Election of the Jewish Lay Council
The Jewish General Council held an extraordinary session at five o'clock
on the evening of Thursday, October 30, 1947, at the headquarters of the Jewish Community
administration, presided over by His Eminence Rabbi Sassoon Khedhouri, to elect the Lay Council.
The result of the election was that Mr. Eliyahu Hayyim Tawfiq became President, and Messrs.
Sassoon Abboudi Beshi - Zion Shohet Jahir - Abdullah Zion Shahna - Ezra
Shaul Loyal - Gurji Salwa Satloon - Moshe Daoud Shohet - Meir Shaul Basri
and Haron Shamoon Shmail became members of the new Lay Council.

and reducing them as much as possible. Therefore, I find myself forced, with regret, to submit
my resignation from the membership of the respected Council, requesting you to kindly accept it. I would like to seize
this opportunity to express my deep appreciation for what I have always received from Your Excellency
and all the honorable members in terms of friendly cooperation and the precious trust you have bestowed upon me,
