View interactive document page

Description

This is a handwritten book, likely written by a youth (likely Baghdadi) in 5603 (1902 or 1903). In the front, it is inscribed with the Hebrew date, and the assumed scribe: Ha-Tseir Katsuri ben Shaul Yaʻaḳov Yehudah Yaʻaḳov. Inside is the entire Passover Hagadah with small illustrations and decorations, as well as other prayers and poems from other parts of Jewish liturgy: Lekhah Dodi and Yedid Nefesh from Sabbath Evening prayers. The text of the Hagadah includes a paragraph-by-paragraph translation of the Hebrew text to Judeo-Arabic.

We rejoiced above
When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language ..
Judah became His sanctuary, Israel His dominion ..
The sea saw it and fled, the Jordan turned back .. The mountains skipped like rams, the hills
like lambs .. What ails you, O sea, that you flee, O Jordan, that you turn back .. O mountains,
that you skip like rams, O hills, like lambs .. At the presence of the Lord, tremble, O earth, at the presence
of the God of Jacob .. Who turned the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a fountain of water ..
In the going out of Israel from Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people
of strangers .. Judah was for His holiness, Israel
His wisdom .. The sea looked and fled, the Jordan returns backwards .. The mountains
danced like rams, the hills like the young of the sheep .. What ails you, O sea, that
you flee

which was eaten when satisfied, and one does not drink after it.

And with an outstretched arm: this is the drawn sword of David
as it is said: "with his sword drawn in his hand, outstretched over Jerusalem."
And with great awe: and this is the great fear; this is the revelation of the Shekhinah,
as it is said: "Has God ever attempted to go and take for Himself a nation from the midst of
another nation, by trials, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand,
and by an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all that
the Lord your God did for you in Egypt
before your eyes?"
And with signs:
this is the staff,
as it is said: "And you shall take this staff in your hand, with which
you shall perform the signs." And with wonders: and these are the miracles,
this is the blood, as it is said: "And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth,
blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke."

And please do not make us dependent, O Lord our God, upon the gifts of flesh and blood nor upon their loans...
for their gift is small and their shame is great, but rather upon Your hand which is full and wide,
rich and open, so that we shall not be ashamed in this world... nor disgraced in the world to come

The Merciful One
He shall revive us and grant us merit for the years of
the days of the Messiah and for the life of the World to Come
The Merciful One shall magnify the salvations of His king and do kindness for His anointed, for David and his seed
forever " Young lions have suffered want and hunger, but those who seek Hashem shall not lack any good "
I was young and I have also grown old, and I have not seen a righteous man forsaken and his seed seeking bread "
All day long he is gracious and lends, and his seed is for a blessing " What we asked of You
You shall delight " and for what we asked, let it be fulfilled " and for what we asked, let us be
for a blessing, as it is written " And it shall be that before they call, I will answer; while they are yet
speaking, I will hear " Blessed is He who gives bread to all flesh, for
His kindness is forever " Give thanks to Hashem for He is good, for His kindness is forever
He who makes peace in His heights, He shall make peace upon us and upon all Israel; and say
Amen
