Dear Sir,
I would be very obliged to receive
from you some information about this
matter:-
One of my friends has taken
at your College the Arabic Language
and passed in it in Advanced level
in
<del>at</del> Summer 1952.
As it is his mother's tongue they
do not accept it in the university as a
subject in Advanced level, and I believe,
if I am right to say, that it has been
arranged by Mr. Khabaza with the
University of London <del>at that time</del> to be accepted
as a subject in Advanced level, althou⟦gh⟧

Mr. Sasson Hakkak,

Dear Mr. Hakkak,
In reply to your letter of 15th October, 1954,
concerning your question about the G.C.E. examination
in Arabic, all I can say is, that to the best of know-
ledge, English Universities in general consider a pass
in Arabic at the advanced level just as equal to a pass
in any other subject at the advanced level disregarding
whether arabic is the mother tongue of the candidate or not.
I do not personally know whether any arrangement
has been done with the University of London in the past
regarding this matter. It seems obvious that the best
quarter where you can get correct information about this
question is London University itself. I suggest that you
write to London University for enquiry on this subject. I
hope that you will get the answer to your question there.
Yours faithfully,

To,
Mr. Eric N. Metcalfe,
Quai du Bassin des Yachts,
Deauville (Calvados),
France.
My dear Metcalfe.
I have received your letter of 25th March, 1954 and am glad
to know that both you and your wife are enjoying good health.
As regards your remarks about entry visas into Iraq, while it
is really difficult to get an entry visa for foreigner in some cases,
it is not so difficult to get visas for non Jews. Only a year ago
I had managed to get an entry visa into Iraq to a French lady teacher
from Paris who is still teaching in our school to her great satisfac-
tion. In your case, the best way would be to try & get a tourist visa
from any Iraqi Embassy abroad, & once you are in Baghdad the question
of your residence can be easily arranged by our school administration.
In the last resort, even if a tourist visa will not be granted to you
I can always manage to obtain visas for you from our end given a reason-
able period of time before your intended departure for Baghdad.
Conditions here are not as bad as you describe them to be. I
think that your outlook on this part of the world is unjustifiably
pessimistic. Do not forget that nowadays there is lack of stability
all over the world
As regards the terms of employment, in case you and your wife
would like to work in our school, I am enclosing, herewith, two copies
of a contract form written in French in which every side of the question
is clearly stated. I may add here that, having in the past worked with
us and for the Iraqi Ministry of Education, you are probably quite
aware of the fact that teaching in our school requires much more ear-
nest work on the part of the teacher, in the class-room as well as
outside. But the work in our school is, I believe, much more interesting.
We are after good results more than anything else. Unfortunately our
school budget does not permit us to offer to a foreign teacher a treat-
ment as liberal as is usually offered by the Iraq Government, and in
your case, I think, I shall have to do a lot of persuasion with our Lay
Council, who by the way have the final say in the matter, before gett-
ing their approval to sanction the scale of salaries I am suggesting in
the contract forms herein enclosed.
Hoping to hear from you as early as possible, I close with my
best regards to you and your wife.
Yours Sincerely,
⟦Abdullah⟧

Dear Mr. Metcalfe,
You would probably be interested to hear once again about
Bagdad and about the Shammash & Frank Iny Schools. In the last 18
months something of a revolution has taken place in the district where
our school is situated. The whole place is now dotted with small love-
ly villas surrounded with green gardens where it was a stretch of open
& dusty fields two years ago. As for Bagdad, it now boasts of the
most modern streets with clean side-pavements and long belts of green
trees & flowers in the middle. As for our school, there is more sta-
bility & better discipline now than when you last left us.
I learnt that your wife is now teaching somewhere near the
place where you are staying. I hope that her health is good.
I would like to mention that I am trying to recruit for the
next scholastic year, two good teachers, one a Britisher, for teaching
English, (G.C.E. level as well as lower levels), and another a French,
for teaching French literature & language, to coach our students for
the Certificat d'Etudes Primaires, the Brevet Elementaire, and the
G.C.E. exams. in French, advanced level. I wonder whether you and
Mrs. Metcalfe would like to consider filling two such posts at our
school. I shall be very glad to hear from you as early as possible
about this subject as I have decide about the choice of my staff for the
next academic year, before the summer vacation if possible.
In closing, I ask you please to convey my best regards to
your wife and accept the same to you.

I thank you for your letter of 12.1.54. I have just now
received in good condition the 8 parcels of books which you sent

you can very well substitute them with the encyclopedia of the same

volumes of Lizette, will you please replace them Semaine de Suzette.
