We find that permission was given to the destroying angel to destroy
in everything, and permission was given to everyone who was given, as it is written:
He sent His anger in wrath, and fury, and trouble, a mission of evil angels.
Evil angels specifically, from their name that authority was given to them,
and we send them in the conversation, by five destroying angels that were given
authority to them, by five names that were given to them.
And this secret is by five, they are the ones to whom authority was given,
and permission was given to them from every side of destruction, and he appoints a charge.
The charge that was given to them, they are the ones to whom a charge was given
from every side of authority, from the side of the left that was given to them
in everything destruction, as it is written: He sent among them His fierce anger,
H Wrath A Anger W and Fury W and Trouble L to all God W and this.

It was so and Abel became a shepherd of flocks, and Cain was a tiller of the soil.
And it happened in the end of days, that Cain brought from the fruit of the ground an offering to the Lord -
And Abel, he also brought from the firstlings of his flock and from their fat, and the Lord turned
to Abel and to his offering. But to Cain and to his offering He did not turn, and it became very
vexing to Cain and his face fell. And the Lord said to Cain, why has it become vexing to you
and why has your face fallen. Is it not so that if you do well, there is uplifting, and if you do not do well,
sin crouches at the entrance, and its desire is for you, but you shall rule over it.
And Cain said to Abel his brother, and it happened when they were in the field, that Cain rose up
against Abel his brother and killed him. And the Lord said to Cain, where is Abel your brother?
And he said, I do not know; am I my brother's keeper? And He said, what have you done?
The voice of your brother's blood cries out to Me from the ground. And now, you are cursed
from the ground which opened its mouth to take your brother's blood from your hand.
When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you; a fugitive and a wanderer you shall be on the earth.
And Cain said to the Lord, my punishment is greater than I can bear. Behold, You have driven me out today
from the face of the ground, and from Your face I shall be hidden, and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and it will be
that whoever finds me will kill me. And the Lord said to him, therefore whoever kills Cain, sevenfold
vengeance shall be taken on him; and the Lord set a mark on Cain, so that whoever found him would not strike him.
And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

Portion of Vayera Chamor
Do not look at me because I am swarthy, for the sun has tanned me; my mother's sons were angry with me,
they made me a keeper of the vineyards, but my own vineyard I did not keep.
Tell me, O you whom my soul loves, where do you pasture, where do you rest the flock at noon?
For why should I be like one who veils herself beside the flocks of your companions? If you do not know, O fairest among women,
follow the tracks of the sheep and graze your kids beside the shepherds' tents.
I have likened you, my darling, to a mare among Pharaoh's chariots. Your cheeks are comely with ornaments, your neck with strings of beads.
We will make you circlets of gold with studs of silver. While the king was at his table,
my spikenard gave off its fragrance. A bundle of myrrh is my beloved to me; he shall lie between my breasts. A cluster of henna
is my beloved to me in the vineyards of En-Gedi. Behold, you are fair, my love; behold, you are fair, your eyes are like doves.
Behold, you are fair, my beloved, also pleasant; also our bed is green. The beams of our house are cedars,
our rafters are cypresses. I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys. As a lily
among the thorns, so is my love among the daughters. As an apple tree among the trees of the forest, so is my beloved
among the sons; in his shadow I delighted to sit, and his fruit was sweet to my taste. He brought me to the
banquet hall, and his banner over me was love. Sustain me with flagons, refresh me with apples,
for I am lovesick. His left hand is under my head, and his right hand embraces me.
I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, by the gazelles or by the hinds of the field

