To His Excellency, the Head of the Honorable Iraqi Jewish Community
What is presented to your Excellency:
About two months ago, the ⟦...⟧ River destroyed the village of Baneh located in Iran ⟦...⟧
and destroyed it completely; not a single house remained without destruction. Its inhabitants were forced to flee to the lands of
Iran, and those who could not, fled to Iraq and settled in Sulaymaniyah, Halabja, Penjwin,
and other villages in Iraq. They are approximately fifty Jewish families who settled in Iraq.
When the Iraqi government learned of the catastrophe that befell them, it took pity on them and granted them residency in its lands.
Now, the aforementioned are safe in their dwellings and have begun their procedures, and they are not in need of official
assistance.
However, today His Excellency the Governor of Sulaymaniyah informed them of the issuance of the Iraqi government's order to deport them from Iraq
to Iran. A group of the notables of the town of Sulaymaniyah requested a grace period from His Excellency the Governor
for their stay in Iraq until the end of the winter season, if the Iraqi government does not accept their naturalization
with Iraqi citizenship, because the aforementioned did not come to Iraq except for a known reason, which is
the destruction of their homeland, the burning of their dwellings and homes, and the lack of refuge and shelter to live in.
Furthermore, it is now the winter season, the season of biting cold, especially the cold that
begins there due to the heavy snowfall, the likes of which does not exist in the lands of Iraq. The snow cuts off the roads
from one village to another. If the Iraqi government deports them to their lands, what is ⟦their luck/fate⟧ at the borders of
Iraq? Once they reach the borders of Iran, where will they go and where will they live,
and what will be their situation in this winter season? Your Excellency knows that wild animals
in winter do not survive without shelter; even in Iran, their livestock live inside the houses
due to the severity of the cold. How can the conscience of justice accept that these families, with their young
children, be deported to a place unfit for living, unknown, and driven to an undetermined location? When
we appealed for mercy from His Excellency the Governor, he replied that the order was issued by the government.
Therefore, in the name of the Jewish community of Sulaymaniyah and the free delegates from the people of the town of Baneh,
and in the name of human justice and the status and authority of the Jewish [leadership], we implore Your Excellency to mediate
with the Minister of Interior to accept their naturalization with Iraqi citizenship, or if that is not possible, to postpone their deportation
until the end of the winter season and keep them this winter in Iraq because, as we explained above,
their land is now covered in snow—four days [is all it takes] for the snow to cover it—and especially these afflicted people
do not have a house or a hut to take refuge in and live in. If they travel to Iran,
they must sleep in the middle of the snow and they and their children will die, and ⟦their news⟧ will reach us and nothing else.
O Excellency the President, does your Excellency's conscience accept that from among the sons of our community and our children,
fifty families—men and their children and the free members of their families—should die without shelter or refuge, in addition to
the catastrophe that befell them? Your Excellency knows that we have no sanctuary, savior, or compassionate [one]
besides the Creator, the Almighty, and then Your Excellency and the one responsible for this situation.
⟦illegible⟧
All of Israel affected by the aforementioned disaster and all the children of Israel, brigade of ⟦...⟧ the compassionate
We hope from your Excellency and await your exertion of effort to completely rescue the members of the community
the Israelites from death, and we await your initiative in accepting their naturalization first, and if
that is not possible, postponing their deportation until the end of winter, for the group, women and men, and children
great and small and infants, pray for your happiness and success from the Creator Almighty

His Beatitude, the Head of the Israelite Community, the Respected Dayan
May his virtue endure
Greetings and respect
I request your kindness to allow me to present this letter of mine, which is an annex to my letter dated 11 / 20 / 1944
regarding a fundamental point, which is the circumstances estimated on my part, being confident and reassured by the respected President and his generous Council
that their justice will encompass me. I know that if the question is put to Shlomo Sasson about Ezra and Edouard ⟦their rights⟧ all, I fear he will be possessed [by greed]
and will refute - that these monies do not belong to him but to his sister Flora and her husband, Mr. Ezra Abboudi Hayyim, but it is contrary
to what he claims; he is the one who harrasses us in the courts and official proceedings in a vengeful manner and nothing else, O Virtuous President. So would
he be satisfied that Mr. Ezra and his family halted the proceedings and stopped the work after receiving the one hundred and fifty dinars, and they stopped
the procedural work officially, and Flora stopped, and the witnesses know the lawsuit, and Mr. Karmi, Eliyahu's representative, it is their right
since they left no connection for Shlomo Sasson in this case and traveled to Iran for a short period, they will return soon.
If he were truthful, he would have no right to appeal to the execution office and request seizure; he should leave it for the victim, Mr. Ezra. I acknowledge in my conscience that I am a person of integrity
not involved in these actions of Shlomo Sasson, and I fear he might evade [responsibility], but he is the one in total control and I am ready
before the virtue of the generous Head of the Israelite Community and his respected Spiritual and Lay Councils, that their kindness encompasses me as
it has encompassed the weak who fall prey to the strong. I implore them in His Great and Generous Name, after peace,
to your respected abodes, for justice, chivalry, and fairness. Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds. In conclusion, please accept our highest respect.

