Dr. M. H. Shulman,
70 Marshall Street,
Brookline, 46 Massachusetts,
U. S. A.
B04 · paragraph / latin
Dear Dr. Shulman,
Many thanks for your letter of 11th October 1960, regarding Fred
Chitayat. I am glad to hear from you about his work and progress at the M.I.T.
B05 · paragraph / latin
This year, I am able to nominate three students of the graduating
class of Shamash Secondary School for studying in Universities in the U.S.A.
They are:
B06 · table / latin
1. | Sammy Gourgi Shina
2. | Rony-Reuben Victor Elia-Shaoul
3. | Jack Salem Shamoun
B07 · paragraph / latin
I have already arranged for these three boys to sit in March 1961,
the Scholastic Aptitude Test and the Achievement Tests, given by the College
Entrance Examination Board of Princeton, New Jersey. I am also arranging for
them to apply from now for admission, for the session of September 1961, to
different Universities in the U.S.A., including the M.I.T., Columbia Univer-
sity, New York University and others.
B08 · paragraph / latin
However, two of the above candidates, namely, Sammy Gourgi Shina
and Jack Salem Shamoun, can afford, as far as I am aware to study on their
own and to pay all expenses necessary for their College Education in the
U.S.A. The second candidate, namely, Rony-Reuben Victor Elia-Shaoul,
cannot possibly pay the full expenses and will therefore be seeking financial
aid through your group. Personally, I believe that this boy will make a success-
ful student in any university in the U.S.A., no matter how high of standing the
university might be, and I therefore recommend him as a suitable candidate. I
hope that it will be possible for you to secure for this boy the financial aid
necessary for his higher education in the U.S.A. for a period of at least four
years.
B09 · paragraph / latin
Rony's parents are understood to be able to pay for his travelling
expenses to the U.S.A. in case he will be favourably considered for a Scholar-
ship award. In addition they will undertake to contribute a maximum of one
thousand Dollars yearly towards his college expenses over the next four years.
B10 · paragraph / latin
I am enclosing, herewith, a letter of reference and recommendation
with transcripts of Rony's secondary School records. I hope to hear from you
soon on the subject of a scholarship award for this boy, in order to help him
secure, in due time, the necessary admission to a university in the U.S.A. for
the academic year commencing September 1961.
B11 · paragraph / latin
With my best wishes to you and to your family for a very happy and
a prosperous New Year.
B12 · signature / latin
Sincerely yours,
A.S. OBADIAH,
Supervising Principal.

PASSING GRADES
A, passed with honor. C, passed.
B, passed with credit. D, barely passed.
B03 · paragraph / latin
FAILING GRADES
E, conditioned. Student is entitled to a re-examination (except in drawing or laboratory subjects) because, in the opinion of the instructor, a comprehensive review of the subject should enable him to pass it. This must be taken at the next condition examination period or the right to such examination is forfeited.
Condition Examinations will be held during the examination period in September for second-term subjects, in October for summer-session subjects, and in March for first-term subjects. A schedule together with an application card, will be mailed to each student having an E or OX. If the examination schedule and application card are not received by three weeks after the final examination period in which an E or OX was received, the student should call at or write to Schedules Office, Room 7-142, as the application card must be returned by the specified date or the right to the examination will be forfeited.
If a student registers for a subject in which a grade of E has been received, he may not take the Condition Examination. If a grade of F is received in a Condition Examination the student may not register for that subject in the same term.
A grade of E in a drawing or laboratory subject (except in 2.722) allows the student to complete the work in accordance with the regulations printed under I, incomplete, below. A grade of E in 2.722 entitles the student to a Condition Examination.
F, failed completely. Signifies that the student must repeat the subject to receive credit, and he will not be allowed to take subjects depend- ing thereon unless he has previously had an E in the subject.
B04 · paragraph / latin
OTHER GRADES

ADVISOR'S INFORMAL COMMENT ON: Sammy Gourgy Shina
(STUDENT'S NAME):
B03 · paragraph / latin
Mr. Shina seems to have
successfully adjusted himself to his
surroundings at M.I.T. He appears
to be a hard worker and a capable
boy. He does, though, seem to place
more than the normal emphasis on
grades. We hope to inspire him to
see learning as its own end and to
select courses from
this broader
viewpoint.