Explanation of the education of children
Every single person of Israel, whether poor or rich, is obligated to teach
his son Torah, as it is said: "And you shall teach them to your children, to speak of them."
And if his father did not teach him, he is obligated to teach himself, as it is said: "And you shall learn
them and observe to do them." And so you find that in every place study
precedes action, for study leads to action. And anyone who does not engage
neither in Torah nor in the way of the land, the settlement of the world is not sustained by him.
And a person is obligated to hire a teacher for his son, but it is not proper for a person to teach his son
for a fee, as it is said: "See, I have taught you statutes and ordinances, as the Lord
my God commanded me." Just as I am for free, so you are for free. And if he did not find someone who would teach
for free, he shall learn for a fee, as it is said: "Buy truth and do not sell it." One might think he may teach
others for a fee? The verse says: "And do not sell it." Thus you have learned that it is forbidden
to take a fee for the Torah, for the commandments, and for the Midrash, unless
he was a poor sage whose work is done by others,
or that he was idle from his work and sits and engages in Torah and has nothing
to support himself with; it is permitted for him to take a fee for idleness, and the cost of the fee
for walking, and the cost of service, and the cost of steps, and the cost of sitting, and the cost
of standing, and the cost of talking, and the cost of silence, and the cost of sleeping, and the cost
of eating, and the cost of drinking, and the cost of washing, and the cost of anointing, and the cost
of dressing, and the cost of footwear, and the cost of girding, and the cost of wrapping, and the cost
of laying Tefillin, and the cost of reciting the Shema, and the cost of prayer, and the cost
of the Grace after Meals, and the cost of all the commandments entirely:
Explanation of the commandment of Challah
Five types of grain are obligated in Challah, and these are: wheat, barley, spelt,
oats, and rye. And these five types combine with one
another for the measure of Challah, which is a tenth of an ephah, and it is the measure of five
quarters of flour and a little more, and it is like the measure of 43 eggs and a fifth of a medium
egg. And this measure is like the measure of five hundred and twenty-eight
dirhams. And this measure is like the measure of two ounces and half an ounce
and half of a half ounce. And this measure is like the measure of five hundred
and twenty-eight dirhams. And this measure is like the measure of two ounces
and half an ounce and half of a half ounce. And this measure is like the measure

For the sake of the unification of the Holy One, Blessed be He, in awe and love, etc., in the name of all Israel
Behold, I am prepared and ready to fulfill the positive commandment of the Sukkah as
the Lord our God commanded us in His holy Torah: In booths you shall dwell
seven days; all who are native-born in Israel shall dwell in booths,
so that your generations may know that I made the children of Israel dwell in booths
when I brought them out of the land of Egypt. And may the pleasantness of
the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; and the work of our hands,
establish it. May it be Your will, Lord my God and God of my fathers,
that Your Presence dwell among us, and spread over us the tabernacle of Your peace,
and surround us with the radiance of Your holy and pure glory, and bestow upon us
an abundance of holiness and purity from the supreme and pure thought,
and merit us to sit in the shadow of the Almighty, in the shadow of Your wings, and may Your eyes be
open upon us and upon all Israel our brothers; and all who are hungry

With the help of Heaven
Let us return to our subject in the name of the Creator, exalted above all and decreed ⟦line⟧
And therefore our Rabbi ruled from the verse "Lest you eat and be satisfied" and houses
For the wicked man in his pride says, "He will not seek [him]"; "There is no God" are all
his thoughts, etc. And the explanation of the verse is that it is the way when
a person comes to bow before the king, and if he finds an open door
before him he enters, and if he finds it closed he returns and says the king
is in his house and does not want to see anyone and it is not fitting for him ⟦line⟧
to wait at his door, for the honor of the king is that they wait for him
on a known and specific day. And so is the matter with one who comes to pray
before Him, blessed be He, and sees that the gates of heaven are closed and his
prayer is not heard; if he returns and says "There is no God," Heaven
forbid, and "He does not want to hear my prayer and does not supervise me,"
and says that everything is by chance, Heaven forbid, behold this is a completely wicked person
and liable for great punishment, for he should have waited until the gate
opens, for the gate is not opened at every time and moment but rather
at known hours. And so the Scripture said: "But as for me, let my prayer be to You,
O Lord, at a time of favor," etc. And so the Scripture said: "Seek the Lord while He may be found ⟦line⟧
call upon Him while He is near," etc. And this is the explanation of the verse
mentioned above: "The wicked man in his pride says, 'He will not seek,'" etc. ⟦line⟧
And its explanation is when the wicked man comes to pray before the Creator, blessed be He,
and does not find an answer suddenly, he says that the Creator does not
supervise him, Heaven forbid. And this is what the Scripture said: "There is no God [in] all
his thoughts," meaning all his thoughts are that there is no God, Heaven forbid.
But the righteous man is not so; rather the Scripture said: "I wait for the Lord, my soul
waits, and in His word I hope," etc. And the Scripture said: "Hope in the Lord;
be strong and let your heart take courage, and hope in the Lord," etc. And so the Scripture said:
"Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters, as the eyes of a maid to the hand
of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, until He has mercy on us," etc.
Behold, it said "until He has mercy on us" and did not say one time and that is enough for him,
but rather said "until He has mercy on us." And this is the matter of prayer, that one must
pray always and not despair of mercy at all.
And even if a sharp sword is placed upon a person's neck, let him
not withhold himself from mercy. And so the Scripture said: "Trust in Him at all times,
O people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah," etc.
And the Scripture said: "Trust in the Lord forever, for in Yah, the Lord, is an everlasting Rock."
And the Scripture said: "Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose trust the Lord is ⟦line⟧
And the Scripture said: "Happy is the man who makes the Lord his trust, and does not turn ⟦line⟧
to the proud, and such as turn aside to lies," etc. And so the Scripture said: "Trust
in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding," etc.
For man was created and has no power except what the Creator gave him.

