To the Honorable Mr. Salman Daniel - Nice
Greetings - I am writing to you from Baghdad, where this city has been trapped in a heatwave unprecedented for
years. However, the weather has started to improve in the last two days, thank God. I hope that you and your family members
are in the best of health and wellness.
My dear Abu Daniel. Mr. Farid Samra visited me recently and asked me to write to you regarding
Mr. Frank Iny's building concerning the plots of land adjacent to the school. As the ⟦venerable⟧ committee
has begun to think seriously about establishing a school in the name of Menahem Daniel School to include some intermediate classes
from the Shamash School, the commercial branch intended to be opened in the future. Given the importance of the project and the need to complete it quickly,
Mr. Farid Samra asked me to write to you so that you may discuss the matter with Mr. Nazik Iny and finalize
the issue of selling the land to the community at its current price without the need to insist on selling it at a low price as
the committee was insisting on in the past. If it is not possible for you to convince Mr. Frank Iny to sell all the plots, it would be good if
the four plots adjacent to the school could be sold. I, in turn, ask you to take an interest in the matter and complete the sale process
in any case, given the importance of the project and the purpose for which the purchase of the land is requested.
As for the price, as I mentioned to you, the committee agrees to purchase at its current price, ⟦so I hope⟧
that you will be able to convince Mr. Nazik Iny to be as lenient as possible. If the idea of building
the Menahem Daniel School is realized, which compensates for the wing that was hoped to be added to the current school building, then
it will be possible to spend on the school from the Menahem Daniel endowments, and thus it will be possible to cover the deficit that
occurs in the school budget every year. So please attend to the sale transaction as much as you can, and many
thanks in advance.
Mr. Habib Tawfiq informed me that your protected son Sabah will return to Baghdad to participate in the entrance exam
for the fourth preparatory grade, which will take place on the 24th and 25th of next September, so we ask that there be in this decision
good for everyone. In conclusion, please convey my greetings to all your family members and to Mr. Frank Iny, and accept my
special greetings to you, and may you remain well.
Sincerely,
Abdullah Obadia

Dear Sir,
I thank you for your letter dated 17th October and am pleased
to note from the Principal's report the present arrangements for
continuing to run the two advanced classes of the Shamash Secondary
School and I trust that these arrangements will continue for the
benefit of the pupils concerned. The other points listed in the
Principal's letter have been carefully noted and acknowledged in my
letter addressed to Mr. Salman Aboody dated 18th August last. I am
naturally anxious to do everything possible to ensure the smooth
running of the School and am of course prepared to co-operate with
you to this end. At the same time I have already pointed out to
Mr. Aboody that <del>⟦illegible⟧</del> the Shamash School Building itself and the properties
which comprise the Trust are very extensive and require continual
repairs and attention if they are to be maintained as they should be,
and I am anxious that they should on no account be allowed to fall
into decay through neglect or lack of adequate funds for maintenance
and repairs. However, in view of the contents of your letter and the
special request made to me by Mr. Salman Aboody to increase the annual
grant to a sum not exceeding ID.1300 per annum and have advised Mr.
Aboody accordingly to pay this sum in two equal instalments, the first
ID.650 on receipt of these instructions and the second being the
balance in February 1956, it being clearly understood that the above
sum of ID.1300 is in respect of the current academic year 1st October
1955 to the end September 1956.
I trust that having made this provision the Shamash Secondary
School classes will continue to benefit from the arrangements made
and that the coming year will be one of progress and achievement
reflecting credit on all concerned.
Yours very truly,
Sgd.

To the honorable and distinguished Mr. Frank Iny - New York
My dear Mr. Frank,
May God bless your times. I have written this letter first to inquire about your health and the health of your family, hoping you are
always well.
What prompted me to write to you now is the concern for the interest of the school that you were kind enough to donate its building and endow it
to serve the children of your community in Baghdad. May God reward you for this glorious deed. There are three matters I saw
fit to discuss with you:-
First - There are some renovations and additions to the school's structural and electrical installations that circumstances require to be carried out from
time to time according to the needs of the school and students. Among these renovations:
1 - Paving approximately (500) square meters of the school yards so that student transport buses can park and wait
there at dismissal time, to prevent congestion in the street, especially on rainy days, and to protect children from the danger
of traffic accidents they have been exposed to in the past. This process costs about (500/-) Dinars.
2 - All electrical installations in the school are unfit for use at the present time. It has happened on
many occasions during the past three years that the walls of some classrooms became electrified, endangering the lives of students
to risk. As a result of the inspection of these installations by experts, it appeared that their wiring is not proficient and that it is necessary
to make a radical change in them, which costs about (750/-) Dinars.
3 - There is the hall stage which requires about (250/-) Dinars so it can be made suitable for acting and public speaking by
the students. No doubt you are among those who appreciate these student activities at their true value, as is established and known about
your generous person.
In this case, the total urgent and necessary expenses for the school would be about (1500/-) Dinars.
The administration of the community in Baghdad does not have the resources to cover these expenses in addition to the annual expenses
others which have reached, under current circumstances, about (18,000) Dinars according to the budget that the director of
the school, Mr. Abdullah Obadia, previously showed you last year. This is knowing that the total
fees collected from students annually are always less than six thousand Dinars. Therefore, I have come to request you
to help the school administration meet these necessary needs for your school, which has become at the present time
one of the famous schools in the country, if not one of the most famous schools in Baghdad, characterized by its excellent academic
level, the upbringing of its students, its teaching staff, and its good management. For the results of the general
ministerial examinations (Baccalaureate) for the three levels—primary, intermediate, and preparatory—in our school were more brilliant than all other schools,
both official and private.
As a result

