Le repas à la ferme.
Le repas du soir réunissait tout le monde. Chacun se plaçait à sa guise le long de la table, et la fermière remplissait les assiettes jusqu'au bord. Les jeunes mordaient à pleines dents dans leur pain, tandis que les vieux coupaient précieusement chaque bouchée. Tous mangeaient en silence, et le pain paraissait plus blanc dans leurs mains noires.
A la fin du repas, les plus âgés parlaient des travaux des champs et des récoltes, les jeunes causaient et riaient avec Martine, la bergère. C'était elle qui donnait le pain et versait à boire. Elle répondait toujours en riant. On aimait bien la gracieuse bergère.
