View interactive document page

Description

This is a handwritten book, likely written by a youth (likely Baghdadi) in 5603 (1902 or 1903). In the front, it is inscribed with the Hebrew date, and the assumed scribe: Ha-Tseir Katsuri ben Shaul Yaʻaḳov Yehudah Yaʻaḳov. Inside is the entire Passover Hagadah with small illustrations and decorations, as well as other prayers and poems from other parts of Jewish liturgy: Lekhah Dodi and Yedid Nefesh from Sabbath Evening prayers. The text of the Hagadah includes a paragraph-by-paragraph translation of the Hebrew text to Judeo-Arabic.

Words to you, O group of those present, and to everyone who is
absent from those present: we tell you about what
happened and occurred in the time of our fathers and our past grandfathers:
What happened to them in the land of Egypt regarding the slavery
in which they were enslaved under Pharaoh the wicked, and how
the Lord of the Worlds, Holy is He, heard their prayer and their cry
and sent Moses and everyone who was with him:
These are the ten plagues that descended upon Egypt,
and each one of them was more severe than the other, and how
each one of them distinguished between Israel and between Egypt, as it is
written in the Holy Torah:

the Egyptians were struck in Egypt with ten plagues, and at the sea they were struck
with fifty plagues? In Egypt, what does it say? "Then the magicians said
unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God." And at the sea, what does it say? "And Israel saw
the great hand which the Lord laid upon the Egyptians, and the people feared the Lord,
and they believed in the Lord, and in His servant Moses."

so and so, and likewise the congregation says with him, each one of them
How many abundant favors has the Omnipresent bestowed upon us!

Holy Temple stood. For what reason? For the reason that the Holy One, Blessed be He, passed
over the houses of our ancestors in Egypt, as it is said: "And you shall say, It is the sacrifice of the Lord's passover,
who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the
Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped."
Rabbi Mattia ben Heresh says: Anyone who has not said these three
things on Passover has not fulfilled his obligation, and these are they: Passover,
Matzah, and Maror. The Passover offering that our ancestors used to eat when the Holy
Temple stood, for what reason? For the reason that the Holy One, Blessed be

Rabbi Shimon says: Three who have eaten
at a table and did not say over it words of Torah, it is as if
they ate from sacrifices to the dead, as it is said: 'For all tables
are full of vomit and filth, without the Omnipresent.' But three who have eaten
at one table and said over it words of Torah, it is as if
they ate from the table of the Omnipresent, Blessed be He, as it is said:
'And he spoke to me: This is the table which is before the Lord.'
Rabbi Akiva says: Anyone who does not visit
the sick, it is as if he spills blood, as it is said:

This bread that we are eating,
because the dough of our fathers did not have time
Unleavened bread
to leaven until the King of kings of kings revealed Himself to them,
the Holy One, blessed be He, and redeemed them immediately, as it is said: And they baked
the dough which they brought out of Egypt into unleavened cakes, for it was not leavened,
because they were driven out of Egypt and could not delay, nor had they prepared any provisions for themselves.
⟦line⟧ Rabban Gamliel said, etc.
This that we are eating, for what reason? On
account that the Egyptians embittered the lives of our fathers

In every generation, a person is obligated to show himself as if he went out:
Meaning, in every age and age, a person must see himself
as if he came out of Egypt, as the verse says:
And you shall tell your son on that day, saying: It is because of this that the Lord did for me
when I came out of Egypt:
Maror
this that we eat, for what reason?
Because the Egyptians embittered the lives of our fathers in Egypt,
as it is said: And they embittered their lives with hard labor, with mortar and bricks,
and with all manner of labor in the field; all their labor which they made them serve was with rigor:
In every
generation, a person is obligated to thank, to praise, to laud,
to glorify, to exalt, to honor, to bless, to extol, and to adore Him who performed
all these miracles for our fathers and for us; He brought us out from slavery
to freedom, from sorrow to joy, from mourning to a festival, from darkness to a great light,
and from subjugation to redemption; and let us say before Him, Hallelujah:
Generation

You shall fear the Lord your God and Him you shall serve ..
The sign of God your God you shall fear and Him you shall serve
In every
generation and generation a person is obligated to see themselves
And every generation and generation it is necessary for a human to look at themselves
as if they went out from Egypt, as it is said: And you shall tell your son on that day
Like the one who went out from Egypt as He said: and you shall tell your son on the day
saying: because of this the Lord did for me when I went out from Egypt
This is to say: because of this God acted for me in my going out from Egypt
Not our ancestors alone did the Holy One, blessed be He, redeem
Not our fathers alone did God Almighty save
but even us He redeemed with them, as it is said: And us He brought out from there
But even us He saved with them as He said: and us He brought out from there
to bring us in to give us the land which He swore to our ancestors
Therefore
we are obligated to thank, to praise,
to laud, to glorify, to exalt, to honor,
to bless, to extol, and to adulate Him who performed for our ancestors and for us all these miracles ..

They said:
Eliezer and Rabbi Joshua and Rabbi Eleazar ben Azariah and Rabbi
Akiva and Rabbi Tarfon were reclining in Bnei Brak, and they were telling
of the Exodus from Egypt all that night until their students came and said
to them: O our teachers, the dawn has risen and it is time for the morning Recitation of the Shema. And they said to them:
We have heard, O our children, may God bless you; and they arose and prayed the
morning prayer with their students in joy and gladness and love, and they said the complete Hallel,
and they read from the Torah, and they brought a Torah scroll and read the portion 'Go unto Pharaoh.'
He said to them:
