Handwritten Passover Hagadah

View interactive document page

Description

This is a handwritten book, likely written by a youth (likely Baghdadi) in 5603 (1902 or 1903). In the front, it is inscribed with the Hebrew date, and the assumed scribe: Ha-Tseir Katsuri ben Shaul Yaʻaḳov Yehudah Yaʻaḳov. Inside is the entire Passover Hagadah with small illustrations and decorations, as well as other prayers and poems from other parts of Jewish liturgy: Lekhah Dodi and Yedid Nefesh from Sabbath Evening prayers. The text of the Hagadah includes a paragraph-by-paragraph translation of the Hebrew text to Judeo-Arabic.

By Rabbi
Yehuda HaLevi, of blessed memory
My beloved, have you forgotten | your resting place between my breasts
And why have you sold me | forever to those who enslave me
Was it not then when I went out to you | and a pursuer pursued me
And your transgression and your right hand | and my face and between my times
And my love was yours | fearing your will for
And how can you apportion praise | of my glory to anyone but me
Rejected, do not stray | and pursued until my destruction
Like you in the captivity of Greece | burdened like the yoke of the Almighty
Is there a redeemer besides you | and imprisoned in the mixture against me
Give strength to me because | to you I shall give my love
Be strong

If He had given us their wealth and not
granted it all to us here, it would have been enough for us, and not
if He had only drowned our enemies in it, it would have been enough for us
He drowned us within it and did not cover us with the sea, it would have been enough for us
if He had only opened for us the crossing path
as He split the sea for us and we passed through it
if He had only led us through it on dry land
on dry ground, as we walked through the sea on dry land
and had not sunken our oppressors within it, it would have been enough for us
and had not submerged the enemies within it, it would have been enough for us
if He had only sunken our oppressors within it and not
as He submerged the enemies within it and not
supplied our needs in the desert for forty years

Your Sukkah of peace shall illuminate, the earth shall scatter
We shall rejoice and be glad in You, hasten Beloved
For the appointed time has come and our time, for who has paid
A sign for Israel as what
Friend and none besides Him I shall hasten : like a Seraph you shall look
Your uncle : it shall drip like the day upon an apple : and his lips escaped
They shall express : like a ball all His law and remember : day by day the wing of our groom :
Our captivities were torn apart : for the ambush You gave a day
A wonder : hot Your salvation shall grant us : for as Your hook upon a sin
Pursue Your life and the wicked : and spread and the defect ascended
And forever against it : Your faces our time we gave : : :
God ⟦...⟧ shall return Your ⟦great⟧ furnace slaughtered upon a set table

There you shall be blessed in the world of Torah: He brought me to the banqueting house
And his banner: and his banner over me was love: Sustain me with flagons
Stay me with apples: for I am sick with love
The myrtle hints at the three patriarchs: His left hand is under my head
And his right: and what is His left hand under my head: and His right hand shall embrace me
I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem: by the gazelles, or by the hinds
Of the field: that ye awaken not, nor stir up love, until it please
The voice of my beloved! behold, he cometh: leaping upon the mountains, skipping
Upon the hills: My beloved is like a gazelle or a young hart
Behold, he standeth behind our wall: he looketh in through the windows
He peereth through the lattice: My beloved spoke, and said unto me: Rise up
My love, my fair one, and come away

And men of faith have been lost, those who come with the power
of their deeds ⟦line⟧
Mighty ones to stand in the breach, repelling
the decrees ⟦line⟧
They were a wall and a shelter for us in the day of wrath
Extinguishing anger with their whisper ⟦line⟧
They halted fury with their prayer, before they called You
You answered them ⟦line⟧
They knew how to entreat and to appease, as a father You pitied
for their sake ⟦line⟧
You did not turn them away empty-handed; from the multitude
of our sins we have lost them ⟦line⟧
They were taken from us due to our sins, they have departed
to their rest ⟦line⟧
They left us to sighing, the menders of the
fence have ceased ⟦line⟧
Those who turn back wrath have been cut off, those who rise in the breach
are no more ⟦line⟧
Those worthy of appeasing You are gone, we have wandered
to the four corners ⟦line⟧
A remedy we did not find, we returned to You
with shame on our faces ⟦line⟧

Of David: Blessed be the Lord my Rock: who trains my hands for battle: my fingers for war

Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous: praise is comely for the upright:
Give thanks to the Lord with the harp: sing praises to Him with the ten-stringed lute: sing to Him
A new song: play skillfully with a shout of joy: for the word of the Lord is right
And all His works are done in faithfulness
⟦line⟧ A Psalm or Song for the Sabbath day ⟦line⟧
It is a good thing to give thanks to the Lord: and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High: to declare
Your lovingkindness in the morning: and Your faithfulness every night: upon a ten-stringed instrument and upon the lute:
Upon the solemn sound with the harp: for You, Lord, have made me glad through Your work: in the works of Your hands
