عزيزي ابو دانيال . لقد راجعني السيد فريد سمرة مؤخراً وطلب مني ان اكتب اليكم حول
بناية السيد فرنك عيني فيما يتعلق بقطع الارض المجاورة للمدرسة . إذ أن اللجنة ⟦الموقرة⟧
أخذت تفكر بصورة جدية بانشاء مدرسة باسم مدرسة مناحيم دانيال تضم بعض الصفوف المتوسطة
من مدرسة شمش الفرع التجاري المزمع فتحه في المستقبل . ونظراً لاهمية المشروع وضرورة انجازه بسرعة
فقد طلب السيد فريد سمرة إليّ ان اكتب لحضرتكم بان تتباحثوا مع السيد نزيك عيني بالموضوع وتنهوا
قضية بيع الارض للطائفة بسعرها الحالي بدون لزوم الالحاح على بيعها بسعر منخفض كما كانت
اللجنة مصرة عليه في الماضي . وإذا لم يتيسر لكم إقناع السيد فرنك عيني ببيع جميع القطع فحبذا لو أمكن
الاربع قطع المجاورة للمدرسة . اني بدوري ارجوكم ان تهتموا بالامر وتكملوا عملية البيع
على أي حال من الاحوال نظراً لاهمية المشروع وللغاية التي من أجله يطلب شراء الارض .

اخبرني السيد حبيب توفيق بان محروسكم صباح سوف يعود الى بغداد للاشتراك في امتحان القبول

With reference to our verbal conversation on Wednesday
30th May, concerning the granting of visas to the United King-
dom to graduates of my school for the purpose of studying in
British Universities, I wish to submit the following cases
for your kind consideration:
1. Mr. Joseph Haim Hakham David, has graduated from Shamash
Secondary School in June 1955. The Anglo-Jewish Association in
London made him an award for four years' scholarship to complete
his studies in the United Kingdom. He has already secured
admission to Battersea Polytechnic in London for the session
commencing September, 1956. His father, Hakham David, is a
landlord residing in Bagdad. He has already applied to the
Iraqi Authorities for his passport which he hopes to get
shortly.
2. Miss Dora Israel Kerkoukly, a graduate of my school in
June 1955, has, as far as I know, already secured admission
to London School of English for the session commencing Sept.,
1956. Her father, Israel Kerkoukly is also a landlord resid-
ing in Bagdad. She has also applied for her passport to the
Iraqi Authorities concerned.
3. Mr. Obadiah (Latif) Sasson Shohet, Mr. David Ezra
Dabby, Mr. Meir (Edmond) Ezra Shamoon and Mr. Latif Ibrahim
Shashoue have all sat for the Iraq State Baccalaureate Examina-
tion for Secondary Education at the beginning of this month.
The results of this examination are not yet out, but all four
students stand a good chance of passing. All four intend to
join Universities in the United Kingdom if they succeed in
securing admission to such Universities for the session commenc-
ing September 1956.
Hoping that the above information will prove helpful
for granting these students visas to the United Kingdom when
they apply for such visas, and thanking you for your valuable

I thank you for your letter dated 17th October and am pleased
to note from the Principal's report the present arrangements for
continuing to run the two advanced classes of the Shamash Secondary
School and I trust that these arrangements will continue for the
benefit of the pupils concerned. The other points listed in the
Principal's letter have been carefully noted and acknowledged in my
letter addressed to Mr. Salman Aboody dated 18th August last. I am
naturally anxious to do everything possible to ensure the smooth
running of the School and am of course prepared to co-operate with
you to this end. At the same time I have already pointed out to
Mr. Aboody that <del>⟦illegible⟧</del> the Shamash School Building itself and the properties
which comprise the Trust are very extensive and require continual
repairs and attention if they are to be maintained as they should be,
and I am anxious that they should on no account be allowed to fall
into decay through neglect or lack of adequate funds for maintenance
and repairs. However, in view of the contents of your letter and the
special request made to me by Mr. Salman Aboody to increase the annual
grant to a sum not exceeding ID.1300 per annum and have advised Mr.
Aboody accordingly to pay this sum in two equal instalments, the first
ID.650 on receipt of these instructions and the second being the
balance in February 1956, it being clearly understood that the above
sum of ID.1300 is in respect of the current academic year 1st October
1955 to the end September 1956.
I trust that having made this provision the Shamash Secondary
School classes will continue to benefit from the arrangements made
and that the coming year will be one of progress and achievement
reflecting credit on all concerned.

