Israeli in Baghdad
The court's response was that Milka daughter of Ephraim had claimed before it that Daniel
Makhlouf had become engaged to her, and after hearing the witnesses she was unable to prove her claim, however since
she remained insistent that the aforementioned Daniel is her fiancé, the Religious Court decided
that it is not legally permissible for a second person to enter into an engagement with her until the aforementioned Daniel agrees
to divorce her, and indeed the aforementioned agreed to divorce her and divorced her on 25 May 936

To the Head of the Jewish Community in Baghdad
With reference to your letter dated September 6, 36
Since the subject of the lawsuit filed in our court by Malka daughter of Ibrahim is her request
for alimony for her daughter from the defendant Daniel son of Makhlouf, and the aforementioned defendant has denied
that the plaintiff <del>his wife</del> is his wife and that the girl for whom alimony is requested is his daughter, as we informed you in our previous letter
And since your aforementioned letter indicates that the plaintiff has claimed before you that the defendant Makhlouf
had proposed to her, and it did not clarify whether the claim includes the completion of the marriage contract and the husband's consummation with the plaintiff
and the birth of a daughter to him from her, and as our court was unable to understand the content of the decision taken by
the Religious Court, whether its content was the proof of the defendant's marriage to the plaintiff and his consummation with her
and the proof that the girl whose alimony is requested in our court is his daughter or not, therefore clarification was required
from you regarding this matter, so we request you to provide us with clarifications about that, provided that the answer reaches us before
the day appointed for the trial on October 1, 1936 AD.

The Israeli Religious Court has responded to the content of your letter referred to
that it has not been proven to it the marriage of the aforementioned Malka Ephraim to the person named Daniel bin Makhlouf, nor
that the aforementioned person had consummated the marriage with her, nor that the girl is his daughter. All there is to the matter is that the aforementioned Malka
insisted that Daniel Makhlouf is her fiancé, so the court ruled for divorce, as we have previously
explained to your court;

During the consideration of the cassation case formed between the Baghdad
Census Officer and Reuben Heskel, it became necessary to ask you whether
the community collects a fee for the circumcision of children or not, and if
so, is there a special register for this fee or is it recorded in the
general register of the community's revenue? Please inform us of that.
