cates and the University reserves the right to correct it. The document
is not a Certificate and must not be regarded as such. No further
information will be issued by the University; the decisions of the Exam-
iners, which have been reached after careful consideration, are final.
Ordinary Level
At this level grades A, C and E are grades of pass in descending order
of merit reading from left to right, and Grades F and H, followed by
the word FAIL, denote failure. An 'X' indicates absence from the exam-
ination in a subject. 'Z' indicates that a script has been received in
answer to questions set on a subject, syllabus or option other than the
one for which you entered, and no result is given.

Advanced Level
At this level grades A, B, C, D and E are grades of pass in descending
order of merit, reading from left to right, and grade F, followed by the
word FAIL, denotes failure. Grade O, followed by ORD, at this level
indicates a compensatory Ordinary level pass. The words FAIL and
ORD apply to the subject as a whole. An 'X' indicates absence from
the examination in a subject. 'Z' indicates that a script has been received
in answer to questions on a subject, syllabus or option other than
the one for which you entered, and no result is given.

grades are given. The first represents the grade obtained in the subject
as a whole, including the practical test; on the right of this appears
the grade given in the practical test only.
Candidates who entered at this level for both Pure Mathematics and
Applied Mathematics but who passed only in Papers I, II and III are
awarded passes in Pure Mathematics and Mathematics (Pure and
Applied); a compensatory pass at Ordinary level in Applied Mathe-
matics may also be given. Candidates who passed only in Papers I, III and

sents the result obtained in the subject as a whole including the oral
test. On the right of this appears the grade given in the oral examination
only. The oral grades are A, B, C, D, E, O and F. Failure in the oral
test does not necessarily indicate failure in the subject as a whole.

not be issued" will appear at the bottom of the form overleaf whenever
such a candidate fails to qualify for the award of a Certificate.

The document is not a Certificate and must not be regarded as such. Grades A, B, C, D, E and O at Ordinary level and A, B, C, D and E at Advanced level are grades of pass in descending order of merit. other than that ⟦illegible⟧ which you entered, and no result is given.
There are ⟦illegible⟧ languages at this level.
To help ⟦illegible⟧ at this level to assess their future prospects
grade F indicates ⟦illegible⟧ narrow margin of failure, G that the margin was wider and
H that the candidate did not obtain more than about one third of the marks for
the subject as a whole.
Advanced Level
At this level grades A, B, C, D and E are grades of pass in descending order of
merit, reading from left to right, and grade F denotes failure. Grade O at this
level indicates a compensatory Ordinary level pass. An 'X' indicates absence
from the examination in a subject. 'Z' indicates that a script has been received
in answer to questions set on a subject, syllabus or option other than the one for
which you entered, and no result is given.
In Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Physics and Zoology two grades
will appear. The first represents the grade obtained in the subject as a whole
including the practical test. On the right of this appears the grade given in the
practical test only.
Candidates who entered at this level for both Pure Mathematics and Applied
Mathematics but who passed only in Papers I, II and III are awarded passes in
Pure Mathematics and Mathematics (Pure and Applied). A compensatory pass
at Ordinary level in Applied Mathematics may also be given. Candidates who
passed only in Papers I, III and IV are awarded passes in Applied Mathematics
and Mathematics (Pure and Applied). A compensatory pass at Ordinary level in
Pure Mathematics may also be given.
There are no oral tests in the languages at this level except for certain schools
in West Africa. For candidates from these schools there are two grades in French,
German, Italian, Russian and Spanish. The first represents the result obtained in the
subject as a whole including the oral test. On the right of this appears the grade
given in the oral examination only. The oral grades are A, B, C, D, E, O and F.
Failure in the oral test does not necessarily indicate failure in the subject as a whole.
Special Provision Governing the Award of Certificates
Private candidates who sit at centres in certain countries and who, at the
time of entry, do not hold a qualification which exempts them, are required to
pass in three subjects including English Language or in three subjects with a satis-
factory standard of attainment in English Language (grades F or G) in order to
qualify for a Certificate. The words "Certificate will not be issued" will appear
at the bottom of the form overleaf whenever such a candidate fails to qualify for
the award of a Certificate.