To His Eminence, the Head of the Israelite Community and its President
Mr. Sassoon Khedhouri, may his virtue endure
A formal inquiry and message
Greetings and respect
I have come with this letter of mine, asking and seeking a ruling from your Eminence in the name of God and your Lord Moses, the one who spoke with God, peace be upon him, and the
respected Torah, and justice and fairness, and here it is. Is it permissible if a property was purchased from someone while the value remained with the recipient
four hundred and fifty dinars - the seized amount was taken as an excess debt and the amount received in my hand remained four hundred dinars, and after taking that
property and registering it in his name, and after that he took an additional two hundred and eight dinars, is it in the religions to take multiples of
that, and after that in a month he sold that property for thirty-eight dinars and was not satisfied and took
through execution one hundred dinars according to installments, and in addition to that he took from the rent of buildings I had in Bab al-Sharqi
in the hundreds which the Baghdad Court of First Instance ruled for, and therefore I present these grievances before the head of the Israelite community and its men,
the respected Rabbis, because your Eminence is its head and guide, and you are responsible before God and Moses, peace be upon him,
and humanity and justice, regarding them, and he is the one called Shlomo Sassoon son of the late Ezra and their souls ⟦...⟧ that
he was not satisfied with what is right, and due to his financial power he began to pursue us, and I adjure you by God, has anything similar to this case occurred? Grant us a ruling, and may you be rewarded.
We await your justice, and may you remain forever.

Baghdad, 22nd. November, 1944.
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN.
It has been noticed, during our frequent visits to
this Hospital namely "Meir Elias Hospital" that complaints of
various kinds are going on in the whole apartments of the free
admitted patients, regarding the reasonable distribution of diets
and other nourishing food, specially for the sick children. All
those concerned and authorized through the administration of the
Hospital in the liberal distribution are not, as it should be
executed, fulfilling their incumbent duties in the proper way to
the satisfaction of the patients, as specified by the good-hearted
Doctors whose well manly treatments towards the painful humanity
are greatly and forever appreciated.
This immortal and beneficent Hospital, a part of which
has been opened to accept, without prejudice, poor patients free of
charge during their long confinement until they convalesce and
restore their healthy conditions and leave this charitable Hospital.
But there is one essential point which is quite neglected in this
instance, by those who are appointed in the diet distribution.
According to the prescribed daily diet tables given by the welfare
Doctors, it came to our knowledge, through reliable source, that
nearly two thirds of the essential material, such as, sugar, eggs,
pomegranades etc. allotted to the poor invalids are absorbed by the
responsible female distributors.
In writing this report, which is not in favour of the
Hospital regarding the mal-treatment of the nourishment, we are fully
confident that the well directed organization of this Hospital is
quite ignorant of the whereabouts. We would like to stress the point
that the personal attention of all those men concerned is drawn to
the straight direction of this Hospital, and to take careful and
strict measures against these employed persons, whether they are male
or female, in the fair distribution of the necessary diets ordered
by the resident Doctors of the said Hospital and which are allotted
to the poor and free admitted invalids.
We hope that the administation concerned of this welfare
Hospital will be able to put an end to the evil conduct of all those
specialized in the diet distribution.

To whom it may concern
We have noticed during our repeated visits to Mar Elias Hospital that multiple violations are taking place
in the free department, specifically regarding the distribution of necessary food recommended by doctors for patients
in general and children in particular. Those entrusted with the task of distribution are acting in ways completely
contrary to what duty requires of them toward the poor patients and the implementation of the instructions of the working
doctors.
The establishment of this hospital is a very noble act, and even nobler is the allocation of a section of it to accept the poor
among the sick for free and care for them until they recover what they lost of health due to poverty and disease.
However, the reality of the situation has turned out to be the opposite of what is hoped for, especially by those entrusted with distributing the quantity prescribed by
the hospital doctors for the poor patients.
It has reached us that the nurses in charge are seizing two-thirds of the main food items recommended
by the hospital doctors to be dispensed to poor patients, such as sugar, eggs, rice, and other
foodstuffs.
We are confident, as we bring this ill-treatment to your attention, that the respected hospital management
is unaware of what is happening and occurring in its various departments, and we ask the esteemed management to
take strict and necessary measures against some of its employees "whether they be women or men" regarding the simplest
humanitarian rules and those most deeply affecting the health of the poor patients. We hope and emphasize that the hospital
management will work to put an end to the misconduct of those entrusted with distributing food to the hospital's poor
patients, whose violations have become clear to everyone and are no longer hidden.
To the esteemed members of the House of Commons.
We sincerely hope that you will pay great attention to this serious humanitarian matter that concerns each of us,
and intervene to save those whose health has been afflicted by poverty, and this is not a heavy burden for the zealous.

Greetings and respect
The purpose of this writing is, first, to inquire about your dear and noble well-being.
Second, to inform you that Ezra Sassoon Ishaq the money changer has come to be in a
pitiful state because during the time of the looting, they plundered his house and left him nothing, then
his partners separated from him and he remained bewildered by his situation. He claims that your Excellency loves him
and shows him kindness. Since he is ashamed to write to your Excellency directly and explain
his condition to you, he requested of me through one of his friends that I present
his case to your Excellency so that perhaps you might agree to help him because he is in great
distress. The hope is that you, who are famous for generosity and compassion, will bestow upon him an amount
granted by your generous hand. The hope is that you will not disappoint his hope in you, and we
in any case thank you in advance. May you remain [well].

The Meir Tuwaig Synagogue is located on Street No. 13 / 1 in Battaween
And this synagogue is the largest and most important synagogue for worship and performing religious
ceremonies in this part of Baghdad, and wedding ceremonies are often
held there due to its spaciousness. Therefore, many cars and people
who intend to visit this synagogue pass through Street 13 / 1 (located between
Aoun Street and Al-Alamein Street).
And since this street is unpaved, they are often exposed
to dust and mud in a harmful manner. Therefore, I have come to request Your Excellency
to order the paving of this street to ensure the comfort of the people and to preserve
their health.
Please accept, Your Excellency, the assurances of my highest respect;

We wish to clarify that the aforementioned Torahs (which are among the ancient