And they shall already be ready and diligent at every hour, and once there shall come
a judge and a person's dignity is with him for every single word
that his mouth opens in those days, and for every word they shall give

a person thinks, they shall give an account for it, for in those days
all his deeds and all his speech and all his thoughts that
he thought in this world will be shown to him, and he will see everything written in a book, and he will see
that not a small or great thing was forgotten, and he will see everything written
in the book, and he will see that everything was written in the book, and every single word
that a person speaks is written in a book, and every thought that
a person thinks is written in a book, and every deed that a person does
is written in a book, and all this will be on the day of the Great Judgment
which is destined to come upon us and upon all Israel, Amen -
the mouth of 28th of Kislev
And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother to the land of
Seir, the field of Edom. And he commanded them, saying, 'Thus shall you say to my lord,
to Esau: Thus says your servant Jacob, "I have sojourned with Laban and stayed until now;
and I have oxen, and donkeys, flocks, and male and female servants; and I have sent to tell
my lord, that I may find favor in your eyes."' And the messengers returned to Jacob,
saying, 'We came to your brother, to Esau, and moreover he is coming to meet you,
and four hundred men are with him.' Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed;
and he divided the people who were with him, and the flocks and the herds and the camels,
into two camps. And he said, 'If Esau comes to the one camp
and strikes it, then the camp which is left shall escape.' And Jacob said,
'O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, the Lord who said to me,
"Return to your country and to your kindred, and I will do you good," I am unworthy of all
the mercies and of all the truth which You have shown Your servant; for
with my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two
camps. Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear
him, lest he come and strike me and the mother with the children. And You said,
"I will surely do you good, and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which
cannot be numbered for multitude."' And he lodged there that night, and took from
what came to his hand a present for Esau his brother: two hundred female goats and twenty
male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, thirty milking camels
with their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty
female donkeys and ten foals. And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove
by itself, and said to his servants, 'Pass over before me, and put a space
between drove and drove.' And he commanded the first one, saying, 'When
Esau my brother meets you and asks you, saying, "To whom do you belong, and where
are you going? And whose are these before you?" then you shall say, "They belong to your servant Jacob;

