EXPLANATION OF GRADES
PASSING GRADES
A, passed with honor. C, passed.
B, passed with credit. D, barely passed.
FAILING GRADES
E, conditioned. Student is entitled to a re-examination (except in drawing or laboratory subjects) because, in the opinion of the instructor, a comprehensive review of the subject should enable him to pass it. This must be taken at the next condition examination period or the right to such examination is forfeited.
Condition Examinations will be held during the examination period in September for second-term subjects, in October for summer-session subjects, and in March for first-term subjects. A schedule, together with an application card, will be mailed to each student having an E or OX. If the examination schedule and application card are not received by three weeks after the final examination period in which an E or OX was received, the student should call at or write to Schedules Office, Room 7-142, as the application card must be returned by the specified date or the right to the examination will be forfeited.
If a student registers for a subject in which a grade of E has been received, he may not take the Condition Examination. If a grade of F is received in a Condition Examination the student may not register for that subject in the same term.
A grade of E in a drawing or laboratory subject (except in 2.722) allows the student to complete the work in accordance with the regulations printed under I, incomplete, below. A grade of E in 2.722 entitles the student to a Condition Examination.
F, failed completely. Signifies that the student must repeat the subject to receive credit, and he will not be allowed to take subjects depending thereon unless he has previously had an E in the subject.
OTHER GRADES
J, grade in same subject in a later term also covers this term.
N, subject passed, but formal grade is not assigned.
I, Incomplete. Signifies the work required has not been completed.
I, in lecture or recitation subjects. Work must be completed not later than the end of the fifth week of the succeeding term of the regular academic year.
I or E, in drawing and in the Electrical Engineering Laboratory subjects. Work must be completed not later than the end of the academic term succeeding the one in which it was received.
I or E, in laboratory work, except the Electrical Engineering Laboratory subjects. Work must be completed within one year from the date incurred.
The student should not register for the subject, except in the Summer Session, if he is completing that subject within the time limit stated above. If the work is not completed within the time specified above, the student must register for and repeat the subject in order to receive credit.
IX, incomplete satisfactorily explained to the Dean of Students. Student is entitled to clear the subject as specified under I, incomplete, above.
O, absent. It is equivalent to a grade of F. Absence should be explained to the Dean of Students immediately.
OX, absence satisfactorily explained to the Dean of Students. Student is entitled to clear the subject as specified under E, conditioned, above.
SA, satisfactory. (Doctor's Thesis only)

Dear Sirs,
I am a student in Shamash Secondary School, Baghdad, Iraq.
In June 1960, I finished the fourth Form of this School and was promo-
ted to the Fifth Form. At present I am attending the fifth Form which,
in standard, is equivalent roughly to Grade Twelve of the American
High School.
In addition, I sat for the General Certificate of Education
examination (G.C.E.) of the University of London and passed at the
level indicated in the following five subjects :
Grade obtained | Subject | Level | Date
7 | Classical Arabic (Arabic was originally sat at (A) level) | Ordinary | June 1960
4 | English Language | Ordinary | June 1960
2 | Pure Mathematics | Ordinary | June 1960
5 | Physics | Ordinary | June 1960
4 | Chemistry | Ordinary | June 1960
In January 1961, I sat for the London University G.C.E.
examinations in French Language at the Ordinary Level, and in June
1961 in Pure Mathematics at the Advanced Level.
On October 18th, 1960, I sat for the P.S.A.T. Exam. given
by the College Entrance Examination Board for Box 592, Princeton, New
Jersey, U.S.A., through their examination Centre in Baghdad. On March
18th, 1961, I shall be taking the Scholastic Aptitude Test and the
Achievement Tests, which are given by the same Board, in the three
following subjects - Advanced Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
In June 1961, I shall be sitting for the Iraq State Bacca-
laureate Examination for Secondary Education, Scientific Section,
which I am confident of passing with distinction in due course.
I am very much interested in joining your College to read
for B.Sc. Degree in Electrical Engineering. I would like, therefore,
to apply from now for admission to your College for the session commen-
cing September 1961.
I shall be much obliged if you will send me the necessary
application Forms as soon as possible.
Thanking you in anticipation and hoping to hear from you
soon,

I am enclosing herewith a School report containing full particulars about the Secondary School record of Mr. Rony-Reuben Victor Elia Shaoul, who is a student in the graduating class of my School, and who had applied for admission to your Institute for the session commencing September 1961.
I add that the above candidate is quite fit for work in a University of the highest standing. His character is very good. He is very industrious and is quite mature for his age. He is self confident and quite independent in his work. He is a promising lad, quite reliable with a sense of responsibility.