There is no doubt that all members of the community in Baghdad thank you for this glorious and visible work and appreciate it.
Second — Your school, when first built, was established to accommodate students of an intermediate school with only (12) classes
with all other facilities such as a library, laboratories, a hall, etc... Circumstances have required that this school contain
at present students of (17) classes of all ages and genders, starting from kindergarten to the fifth preparatory grade,
It has become necessary in this situation to use the library, the hall, and the laboratories as classrooms for students, which has deprived these
students of many necessary study facilities, in addition to the crowding of some of them in some rooms that are not suitable
as classrooms.
The school principal, Mr. Abdullah Obadia, has recently developed designs (Plans)
to build an additional wing in the school consisting of two additional classrooms and two large laboratories on the lower floor with two
laboratories, one for chemistry (Chemistry Laboratory) and the other for physics (
Physics Laboratory) on the upper floor, and he will send these designs to you for your review.
In view of the school's urgent need for this project, which is considered an integral part of your original project, I hope that you,
along with the rest of the community members in Baghdad, will kindly look with favor upon bringing it into existence as soon as possible.
By doing so, you will have carried out the greatest and largest charitable project for the members of your community.
Third — The last two classes of the school, which are the fourth preparatory and fifth preparatory grades, currently contain
a large number of students with varying scientific levels and abilities. This has begun to cause major problems in teaching
regarding the reconciliation between the smart students and the weak students contained in one class.
The Presidency of the Community and the Administrative Committee, after consultation with your school principal, have thought of completing a new project, which is opening
a new preparatory school consisting of only two classes containing a homogeneous type of students, in addition to the two preparatory classes
currently existing in your school, provided that this project is funded by the endowments of the late Ezra Menachem Daniel, who
stipulated when making his endowment the building of a school in his name.
In view of the need for economy in teaching to manage this new school, we have thought of purchasing the largest
plots of vacant land adjacent to your school belonging to you, which are currently used as a warehouse for your factory in Baghdad.
In this process, two benefits can be achieved: first — using the same teachers to conduct teaching in both schools
due to their proximity to each other — second — gathering our school students in one area to facilitate their transportation and to benefit from the facilities
of both schools by all students at the same time.
Therefore, we hope that you will also favor this matter as quickly as possible and authorize whomever you appoint in Baghdad to complete
this sale transaction, and by doing so, you will have achieved a new project for the members of your community for which you deserve thanks and praise.

Finally, I am pleased to inform you that your school has currently become the only large building for the community which
provides services for social aspects. At the prize distribution ceremony for outstanding students held by the school administration
last year, the school garden accommodated no less than (1200) individuals from the community. Previously,
the school hall witnessed a marriage ceremony (Kiddushim) in the past, and we hope that other ceremonies such as the Bar Mitzvah will be held in the future.
Also, the number of school students has been increasing for two years, especially among the children who represent the new generation.
There is no doubt that if you had not donated to build this school, the situation of the community in Baghdad would be different from what it is now
in terms of education and social life. This is a favor of yours that cannot be forgotten.
In conclusion, I hope that our hope will not be disappointed in your completion of the project you started and that you will not delay in doing everything
that would serve the public interest to elevate your good reputation, which has long been mentioned among the members of the community. May God
grant us all success in serving the group, and may you remain ( ⟦illegible⟧ )
And on the occasion of the upcoming New Year, I wish you and your family long life and health ( ⟦illegible⟧ )

