The New Lay Council
Based on the invitation of His Eminence Rabbi Sassoon Khedouri, President of the Jewish Community, the
General Council met on Wednesday evening, June 9, 1937, to elect a president and members of a Lay Council for the
1937/1939 term, due to the expiration of the previous council's term. The election was held by secret ballot
and the result was the election of Mr. Yehuda Saleh Zelouf for the presidency, and Messrs. Yusuf
Iqa, Ezra Levy, Khedouri Levy, Ghazal Heskel, Shua Cohen, Khedouri Shukur, Mansour Saleh,
and Ibrahim Nahum for membership.

Based on the expiration of the term of the Lay Council, I invited the General Council
to meet on Wednesday, May 19, 937, to elect a president and a new Lay Council.
Since a legal quorum was not achieved, the meeting was adjourned until Wednesday,
June 9, 937. The election took place in the second meeting by secret ballot
under the supervision of a committee composed of members Rabbi Salman Hooki Abboudi, Israel Nassim
Hayi, and Daoud Moallem Saleh. The result was the election of Mr. Yehuda Saleh Zelouf
to the presidency, and each of the gentlemen: Meir Eliya Karchi, Shalom Lawi, Khadhouri Meir
Lawi, Ezra Bahr Meir Dangour, Khadhouri Murad Shuker, Meir Mash'au,
and Ibrahim Nahum for membership.
Therefore, the gentlemen listed above have become the president and members of the Lay
Council for the term beginning on June 9, 937;
