Reference to your letter No. 9042 dated September 16, 946, and following our letter No. 1023
dated 9/23/946.
We inform you that the betrothal took place between Juliet Yusuf Hayyim Soffer and Ibrahim Ezra Soffer without the presence of
the contract registrar; the contract was then registered on February 26, 702, corresponding to 2/13/942. After a period had passed
following that, the aforementioned fiancé entered into another betrothal with the girl named Beherta Ezra Yaqoub Hay on March 17, 706
corresponding to 2/18/946, without the Rabbi who performed it being aware of the first betrothal.
The current custom and tradition prevent a fiancé from conducting a second betrothal without the consent of the first
fiancée or by authorization from the Religious Court.
Accordingly, this court has previously issued a ruling requiring the aforementioned fiancé
to pay (700) seven hundred Dinars as compensation to the first fiancée should he wish to divorce her and marry the second
fiancée.
