Dear Mr. Farid,
With reference to our verbal conversation concerning the Shamash School, I wish to tell you that I can furnish you with the following information about the present status of this school.
1. The Shamash School at the present comprises two secondary classes, namely, the Fourth year and the Fifth year groups. These two classes, number about seventy students of both sexes.
2. At the end of the Fourth Year most of our students sit for the London University G.C.E. Examinations for which they are coached by qualified and efficient teachers during that year. At the end of the Fifth year, which is the graduating year, our students sit for the Iraq State Baccalaureate Examination for Secondary Education, usually with notable suceess.
3. The Shamash School students are at the present accommodated at the Frank Iny School building, free of charge. As you know this arrangement was made since the spring of 1951, when the students of all the community schools were grouped in one building, namely, the Frank Iny School building at the request of the Ministry of Education. This arrangement is likely to continue for a long time to come.
4. Notwithstanding this, the Ministry of Education still recognizes the Shamash School as a separate institution by itself, known as the Shamash Secondary School, as distinguished from the Frank Iny School which form the Primary and Intermediate classes.
5. The Shamash School has a cadre of its own, although some of the teaching staff who are on the cadre of the Frnak Iny School do some teaching at the Shamash School as part of their job.
6. The Shamash School forms an essential and an integral part of our educational system in Baghdad; and as you very well know, it draws its income partly from its Trust & partly from school fees paid by the students & partly from the Community Funds if & when available. Financially, it is run according to a budget of its own. Its expenditure during the last academic year 1953/1954, amounted to I.D. 3750/-, which is about double as much as the yearly income it draws from the Shamash School Trust.
Hoping that this information will prove helpful, I close with my best regards to you.
Yours sincerely,
⟦ASObadiah⟧

Mr. Frank Iny,

New York.
My dear Mr. Frank,
I take this occasion to introduce myself to you in my
capacity as Principal of the Frank Iny School, Baghdad. As you
might have heard already this is the only school left to our
Community here besides the Menahem Daniel Primary School at the
present time. It is well known by everybody here that were it
not for the benevolent donation that you have so liberally
made to our Community in Baghdad, in the form of the Frank Iny
School, our children would not have had the same opportunities
for their education as they are having at the present moment.
For your information, your school now comprises about 485
students of both sexes distributed over 2 Kindergarten Classes,
7 Primary classes, 6 Intermediate classes and 2 Secondary classes.
It is with the greatest pride that I tell you that this
school ranks in its standard of education amongst the highest
schools in Baghdad of its kind, whether Governmental or non-
Governmental. Besides the subjects which are required by our
Ministry of Education to be taught I have introduced in this
school the programs of the old Alliance School in French together
with the Cambridge University Syllabus in English, & finally the
Syllabus of the London University General Certificate of Education
Examinations which now takes the place of the old Matriculation
Examinations Syllabus.
To give you an idea about the staff & the budget of the
school, I am enclosing, herewith, a detailed statement from
which it is clear that the deficit in the Budget for this year
amounts to I.D.10946/-. This deficit will have to be met from
the Community funds somehow; and in case the community find
themselves unable to meet all this deficit, it seems that I shall
be left with the only alternative of increasing the school fees
next year. At the present the school in charging the maximum
fees of I.D.21/000 per year for every student enlisting in the
Secondary Classes, and I.D.17/000 for every student enlisting
in the Intermediate Classes and I.D.10/500 for every student
enlisting inthe Primary Classes. About 35% of our students are
exempted fully from school fees; another 35% pay reduced fees
and the remaining 30% pay full fees.
So much about the various information connected with the
school. The main object of my letter now is to come to you
with a special plea. As you very well know, this school was
planned to hold only twelve classrooms with the supplementary
rooms necessary for the library and the two laboratories. In

the next academic year beginning October, 1954 I shall have to
accomodate at least 17 different classes in the school. And
even if I turn the two laboratories into class rooms, the school
will still be short of 3 classrooms. It seems very urgent, there-
fore, that the present building be extended to include at least
two more rooms on the ground floor and another two rooms on top
of them on the first floor together with an additional staircase.
This will cost around I.D.5000/-.
Whether you feel inclined to complete this project which is
really an essential part of your main project or not is left for
your goodself to decide. At the same time I feel quite sure that
you would not like to see or to hear about the students in the
only school which carries your name being deprived from their
schooling on account of lack of accomodation.
Mr. Salman Daniel is going to take a trip to Europe this
summer, and he promised to get in touch with you to enlighten
you more on the subject.
I close with my best regards to you.
