UNIVERSITY OF LONDON GENERAL CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION EXAMINATION
The statement on the other side of this form shows grades awarded to you either at the Advanced level or at the Ordinary level in each subject for which you entered. No notices showing combined Ordinary and
Advanced results will be issued. This information is sent before the issue of Certificates and the University reserves the right to correct any errors. The document is not a Certificate and must not be regarded as such. No further
information will be issued by the University; the decisions of the Examiners, which have been reached after careful consideration, are final. The grades awarded are to be interpreted as follows :
Grades A, B, C, D, E and O at Ordinary level and A, B, C, D and E at Advanced level are grades of pass in descending order of merit. Grade O at Advanced level shows a compensatory Ordinary level pass. Grade
F (Advanced level) and F, G, H (Ordinary level) denote failure. An 'X' indicates absence from the examination in a subject.
In French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish two grades are given. The first represents the result obtained in the subject as a whole including the oral test. On the right of this appears the grade given in the oral
examination only. At the Advanced level the oral grades are A, B, C, D, E, O and F, and at the Ordinary level are A, B, C and F. Failure (F) in the oral test does not necessarily indicate failure in the subject as a whole.
There are no oral tests in these languages in the Overseas examination.
At the Advanced level in Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Physics and Zoology, two grades will appear. The first represents the grade obtained in the subject as a whole including the practical test. On the right
of this a grade will appear for the practical test only.
In English Language, for candidates who have taken the Spoken English test, the first grade is the English Language result. The second grade is the Spoken English result expressed as A, B or C (Pass) or F (Fail). To obtain a pass grade in Spoken
English, the candidate must have satisfied the examiner in both reading and conversation.
Grade O at Ordinary level indicates a narrow margin of failure, G that the margin was wider, and H that the candidate did not obtain more than about
one-third of the marks for the subject as a whole.
In the Special paper Grade 1 indicates Distinction, Grade 2 Merit and Grade U an unclassified result. No candidate may be awarded Distinction or Merit unless he has attained grades A, B, C, D or E at the Advanced
level in the same subject. Special papers are available only in the Summer examination and only to candidates in the United Kingdom.
If these results oblige you to consider entering for the next examination you are urged to consult the appropriate authority or regulations without delay.

The notification of result, which is issued to every candidate, is not a Certificate.
Successful candidates receive, in addition, a Certificate recording the tests in which they
have passed.
No reliance should be placed on the accuracy of the result slip should there be
any alteration or erasure or tear in it.
Candidates whose result in the whole examination is shown as "Failed in Oral
Tests only" can take the oral tests alone, on one occasion, not more than 14 months after
the date of the examination shown on the front of this notification. They must offer
Dictation, Reading and Conversation and present this notification to the Local Secretary
when making their entry. If successful in the oral tests they will be awarded a Certificate.