Voice of God, may He be blessed, for the completion of David ⟦from the sons of⟧ Abraham, Abraham
our father to 48 or may He have mercy, may He be blessed, as it is said in the Holy Temple
from the sons of Abraham, for all His words are all truth and justice and there is no
change in them
And one of His words is that what He promised to Abraham our father through
the Covenant between the Pieces, every word that came out of the mouth of the Holy One, Blessed be He
is all truth, it shall not be diminished even by the smallest amount, and what He decreed upon the seed
of Abraham our father, why did He hasten and cancel the decree upon them?
Because the Holy One, Blessed be He, saw that in every generation they stand over them
to destroy them, and the Holy One, Blessed be He, saves them from their hand and cancels the decree from them
as He said to Jacob our father, peace be upon him: "And behold, I am with you and I will guard you in all
wherever you go" etc. and He said further: "And I, behold, My covenant is with you"
for if the deeds are good, and the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great
in the earth, and He was grieved in His heart, and He said: "I will blot out the man whom
I have created from the face of the earth, from man to beast, to creeping things
and to the birds of the sky, for I regret that I have made them." And Noah found favor
in the eyes of the Lord. These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a righteous man, perfect
in his generations; Noah walked with God. And Noah begot three
sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. And the earth was corrupt before
God, and the earth was filled with violence. And God saw the earth,
and behold, it was corrupted, for all flesh had corrupted its way upon the earth.
And God said to Noah: "The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled
with violence because of them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth. Make
for yourself an ark of gopher wood; you shall make the ark with compartments, and cover
it inside and out with pitch."
The story of Abraham our father, peace be upon him
Our Sages of blessed memory said: Abraham our father at fifty years old recognized his Creator
meaning that he was searching in his mind to know who created the world
until Abraham, peace be upon him, came and saw all these deeds of Adam
the first, and of the generation of the Flood, and of the generation of the Dispersion, and he saw
this world going and conducting itself with beauty, and he saw the sun shining by day
and the moon and the stars by night. He said: "Is it possible for a world to be without
a leader? Is it possible for a ship to be without a captain? Is it possible for a palace
to be without a master?" He began searching in his mind to know who is the master
of this palace and who is the leader of this world, until
the Holy One, Blessed be He, came and revealed Himself to him and said to him: "I am the master
of the palace and I am the leader of this world."
A story
Our Sages of blessed memory said: Abraham our father, peace be upon him, was searching in his mind to know who created
the world, and he would say: "Perhaps the sun is the creator and the leader
of the world, for I saw it shining by day for the whole world." And when
night came and the sun set and the moon rose, he said: "Perhaps the moon
is the creator and the leader of the world." And when morning came and the moon
set and the sun rose, he said: "Perhaps the sun is the creator and the leader
of the world." And when he saw the sun setting and the moon rising,
and the moon setting and the sun rising, he said: "Is it possible for a world to be without
a leader? Is it possible for a ship to be without a captain? Is it possible for a palace
to be without a master?" He began searching in his mind to know who
is the master of this palace and who is the leader of this world.

And not in this manner, as it is written in the portion of Vayishlach, 'And Jacob saw'
for the blessing was far from him, and therefore Esau argued and said
'Is he not rightly named?' He comforted him and said to him, 'And I have everything,' and upon this were
all his possessions blessed, and his blessing. And so too from what is written

likewise he blesses. And since all this ⟦was⟧ ⟦illegible⟧

Praise be to God who made us among the free people who were slaves
in the land of Egypt, and Egypt is the Egypt famous for great kings.
And in it was the Nile which waters the lands and waters the many plantations,
as He said in the Book of God: "Is not the kingdom of Egypt mine, and these rivers
flowing beneath me?" So this great kingdom that belonged to this king,
all of it became for God, who is the true King of Kings who does not pass away,
nor perish, nor change. And He is the one who brought us out of that slavery
in which we were in that land which was a great kingdom,
from which no one could exit, but only by the power of the hand of God the Mighty,
who is capable of everything. God said to Moses: "Rise and bring out

With the Help of Heaven
Praise be to God who gave us the Holy Torah which is our life,
as He said: "For it is your life and the length of your days," and by it we live in
this world, in this life and the hereafter. Whoever reads the Torah benefits
from it many benefits and learns from it the good manners which
benefit a person in his life and in his death, and by it the world is
sustained, as He said: "If My covenant be not day and night, the ordinances of heaven and earth
I have not set." And God Almighty gave us this Torah by the hand of Moses
His servant, who is the master of the prophets and the messengers. And God Almighty commanded us
to preserve it and read it always, and we say: Praise be to God who
gave us this Holy Torah, Amen and Amen, Selah —
Peace be upon you, my respected brothers who have attended this
holy gathering, which is a gathering of prayer and supplication to God Almighty,
because God Almighty loves the gathering in which there is
mention of God, mention of His Torah, and mention of the righteous who are
the foundation of the world, as He said: "And the righteous is the foundation of the world." And in this
holy gathering, we mention the memory of the great and famous righteous man
who was among the great righteous ones who were in
the world, and he is the famous righteous man Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, peace be upon him —
On this day, it is the day of his passing, and the day of his passing was a day
of joy and happiness, because he requested from God Almighty that the day of
his passing be a day of joy and happiness for all Israel, because on this day
his holy soul ascended to heaven and he attained a great status
with God in heaven. And on this day, many lights descended
from heaven to the earth. And everyone who reads the Book of the Zohar
which this righteous man authored, benefits from it many lights and benefits
that are very great, because the Book of the Zohar is among the greatest books that
were authored in the world, and through it we know the greatness of God Almighty and the greatness
of His Holy Torah, and through it we know how to love God and how to love
our brothers of Israel, and how to be among the righteous whom God
Almighty loves. And on this day, we ask of God Almighty, by the merit of this
righteous man, to protect us and protect all Israel from every evil and from every
calamity, and to give us health and wellness, and to bless our livelihoods,
and to gladden our hearts, and to make us among the happy ones in this world
and the hereafter, Amen and Amen, Selah —

