Notes
This document contains information which is sent out in advance of the issue of Certificates, and while every effort has been
made to ensure that the contents are accurate, the University reserves the right to make corrections. It is not a Certificate,
and must not be regarded as such.
The results overleaf are indicated by grades which are to be interpreted as follows:
Grade
1 Advanced level Pass with Distinction
2 }
3 }
4 } Advanced level Passes
5 }
6 }
7 } Ordinary level Passes
8 }
9 Failure
(The Grades 1 to 9 are in descending order of merit)
An O in the Grade column indicates that a candidate was entered for the subject but has been marked 'ABSENT'.
In French, German, Spanish, Italian and Russian, two grades will appear (e.g. 5 4). The first represents the grade obtained in the subject as a whole
including the oral test and the second the result for the oral test on its own.
In Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Biology and Geology, two grades will appear (e.g. 6 6). The first represents the grade obtained in the subject as
a whole including the practical test, and the second the grade for the practical test on its own.
If a candidate has failed in a subject because of poor English or inferior presentation of the work a separate notification to this effect will be sent.
No further information about performance in the examination will be supplied by the University. The decisions of the Examiners, which have been
reached after the most careful consideration, are final.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS GOVERNING THE AWARD OF CERTIFICATES IN CERTAIN AREAS
Private Candidates sitting for the examination in Aden, Argentina, Hong Kong, Kenya, Mauritius, Somali Republic and Zanzibar are required to pass in a
prescribed minimum number of subjects in order to qualify for the award of a certificate. If you are one of these candidates and have not qualified for a
certificate the word 'FAILED' will appear in the space immediately below your Candidate Number. If there is nothing in the space it indicates that you
⟦have⟧ qualified for a certificate. If, however, you possess one of the necessary exempting qualifications and are eligible for a certificate in respect of any
subjects passed, the word 'FAILED' will not appear even if you have not passed in any subjects.
Certificates
Certificates for successful candidates will be sent to the Overseas Authority for distribution as soon as possible after the publication of these results.
Candidates who have passed in subjects at both levels will receive two certificates, one for Ordinary level subjects and another for Advanced.

Dr. M. H. Shulman,
70 Marshall Street,
Brookline, 46 Massachusetts,
U. S. A.
Dear Dr. Shulman,
Many thanks for your letter of 11th October 1960, regarding Fred Chitayat. I am glad to hear from you about his work and progress at the M.I.T.
This year, I am able to nominate three students of the graduating class of Shamash Secondary School for studying in Universities in the U.S.A. They are:
1. Sammy Gourgi Shina
2. Rony-Reuben Victor Elia-Shaoul
3. Jack Salem Shamoun
I have already arranged for these three boys to sit in March 1961, the Scholastic Aptitude Test and the Achievement Tests, given by the College Entrance Examination Board of Princeton, New Jersey. I am also arranging for them to apply from now for admission, for the session of September 1961, to different Universities in the U.S.A., including the M.I.T., Columbia University, New York University and others.
However, two of the above candidates, namely, Sammy Gourgi Shina and Jack Salem Shamoun, can afford, as far as I am aware to study on their own and to pay all expenses necessary for their College Education in the U.S.A. The second candidate, namely, Rony-Reuben Victor Elia-Shaoul, cannot possibly pay the full expenses and will therefore be seeking financial aid through your group. Personally, I believe that this boy will make a successful student in any university in the U.S.A., no matter how high of standing the university might be, and I therefore recommend him as a suitable candidate. I hope that it will be possible for you to secure for this boy the financial aid necessary for his higher education in the U.S.A. for a period of at least four years.
Rony's parents are understood to be able to pay for his travelling expenses to the U.S.A. in case he will be favourably considered for a Scholarship award. In addition they will undertake to contribute a maximum of one thousand Dollars yearly towards his college expenses over the next four years.
I am enclosing, herewith, a letter of reference and recommendation with transcripts of Rony's secondary School records. I hope to hear from you soon on the subject of a scholarship award for this boy, in order to help him secure, in due time, the necessary admission to a university in the U.S.A. for the academic year commencing September 1961.
With my best wishes to you and to your family for a very happy and a prosperous New Year.
Sincerely yours,
A.S. OBADIAH,
Supervising Principal.
