UNIVERSITY OF LONDON GENERAL CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION EXAMINATION OVERSEAS
The statement on the other side of this form shows grades awarded to you at the Advanced and/or the Ordinary level in each subject for which you entered. This statement is sent before the issue of Certificates and the University reserves the right to correct it. The document is not a Certificate and must not be regarded as such. No further information can be given about the results; the decisions of the Examiners, which are reached after the most careful consideration, are final.
Advanced Level
At this level there are five grades of pass in descending order of merit, namely A, B, C, D and E. The word F, followed by the position of the candidate in the list of those absence from the examination or for whom no script has been received in one or more papers of the subject, or option other than the one for which you entered, no result is given.
There are no oral tests in the languages at this level.
Ordinary Level
At this level grades A, B, C, D and E are grades of pass in descending order of merit, reading from left to right, and grade F, followed by the word FAIL, denotes failure. Grade O, followed by ORD, at this level indicates a compensatory Ordinary level pass. The words FAIL and ORD apply to the subject as a whole. An 'X' indicates absence from the examination in a subject. 'Z' indicates that a script has been received in answer to questions set on a subject, syllabus or option other than the one for which you entered, and no result is given.
In Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Physics and Zoology, two grades are given. The first represents the grade obtained in the subject as a whole, including the practical test; on the right of this appears the grade given in the practical test only.
Candidates who entered at this level for both Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics but who passed only in Papers I, II and III are awarded passes in Pure Mathematics and Mathematics (Pure and Applied); a compensatory pass at Ordinary level in Applied Mathematics may also be given. Candidates who entered only in Papers I, II and III are awarded a pass in Mathematics (Pure and Applied); compensatory passes at Ordinary level in Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics may also be given.
There are no oral tests in the languages at this level except for certain schools in West Africa. For candidates from these schools there are two grades in French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish. The first represents the result obtained in the subject as a whole including the oral test. On the right of this appears the grade given in the oral examination only. The oral grades are A, B, C, D, E and F. Failure in the oral test does not necessarily indicate failure in the subject as a whole.
Special Provision Governing the Award of Certificates
Private candidates who sit at centres in certain countries and who, at the time of entry, do not hold a qualification which exempts them, are required to pass in three subjects including English Language or in three subjects with a satisfactory standard of attainment in English Language (grade F) in order to qualify for a Certificate. The words "Certificate will not be issued" will appear at the bottom of the form overleaf whenever such a candidate fails to qualify for the award of a Certificate.

The notification of result, which is issued to every candidate, is not a Certificate.
Successful candidates receive, in addition, a Certificate recording the tests in which they
have passed.
No reliance should be placed on the accuracy of this result slip should there be
any alteration or erasure or tear in it.
Candidates whose result in the whole examination is shown as "Failed in Oral
Tests only" can take the oral tests alone on one occasion, not more than 14 months after
the date of the examination shown on the front of this notification. They must offer
Dictation, Reading and Conversation and present this notification to the Local Secretary
when making their entry. If successful in the oral tests they will be awarded a Certificate.
