Director of the Community
Based on the increase in aid granted by the Presidency of the Community to the
needy members of the community, and based on the insufficiency of the advance amount in the
Community fund, which amounts to 100/- Dinars (one hundred dinars) and is allocated for administrative
petty expenses for the community's institutions, please obtain His Excellency the President's approval to
withdraw an urgent advance in the amount of 70/- Dinars (seventy dinars) to remain
in the fund for the aid account.
Therefore, please obtain His Excellency the President's approval on
this matter.

Since the aid expenses have increased
due to the increase in the needy, and since the advance
allocated for administrative matters, amounting to one hundred dinars,
is no longer sufficient, I request approval to withdraw an
urgent advance for these aids to be repaid at
the end of each month in the amount of 70/- Dinars.

Further to the letter of the Presidency of the Lay Council No. J / 52/922 dated 4 / 8 / 1952
and the warning submitted to you through the Notary Public under general number 2851 dated 3 / 12 / 1952

concluded between you and the tenants, and what was carried out by you after the death of the previous trustee.
2 - A statement of the amounts that were in your possession, collected from rents and debts, at the time of the death of the previous trustee and which

His Eminence the Respected Head of the Jewish Community in Baghdad
Greetings and respect,
Miss Najiba Ezra Sofer has presented the attached copy of the document issued by the Presidency
of the Rabbis in Baghdad under number 33 and dated 28 / 6 / 1951, signed by the Secretary of the Jewish
Spiritual Council in Baghdad, which states that on 9 May 1951, the engagement contract of Mr.
Edouard Isaac Battat to the aforementioned Miss (Baha'iyya) Ezra Sofer was conducted. Since Miss Najiba
professes the Baha'i Faith, that religion which recognizes the truth of all heavenly religions, she claims that
the mentioned contract was conducted for her on the basis that she embraces the (Baha'i Faith) and not [Jewish], because a Jew
who embraces the Baha'i Faith does not remain [Jewish]. Please kindly inform us whether this engagement contract
was conducted between a [Jewish] young man and a young woman who embraces the [Baha'i Faith] and not between two Jewish persons,
and that the girl's Baha'i religion is likewise recorded in the engagement contract registers as recorded in the document [or] that,
on the contrary, the engagement contract was conducted between two Jewish persons according to the provisions of Article (5) of the Provisions and Rules
of Jurisprudence for the Mosaic Community in Iraq published in the Iraqi Gazette, Issue 2988, dated 1 / 2 / 1951.
Please kindly provide us with your clear answer in this regard, and please accept our utmost thanks

Dear Mr. Schemtob,
re Dr. Joseph Daniel,
116 Court Street, Plattsburg,
N.Y., U.S.A.
I have just written you a letter concerning the matter of betrothal
and in connection with this problem I want to raise the problem of the above-
named who has been betrothed to Miss Nagiba Khatoon and whose case has been
before our Beth Din for the last two years.
We have tried to contact Miss Khatoon but, unfortunately, we have not
received any answer from her. We have been informed indirectly, however, that
she has no objection to giving him his freedom, but we are not willing to take
this information as final, as we would like to have it in writing from her,
with her signature testified by two witnesses, that she is quite willing for
Dr. Daniel, her betrothed fiance, to give her a Get, and that she is ready to
receive it if it is sent to Baghdad. The addres of Miss Khatoon at the time of
betrothal was River Street, Baghdad (next to the Chamber of Commerce), but I
understand from a letter reseived from <del>that</del> the British Embassy, Baghdad in
January 1952, that you had been in toych with Miss Khatoon and that you would
be contacting the signatory of the letter Mr. D. J. D Maitland when her written
consent had been obtained. No doubt, you will know Miss Khatoon's present
address .
I should be glad to have some information from you concerning this
matter as Dr. Daniel would like to consider himself free as soon as possible,
especially as it is now about seven years since the betrothal took place.
Yours Sincerely,

of parents or branches of parents or a wife for the deceased, the late Ezra Menachem Daniel. Therefore, those lands transfer to the late
Saleh Daniel and his wife, and after them they transfer to their children, who are Sassoon, Rima, and Nozha, the children of Saleh Daniel and their branches.
Accordingly, the maternal uncle and aunt, and the paternal and maternal grandfather and grandmother have no share in the transfer according to the law."))
2 - We also inquired with Mr. Sami al-Naqshali (via His Excellency Professor Arif al-Suwaidi) regarding the matter, and he replied to us
with the same answer received from Mr. Jacob Shlomo mentioned in the first paragraph.
It appears from this that you are not among those entitled to the right of transfer in those Miri lands.
Please accept our highest respect.

His Excellency the Acting Head of the Community and President of the Lay Council in Baghdad, Respected
After greetings
Reference to your letter No. T / 2771 / 52 dated 20 / 10 / 1952 regarding the two letters received
by you dated September 11, 1952, from Messrs. Yaqub and Ishaq, sons of Shaul Yehuda, residing
in Beirut, claiming that they are relatives of the late Ezra Menachem Daniel, as their paternal grandfather named Dawood
Yehuda is the son of the maternal aunt of the late Menachem Daniel, and requesting verification as to whether they are among those entitled to the right of transfer
in the Miri lands belonging to the late Ezra Menachem Daniel. And you, in turn, are requesting us to inform you whether
these individuals are included in the inheritance or not - we inform you of the following:-
The late Ezra Menachem Saleh Daniel has passed away, and his Miri lands are transferred to his paternal grandfather, the late
Saleh Menachem Daniel, and his paternal grandmother, the late Rahma daughter of Dawood Qahtan, and to his maternal grandfather, the late Abdullah Shlomo,
and his maternal grandmother, the late Rachel daughter of Faraj Hayyim, due to the absence of children, descendants, parents, descendants of parents,
or a wife for the deceased, the late Ezra Menachem Daniel. Therefore, those lands are transferred to the late Saleh Daniel
and his wife, and after them, they are transferred to their children, who are Sassoon, Rima, and Farha, the children of Saleh Daniel, and their descendants.
Accordingly, the maternal uncle and maternal aunt of the grandfather and grandmother, whether paternal or maternal, have no share in that transfer according to the law.
For this reason, we have explained this to you.
As per your request, we return the two mentioned letters to you. Respectfully yours.

To the Honorable President of the Mosaic Community
- Baghdad -
After greetings and respect, Yaqub Shaul Daoud Ishaq Yehuda is honored to inform you that the late Ezra Menachem Daniel, who left his Miri properties
as an inheritance to each of his relatives, is also one of our relatives. You know, our Master President of the Community, that our kinship is that our late grandfather Daoud
Yehuda was the cousin of the late Menachem Daniel. As for the name of Menachem's mother, it was Rahma, and the name of Daoud Yehuda's mother was Hanna, as we believe.
According to our information from the Baghdad Peace Judge, Mr. Burhan al-Din al-Kilani, we are entitled to the inheritance through this kinship, and you must know
the exact names from the Rabbinate records in your area, because we left Iraq in 1930 and we still hold Iraqi
citizenship. We request you to register our name in the list with those claiming the inheritance, and many thanks to your position.
Please accept our highest respect, and may you remain well.
Yaqub Shaul Yehuda
