Our overwhelming feelings at the death of Sir Israel Brodie must become
gratitude for what he dedicated to Anglo-Jewish relations. We must deeply thank his contribution
in establishing our foundations and institutes, and for his steadfast support for Torah education, and for the causes of Israel
and the Jews and new humanity, and not least for the steadfast and spiritual friendship that
he gave to the members of the associations which made him that beloved and
respected personality.
Perhaps he did not possess the pioneering organizational tendency of Nathan Adler, who ventured to deposit
Anglo-Jewish associations such as Jews' College, the United Synagogue, and the Board
of Guardians. He certainly did not inherit the authoritarian recognition and ambition of Hermann Adler,
nor at times the dynamic bluntness or literature of Joseph Hertz. But he possessed excellent awareness
and a leadership spirit that no one else possessed.
He was certainly closer to the people than anyone else. He was above them all
as a provincial Chief Rabbi, who performed services during the two World Wars, establishing the greatest
character from North Africa to the Far East, maintaining his leadership for fourteen
years as Chief Rabbi of Australia, maintaining his regular visits to Israel,
and he obtained an honorary doctorate in America. He was at home in the five
continents.
Gifted with the ability to speak fluently and having the ability to communicate with people which
the Hebrews lacked. He was capable of making relations with society and with