To the Chief Musician, upon Nehiloth, a Psalm of David. Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my meditation.
Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray. O Lord, in the morning
shalt thou hear my voice; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up. For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness:
neither shall evil dwell with thee. The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest
all workers of iniquity. Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing: the Lord will abhor
the bloody and deceitful man. But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward
thy holy temple. Lead me, O Lord, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight
before my face. For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre;
they flatter with their tongue. Destroy thou them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels;
cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against thee. But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice:
let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee. For thou,
Lord, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.
To the Chief Musician on Neginoth upon Sheminith, a Psalm of David. O Lord, rebuke me not in thine anger,
neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. Have mercy upon me, O Lord; for I am weak: heal me,
O Lord; for my bones are vexed. My soul is also sore vexed: but thou, O Lord, how long?
Return, O Lord, deliver my soul: oh save me for thy mercies' sake. For in death there is no
remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks? I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I
my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears. Mine eye is consumed because of grief; it waxeth old
because of all mine enemies. Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity; for the Lord hath heard the voice of
my weeping. The Lord hath heard my supplication; the Lord will receive my prayer. Let all mine enemies be ashamed and sore vexed:
let them return and be ashamed suddenly.
Shiggaion of David, which he sang unto the Lord, concerning the words of Cush the Benjamite. O Lord my God,
in thee do I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me: Lest he tear my soul like a lion,
rending it in pieces, while there is none to deliver. O Lord my God, if I have done this; if there be
iniquity in my hands; If I have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with me; (yea, I have delivered him that without cause is mine enemy:)
Let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it; yea, let him tread down my life upon the earth, and lay mine honour
in the dust. Selah. Arise, O Lord, in thine anger, lift up thyself because of the rage of mine enemies: and awake
for me to the judgment that thou hast commanded. So shall the congregation of the people compass thee about: for their sakes therefore return
thou on high. The Lord shall judge the people: judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness, and according to mine integrity that is in me. Oh let
the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins.
My defence is of God, which saveth the upright in heart. God judgeth the righteous,
and God is angry with the wicked every day. If he turn not, he will whet his sword; he hath bent his bow,
and made it ready. He hath also prepared for him the instruments of death; he ordaineth his arrows against the persecutors.
Behold, he travaileth with iniquity, and hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood. He made a pit, and digged it,
and is fallen into the ditch which he made. His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down
upon his own pate. I will praise the Lord according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the Lord most high.
To the Chief Musician upon Gittith, a Psalm of David. O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name
in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings
hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger. When I consider
thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man,
that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels,
and hast crowned him with glory and honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put
all things under his feet: All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; The fowl of
the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas. O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name
in all the earth!

And these are the names of the sons
For they are sold as a slave's sale, for they are My servants whom I brought out
from the land of Egypt; they shall not be sold as a slave's sale. You shall not rule over him with rigor,
and you shall fear your God. For you were sold for nothing, and you shall not be redeemed with money. And if
your brother, a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, is sold to you, he shall serve you six years,
and in the seventh year you shall let him go free from you. And when you send him out free from you,
you shall not send him away empty-handed. You shall furnish him liberally from your flock, from your threshing floor, and from your winepress;
as the Lord your God has blessed you, you shall give to him. And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land
of Egypt, and the Lord your God redeemed you; therefore I command you this thing
today. And it shall be, if he says to you, 'I will not go away from you,' because he loves you
6 Rabbi Yochanan said: Anyone who appoints a judge who is not fit is as if he planted an Asherah
Or it was stated: One who appoints a judge who is not worthy is as if he planted an Asherah
beside the altar of the Lord, as it is said: 'You shall not plant for yourself an Asherah, any tree, near
the altar of the Lord your God.' And in a place where there are disciples of the wise, it is as if he planted an Asherah -
Rav Hisda said: What is written, 'You shall not make with Me gods of silver,
and gods of gold you shall not make for yourselves'? Gods of silver - these are judges who come
by the power of silver; and gods of gold - these are judges who come by the power of gold. (Sanhedrin 7b)
Any judge who takes a bribe and perverts the judgment does not die of old age until
his eyes grow dim, as it is said: 'For a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise,' etc. (Peah 8:9)
And these are the names of the sons
And as for me, when I came from Padan-aram, Rachel died to my sorrow in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was still
some distance to go to Ephrath; and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath, which is Beth-
lehem. And Jacob set up a pillar on her grave; that is the pillar of Rachel's grave
to this day. And Israel journeyed and pitched his tent beyond Migdal-eder. And it came to pass,
while Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine;
and Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve: the sons of Leah,
Jacob's firstborn, Reuben, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Zebulun;
the sons of Rachel, Joseph and Benjamin; and the sons of Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid, Dan and Naphtali;
and the sons of Zilpah, Leah's handmaid, Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob who
were born to him in Padan-aram.
And the Lord called to Moses and spoke
to the children of Israel and said to them: When any man of you brings an offering
to the Lord, you shall bring your offering of the livestock, of the herd and of the flock.
If his offering is a burnt sacrifice of the herd, he shall offer a male without blemish; he shall offer it at the door
of the tabernacle of meeting . . . And he shall put his hand on the head of the burnt offering,
and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him . . . And he shall kill the bull before the Lord;
and the priests, Aaron's sons, shall bring the blood and sprinkle the blood on
the altar all around, which is by the door of the tabernacle of meeting.

