Handwritten Passover Hagadah

View interactive document page

Description

This is a handwritten book, likely written by a youth (likely Baghdadi) in 5603 (1902 or 1903). In the front, it is inscribed with the Hebrew date, and the assumed scribe: Ha-Tseir Katsuri ben Shaul Yaʻaḳov Yehudah Yaʻaḳov. Inside is the entire Passover Hagadah with small illustrations and decorations, as well as other prayers and poems from other parts of Jewish liturgy: Lekhah Dodi and Yedid Nefesh from Sabbath Evening prayers. The text of the Hagadah includes a paragraph-by-paragraph translation of the Hebrew text to Judeo-Arabic.

Strong Chorus
⟦12⟧ S Shelomo H
Lowly of spirit, lowly of knee and stature : I advance toward You
To bless : dread and terror : " " " " " " "
Before You : I am considered in my eyes " like a worm
: small in the earth : " " " " " " "
Full of the world, who has no end to His greatness :
: How shall a wise man praise You and with what : " " " " "
Glorious One, the angels of high cannot contain Him " and how
: much more so I : " " " " "
You have returned and magnified Your kindness, You shall magnify
: every soul to give thanks :

Beloved of the soul, Compassionate Father: draw Your servant to Your will
O beloved of the soul, O Compassionate Father: draw Your servant to Your desire
Your servant will run like a hart: he will prostrate himself before Your majesty because
Your servant will run like a gazelle: he will prostrate before Your beauty because
Your friendship will be sweeter to him: than dripping honeycomb and every taste : : : : :
Your friendship will be good to her: than the juice of the bee and every taste : : : : :
Resplendent, beautiful, radiance of the world: my soul is sick with Your love
O radiant, O beautiful, O light of the world: my soul is sick from Your love
Please, O God, please heal her: by showing her the pleasantness of Your radiance
O God, heal her: by showing her the sweetness of Your light
Ancient One, may Your mercies be stirred, and please have pity on the son of
Your beloved, for (who is this) this is how long I have yearned
longed to see the glory of Your strength
Please, my God, my heart's desire, and please have pity and do not
hide Yourself; please reveal Yourself and spread, O Beloved, over me

There you shall be blessed in the world of Torah: He brought me to the banqueting house
And his banner: and his banner over me was love: Sustain me with flagons
Stay me with apples: for I am sick with love
The myrtle hints at the three patriarchs: His left hand is under my head
And his right: and what is His left hand under my head: and His right hand shall embrace me
I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem: by the gazelles, or by the hinds
Of the field: that ye awaken not, nor stir up love, until it please
The voice of my beloved! behold, he cometh: leaping upon the mountains, skipping
Upon the hills: My beloved is like a gazelle or a young hart
Behold, he standeth behind our wall: he looketh in through the windows
He peereth through the lattice: My beloved spoke, and said unto me: Rise up
My love, my fair one, and come away
And said

And men of faith have been lost, those who come with the power
of their deeds ⟦line⟧
Mighty ones to stand in the breach, repelling
the decrees ⟦line⟧
They were a wall and a shelter for us in the day of wrath
Extinguishing anger with their whisper ⟦line⟧
They halted fury with their prayer, before they called You
You answered them ⟦line⟧
They knew how to entreat and to appease, as a father You pitied
for their sake ⟦line⟧
You did not turn them away empty-handed; from the multitude
of our sins we have lost them ⟦line⟧
They were taken from us due to our sins, they have departed
to their rest ⟦line⟧
They left us to sighing, the menders of the
fence have ceased ⟦line⟧
Those who turn back wrath have been cut off, those who rise in the breach
are no more ⟦line⟧
Those worthy of appeasing You are gone, we have wandered
to the four corners ⟦line⟧
A remedy we did not find, we returned to You
with shame on our faces ⟦line⟧

This is my God, and I will glorify Him; my father's God, and I will exalt Him
This is my God and I will thank Him: the God of my father and I will magnify Him
Before his beloved he runs: like a giant he runs the path:
Before his beloved he runs: like the giant he runs the path:
Sweetness will be sweet to him: and with the meal offering:
The sweetness will be pleasant to him: and with the sacrifice of the meal offering:
Time will be present for him: and on the paths of providence:
The time will be before him: and on the path of observation:
The sanctuary will be and it shone: in his light his heirs will shine:
The sanctuary will be shining: and for his light his heirs will shine:
And at the head

Of David: Blessed be the Lord my Rock: who trains my hands for battle: my fingers for war
⟦line⟧ Happy is the people ⟦line⟧
Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous: praise is comely for the upright:
Give thanks to the Lord with the harp: sing praises to Him with the ten-stringed lute: sing to Him
A new song: play skillfully with a shout of joy: for the word of the Lord is right
And all His works are done in faithfulness
⟦line⟧ A Psalm or Song for the Sabbath day ⟦line⟧
It is a good thing to give thanks to the Lord: and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High: to declare
Your lovingkindness in the morning: and Your faithfulness every night: upon a ten-stringed instrument and upon the lute:
Upon the solemn sound with the harp: for You, Lord, have made me glad through Your work: in the works of Your hands
⟦line⟧ I will triumph ⟦line⟧

In Arabic
Come, O my friends: let us go down to welcome the bride:
She is the Sabbath: Welcome to the Sabbath which is
the bride: The face of God is in its acceptance, so let us welcome
and honor her so that she may be in our hearts: The head
of the year is the Sabbath:
Sevenfold as well is the wealth of the bride: we welcome her in it
and bring her into our home: so that she may be in our hearts and we may be worthy
and thus we celebrate her in the place where we dwell:
A pleasant scent is in it: the day the heavens and the earth and all their hosts were completed
after God finished: and ceased from every detail in it we shall rest
and be satisfied and be renewed in its splendor over a world that is all
Sabbath
They shall thank
