obeyed your previous orders and disobeyed their order. My patience is for God until
this moment, until your justice and esteemed appreciation. I am at your service
whatever you wish, and whatever you command me, I shall obey. Hoping from God
and from your Eminence to have mercy on us with the eye of kindness and benevolence by issuing
your order to grant me a monthly salary, similar to the salary of the Torah of Rabbi
Saqeel, whose son spoke with Rabbi Daoud and secured a salary for him.
Please, by your grace, do not disappoint us, and you shall have reward and merit from God.
Sincerely,
Saboun Saqeel Hazna
