EXPLANATION OF GRADES
PASSING GRADES
A, passed with honor.
B, passed with credit.
C, passed.
D, barely passed.
FAILING GRADES
E, conditioned. Student is entitled to a re-examination (except in drawing or laboratory subjects) because, in the opinion of the instructor, a comprehensive review of the subject should enable him to pass it. This must be taken at the next condition examination period or the right to such examination is forfeited.
Condition Examinations will be held during the examination period in September for second-term subjects, in October for summer-session subjects, and in March for first-term subjects. A schedule together with an application card, will be mailed to each student having an E or OX. If the examination schedule and application card are not received by three weeks after the final examination period in which an E or OX was received, the student should call at or write to Schedules Office, Room 7-142, as the application card must be returned by the specified date or the right to the examination will be forfeited.
If a student registers for a subject in which a grade of E has been received, he may not take the Condition Examination. If a grade of F is received in a Condition Examination the student may not register for that subject in the same term.
A grade of E in a drawing or laboratory subject (except in 2.722) allows the student to complete the work in accordance with the regulations printed under I, incomplete, below. A grade of E in 2.722 entitles the student to a Condition Examination.
F, failed completely. Signifies that the student must repeat the subject to receive credit, and he will not be allowed to take subjects depend- ing thereon unless he has previously had an E in the subject.
OTHER GRADES
J, grade in same subject in a later term also covers this term.
N, subject passed, but formal grade is not assigned.
I, incomplete. Signifies the work required has not been completed.
I, in lecture or recitation subjects: Work must be completed not later than the end of the fifth week of the succeeding term of the regular academic year.
I or E, in drawing and in the Electrical Engineering Laboratory subjects: Work must be completed not later than the end of the academic term succeeding the one in which it was received.
I or E, in laboratory work, except the Electrical Engineering Laboratory subjects: Work must be completed within one year from the date incurred.
The student should not register for the subject except in the Summer Session, if he is completing that subject within the time limit stated above. If the work is not completed within the time specified above, the student must register for and repeat the subject in order to receive credit.
IX, incomplete satisfactorily explained to the Dean of Students. Student is entitled to clear the subject as specified under I, incomplete, above.
O, absent. It is equivalent to a grade of F. Absence should be explained to the Dean of Students immediately.
OX, absence satisfactorily explained to the Dean of Students. Student is entitled to clear the subject as specified under E, conditioned, above.
SA, satisfactory. (Doctor's Thesis, only)
S, credited on basis of work done elsewhere.

ADVISOR'S INFORMAL COMMENT ON: Rony Elia-Shaoul
(STUDENT'S NAME):
Rony has become very friendly with a number of his countrymen
who are upperclassmen here at M.I.T. and who have been able to help
him over the hurdles of the first term. Therefore, my contacts with
him have been quite limited and have been essentially only those
formal contacts which are required. He has impressed me as a very
capable boy whose performance here should continue to be as good
as it was during his first term.

Notes
This document contains information which is sent out in advance of the issue of Certificates, and while every effort has been
made to ensure that the contents are accurate, the University reserves the right to make corrections. It is not a Certificate,
and must not be regarded as such.
The results overleaf are indicated by grades which are to be interpreted as follows:
Grade |
1 | Advanced level Pass with Distinction
2 |
3 |
4 | Advanced level Passes
5 |
6 |
7 | Ordinary level Passes
8 |
9 | Failure
(The Grades 1 to 9 are in descending order of merit)
An O in the Grade column indicates that a candidate was entered for the subject but has been marked 'ABSENT'.
In French, German, Spanish, Italian and Russian, two grades will appear (e.g. 5 4). The first represents the grade obtained in the subject as a whole
including the oral test and the second the result for the oral test on its own.
In Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Biology and Geology, two grades will appear (e.g. 6 6). The first represents the grade obtained in the subject as
a whole including the practical test, and the second the grade for the practical test on its own.
If a candidate has failed in a subject because of poor English or inferior presentation of the work a separate notification to this effect will be sent.
No further information about performance in the examination will be supplied by the University. The decisions of the Examiners, which have been
reached after the most careful consideration, are final.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS GOVERNING THE AWARD OF CERTIFICATES IN CERTAIN AREAS
Private Candidates sitting for the examination in Aden, Argentina, Hong Kong, Kenya, Mauritius, Somali Republic and Zanzibar are required to pass in a
prescribed minimum number of subjects in order to qualify for the award of a certificate. If you are one of these candidates and have not qualified for a
certificate the word 'FAILED' will appear in the space immediately below your Candidate Number. If there is nothing in the space it indicates that you
have qualified for a certificate. If, however, you possess one of the necessary exempting qualifications and are eligible for a certificate in respect of any
subjects passed, the word 'FAILED' will not appear even if you have not passed in any subjects.
Certificates
Certificates for successful candidates will be sent to the Overseas Authority for distribution as soon as possible after the publication of these results.
Candidates who have passed in subjects at both levels will receive two certificates, one for Ordinary level subjects and another for Advanced.

In addition to the above, Mr. Rony-Reuben Victor Elia Shaoul will be sitting in June 1961 for the London University G.C.E. Examinations in French Language at the ordinary level and in Pure Mathematics at the advanced level.
Prior to his joining Frank Iny Intermediate School in October 1956, the above candidate did six years of primary schooling at Menahem Daniel Primary School which is known to be one of the good schools in Baghdad.
While in Frank Iny School and Shamash Secondary School, both of which are under the same administration, the above candidate distinguished himself as a brilliant student of very good character. On more than one occasion during the different stages of his studies in these two Schools, he won School Prizes for excellence in his academic work.
At present Mr. Rony-Reuben Victor Elia Shaoul is attending the Fifth Form of Shamash Secondary School and is doing extremely well. In June 1961 he will be sitting the Iraq State Baccalaureate Examination for Secondary Education, Scientific Section. To judge by his Secondary School Record, he should be able to pass this Examination with distinction in due course. He will then be eligible for entry into any higher Institute of University standard in Iraq.
Mr. Rony-Reuben Victor Elia Shaoul is physically and mentally quite fit. I recommend his for admission to any University abroad as an excellent candidate.
