View interactive document page

Description

These are documents from the Baghdadi Jewish Community. They contain correspondence regarding marriages, divorces, civil disputes; the birthday celebrations of the Iraqi king, responses to inquires about the treatment of Iraqi Jews under Iraq’s citizenship laws, the history of Jews in Iraq, and the provision of Jewish artifacts to the Iraqi Museum. There are receipts for furniture stores and other vendors, invoices; budget allocations, deficits, and planning for various community organizations and institutions; ritual slaughtering administration, names of butchers with the numbers of animals slaughtered, names of community organization members, ledgers of payments for goods or fees, building plans, provisions for school children, concerns over hospital food distribution, blanket distribution to the poor, receptions, meetings, shipment orders, import and export of goods, the care of orphans, and a census on the number of synagogues in Baghdad in 1945 (40). There are copies of a printed text titled “Appeal to Save the Children.” Letters include: the President of the Jewish Community to the Controller of Foodstuffs in Baghdad thanking the Controller for the allotment of sugar and tea for the students at the Rahel Shamoon School; addressing complaints at the Meir Elias Hospital in Baghdad; purchasing blankets for the poor via the Poor Welfare Society; sending money rather than clothes from an importer in New York City to the poor in Baghdad since clothing costs have gone up.

His Excellency Mr. Abdul Majid Allawi
The Honorable Minister of Social Affairs - Baghdad
After greetings and respect,
I have learned that the Syrian authorities refuse to grant transit permits through their territory for those afflicted
with tuberculosis from among the members of this community whom your esteemed ministry is sending to Lebanon for treatment
at the government's expense.
In view of my knowledge of the sympathy Your Excellency holds for these miserable people, I saw fit
to request that you take the measures you deem appropriate to secure their passage to their sanatoriums.
I particularly hope that the case of the tuberculosis patient Saleh Munshi Radwan, who received
this kindness from your esteemed ministry, receives the attention it deserves, so that passage through Syrian territory
is secured for him and his fellow tuberculosis patients.
Please accept, Your Excellency, my utmost thanks in advance and great respect.
From the sincere,

To His Excellency the respected Abu Hola, your esteemed embassy has recently announced news regarding
the heads of the awards in all copies, whose number of members reaches one hundred and seventy-eight souls. We inform you
that the number of award heads, their language, is one hundred and seventy-eight souls living in the other commission building, and most of them
built the building, living in seven rooms on the second floor, and everyone lives in each house, no less than seven
and there are other buildings, and their remaining funds are only twenty-eight, and next to it across the remaining house
every house poses a danger due to the extreme overcrowding under the existing departments there. We have requested from your Excellency to act as an agent

Reference to your letter No. 12878 dated 7/24/945
We have previously explained to you in our numerous meetings that the community fund is in a position
that does not allow it to spend on improving this slaughterhouse, which is currently used as a public
slaughterhouse.
What we would like to add is that we have learned that the Ministry of Finance has a credit of fifty
thousand dinars to be spent on improving slaughterhouses in the provinces.
You will no doubt agree with us that the Jewish community, by constructing this slaughterhouse at its own
expense, has lifted a burden from the treasury, especially since we did not hesitate when the Municipality requested to place
the slaughterhouse at its disposal for use without charge as a public slaughterhouse on a temporary basis, and many years
have passed since then, during which the slaughterhouse building suffered considerable damage. In this regard, it is most deserving of the attention
and care of the esteemed government, and it would be fair to allocate a portion of the aforementioned amount designated
for improving slaughterhouses to it. Therefore, we request your mediation with the venerable Ministry of Finance to allocate an
appropriate amount for the purpose of carrying out comprehensive repairs in the Jewish slaughterhouse in Rusafa, in accordance with what you see
fit for the public interest.