It is [full] and not deficient, and it was already appropriate according to this
And there was a dispute in these places because God made
unifications and changes of places, and from them followed a tendency
as is the custom of other deficient [forms], and in this is their reasoning, and this
served as proof for him according to what he wrote in the book Mishkan
And there is no place here to elaborate on this, [furthermore] 'Happy is he' etc.
just as all that he retracted, and this is where it is deficient
like 'Adam to him' and likewise 'and a sign for a sign' for the word 'to him'
but he said 'and a sign for a sign' for the word 'to him' is deficient

of these the word 'to him' is deficient because the word 'to him' is deficient
this is appropriate for the word deficient, and he wrote [furthermore] he said

Parashat Vayechi Keter
And it was when you asked me, my masters, my masters, the honorable and beloved congregation
regarding the question of man, saying that we shall not forget what we saw
with our own eyes only a few days ago, and we were eyewitnesses -
and that Torah crown that was in the Gurji synagogue, from which was stolen
the golden headplate and precious pearls upon it, it was stolen on the Holy Sabbath
and after a search it was not found, and the sorrow and the grief of soul were like a heartache
over the loss of the pearls which are the property of the public and the community, and although
there was fear upon us lest the gentiles and the government say that we stole [it] -
and behold, suddenly on Sunday after two weeks they were found in a
certain box near the gate of the synagogue, and all the people saw and rejoiced
this is your question, my masters, and my desire in this is to explain to you what this is
as it is said: Ask your father and he will tell you, your elders and they will say to you. Indeed, listen -
Behold, a person at the time he steals something and fears lest he be caught (even a wicked man
who does not fear the Lord of Heaven) but out of fear of the government and the law will return
the theft to its place, and this is perhaps the intention of the thief who recanted
An incident that happened in these days of ours in the glorious Baghdad, for a
certain man entered the synagogue and saw a Torah crown placed there and in it
vessels of gold and precious stones; he said in his heart, I will take one pearl
and sell it and he will have much money, and indeed he took [it] and fled from the synagogue
for he knew that no one sees, and he thought that no one sees in heaven as the
scripture says: and he says in his heart there is no God, G-d forbid. And behold, after
a short while that man was caught by a policeman for some
other offense and was brought to the prison, and there the policeman saw
in his pocket the precious stone and asked him: from where do you have this? And he
feared lest they say he stole it from the king's house, and he told him
the truth, that he took it from the synagogue of the Jews
and behold, that policeman was God-fearing and said to him
return the theft to its place lest evil and bitterness come upon you
and that man was afraid and returned the stone to the synagogue -
in secret and at night, and it was a wonder in the eyes of the congregation and the sages -
you asked what the meaning of this matter is and how this matter unfolded
behold, several reasons can be said for this, but the foundation of the matter -
is that the Lord desires for the sake of His righteousness to magnify the Torah and make it glorious
for even the gentiles will see that there is a God in Israel, and anyone who steals
from the house of the Lord, his end is to be caught and he will be for contempt and disgrace
and may it be the will before Him, may He be blessed, that He redeem us speedily