Dear Sir,
With reference to our verbal conversation on Friday, 15th July, concerning the granting of visas to the United Kingdom to graduates of my School for the purpose of studying in British Universities and acting on your suggestion, I wish to submit for your kind consideration the following cases :
1. Mr. Emil Abdullah Battat, a graduate of this year, has obtained admission to Edgbaston School of Science, Birmingham, which he is to join in September next. His father, Mr. Abdullah Battat is the assistant manager, The Eastern Bank Ltd., Baghdad and, I suppose, is well known to the British Embassy.
2. Mr. Ivor Abdullah Dangoor, graduated from my School this summer and is expecting to join the Edgbaston School of Science also next September to which he has already secured admission. His case is exactly similar to that of Emil Battat. His father, Mr. Abdullah Dangoor, has been for a long time a broker for the Iraq Mercantile Ltd., a British firm in Baghdad. He is a business man of good reputation.
3. Mr. Abdullah Ibrahim Tarzi, had graduated from Shamash Secondary School in June 1953. The Anglo-Jewish Association in London made him an award for four years' Scholarship to complete his studies in the United Kingdom. He has already secured admission to Battersea Polytechnic in London for the session commencing September, 1955. His father, Mr. Ibrahim Tarzi is an ex-civil servant of the Iraq Government and now is on pension. One of his brothers, Dr. Nagi Ibrahim, is at present working with the Iraq Government in Kut Hospital. A second brother, Anwar Ibrahim by name, is engaged in business in Baghdad.
4. Mr. Ely Israel Hay, has graduated from my School in June this year. He was similarly awarded a Scholarship of four years by the Anglo-Jewish Association in London to complete his studies in the United Kingdom. His family in Baghdad consists, at the present, of his mother and elder sister who works as a clerk with the Levant Import and Commercial Company Ltd. His father died in Baghdad only last year. Mr. E. I. Hay has already secured admission to Nottingham University, England for the session commencing September, 1955. He has his elder brother and another sister studying in England in the same University at the present.
Both Mr. Tarzi and Mr. Hay, being sent to the United Kingdom on Scholarship basis, will be made to sign an agreement before they leave, according to which they will have to serve in the Jewish Community institutions in Iraq a number of years equal to the number of years of their studies.
The first two students, Emil Battat and Ivor Dangoor have already obtained their Iraqi passports with the permission to reside abroad for four years. The last two candidates, Abdullah Tarzi and

Ely Hay are about to finish the same formalities for getting their
Iraqi passports with the necessary permission to reside abroad for
the duration of their studies. All four students have, as far as I
know, already applied to H. B. M. Consul in Baghdad for visas to the
United Kingdom.
Hoping that the above information will prove helpful for
granting these students their visas well before the next academic
year begins, and thanking you for your valuable help and cooperation,

Mr. Salman Aboudy,
Acting Trustee for the Shamash School Trust,
Baghdad.
Dear Mr. Salman,
With reference to our meeting on the 8th July to examine the present position of Shamash Secondary School, I wish to affirm the findings that we have arrived at, summarized in the following points:
1. The Shamash School at the present comprises two Secondary Classes, namely, the Fourth Year and the Fifth Year groups. These two classes number about seventy students of both sexes.
2. At the end of the Fourth Year most of our students sit for the London University G.C.E. Examinations for which they are coached by qualified and efficient teachers during that year. At the end of the Fifth Year, which is the graduating year, our students sit for the Iraq State Baccalaureate Examination for Secondary Education, usually with notable success.
3. The Shamash School students are at the present accommodated at the Frank Iny School building, free of charge. As is well known this arrangement was made since the spring of 1951, when the students of all the community Schools were grouped in one building, namely, the Frank Iny School building at the request of the Ministry of Education. This arrangement is likely to continue for a long time to come.
4. Notwithstanding this, the Ministry of Education still recognizes the Shamash School as a separate institution by itself, known as the Shamash Secondary School, as distinguished from the Frank Iny School which forms the Primary and Intermediate Classes.
5. The Shamash School has a cadre of its own, although some of the teaching staff who are on the cadre of <del>⟦illegible⟧</del> the Frank Iny School do some teaching at the Shamash School as part of their job.
6. The Shamash School forms an essential and an integral part of our Educational System in Baghdad; and as you very well know, it draws its income partly from its Trust and partly from school fees paid by the students and partly from the Community Funds if and when available. Its expenditures for the year 1953/1954 and for the present academic year 1954/1955, amounted to I.D.3799.836 and I.D. 3955.599 respectively as is shown in the attached statements. As is clear from the first statement the yearly expenses of the School is about double as much as the yearly income it ordinarily draws from the Shamash School Trust. If a teacher for the English language is to be recruited for the School from abroad, which I hope will be done next year, the total yearly expenditure will be increased by another seven hundred and fifty Dinars.
Hoping that these findings will prove helpful, I close with my best regards to you.
Sincerely yours,