اسعد الله اوقاتكم . وبعد فقد جئت بهذا الكتاب اولا أسأل عن صحتكم وصحة عائلتكم عسى ان تكونوا
دوما بخير .
ان ما حدا بي ان اكتب لحضرتكم الآن هو الحرص على مصلحة المدرسة التي تكرمتم بتقديم بنائها وايقافها
لخدمة ابناء طائفتكم في بغداد . جزاكم الله خيرا على هذا العمل المجيد . هناك ثلاثة امور رأيت من
المصلحة مفاتحتكم بها :-
اولا - ان هناك بعض الترميمات والاضافات في تأسيسات المدرسة البنائية والكهربائية تتطلب الظروف اجراؤها بين
وقت وآخر حسب حاجات المدرسة والطلاب . ومن هذه الترميمات .
١ - تبليط ما يقارب الـ (٥٠٠) متر مربع من ساحات المدرسة كي يمكن لسيارات نقل الطلاب الوقوف والانتظار
فيها وقت الانصراف وذلك منعا للازدحام في الشارع في ايام المطر على الاخص وحفظا للاطفال من خطر
حوادث الدهس التي تعرضوا لها في الماضي . وهذه العملية تكلف حوالي الـ (٥٠٠/-) دينارا .
٢ - ان جميع التأسيسات الكهربائية في المدرسة غير صالحة للاستعمال في الوقت الحاضر . فقد حدث في
كثير من الاحيان خلال السنوات الثلاث الماضية ان تكهربت جدران بعض الصفوف مما عرض حياة الطلاب
للخطر . وقد ظهر بنتيجة فحص هذه التأسيسات من قبل الخبراء ان سلكها غير متقن وانه من الضروري
اجراء تغيير جذري فيها مما يكلف حوالي الـ (٧٥٠/-) دينارا .
٣ - وهناك مسرح القاعة يتطلب حوالي الـ (٢٥٠/-) دينارا كي يمكن جعله صالحا للتمثيل والخطابة من قبل
الطلاب ولا شك ان حضرتكم ممن يقدرون فعاليات الطلاب هذه حق قدرها كما هو ثابت ومعروف عن
شخصكم الكريم .
فيكون والحالة هذه مجموع المصروفات المستعجلة والضرورية للمدرسة حوالي الـ (١٥٠٠/-) دينارا .
ان ادارة الطائفة في بغداد ليس لديها من الموارد ما يسد هذه النفقات بالاضافة الى النفقات السنوية
الاخرى التي بلغت في الظروف الحالية حوالي الـ (١٨٠٠٠) دينارا بموجب الميزانية التي سبق لمدير
المدرسة السيد عبد الله عوبديا ان أطلع حضرتكم في العام الماضي عليها . هذا مع العلم ان مجموع
الاجور المجباة من الطلاب سنويا هي دائما اقل من ستة آلاف دينار . لذا جئت ارجو من حضرتكم
ان تساعدوا ادارة المدرسة على تلافي هذه الاحتياجات الضرورية لمدرستكم التي اصبحت في الوقت الحاضر
من المدارس المشهورة في البلد ان لم نقل من اشهر المدارس في بغداد التي اتصفت بامتياز مستواها
العلمي وبتربية طلابها وهيئتها التعليمية وحسن ادارتها . اذ قد كانت نتائج الامتحانات العامة
الوزارية (البكالوريا) للدراسات الثلاث الابتدائية والمتوسطة والاعدادية في مدرستنا أبهر من جميع المدارس
الاخرى الرسمية منها والأهلية .

بجميع المرافق الاخرى من مكتبة ومختبرات وقاعة الخ ... وقد تطلبت الظروف ان تحوي هذه المدرسة
في الوقت الحاضر طلاب (١٧) صفا من جميع الاعمار والأجناس، ابتداءا من الروضة الى الخامس الاعدادي ،
لقد اصبح من الضروري والحالة هذه استخدام المكتبة والقاعة والمختبرات كصفوف للطلاب مما حرم هؤلاء
الطلاب من كثير من مرافق الدراسة الضرورية بالاضافة الى ازدحام البعض منهم في بعض الغرف التي لا تصلح
كصفوف .
وقد قام مدير المدرسة السيد عبد الله عوبديا مؤخرا بوضع تصاميم ( Plans )
لبناء جناح اضافي في المدرسة مكون من صفين اضافيين ومختبرين كبيرين في الطابق السفلي مع مختبرين
اثنين احدهما للكيمياء ( Chemistry Laboratory ) والآخر للفيزياء (
Physics Laboratory ) في الطابق العلوي وسيرسل لكم هذه التصاميم كي تطلعوا عليها .
ونظرا لحاجة المدرسة الماسة لهذا المشروع الذي يعد جزءا متمما لمشروعكم الاصلي ارجو من حضرتكم
مع بقية افراد الطائفة في بغداد ان تتفضلوا بعين العطف لاخراجه الى حيز الوجود بأسرع وقت ممكن
وبهذا تكونون قد قمتم بأعظم اكبر مشروع خيري لابناء طائفتكم .
ثالثا — ان الصفين الاخيرين من المدرسة وهما الصف الرابع الاعدادي والخامس الاعدادي يحويان في الوقت الحاضر
عددا كبيرا من الطلاب بمستويات وقابليات علمية متفاوتة . وذلك مما اخذ يسبب مشاكل كبيرة في التدريس
حيث التوفيق بين الطلاب الاذكياء والطلاب الضعفاء الذين يحويهم صف واحد .
وقد فكرت رئاسة الطائفة واللجنة الادارية بعد المداولة مع مدير مدرستكم بأنجاز مشروع جديد وهو فتح
مدرسة اعدادية جديدة مكونة من صفين فقط تحوي نوعا متجانسا من الطلاب وذلك بالاضافة الى الصفين الاعدادي
الموجودين الآن في مدرستكم ، على ان يتم الصرف على هذا المشروع من اوقاف المرحوم عزرا مناحيم دانيال الذي
اشترط عند اجراء وقفه بناء مدرسة بأسمه .
ونظرا للحاجة الى الاقتصاد في التدريس لادارة هذه المدرسة الجديدة فقد فكرنا في شراء اوسع
قطع ارض من القطع الفضاء المجاورة لمدرستكم والعائدة لحضرتكم والتي تستعمل الآن كمخزن لمعملكم في بغداد
ففي هذه العملية يمكن اتمام فائدتين وهما — اولا — استخدام نفس المدرسين للقيام بالتدريس في المدرستين
لقربهما الواحدة من الاخرى — ثانيا — جمع طلاب مدارسنا في منطقة واحدة ليسهل نقلهم وللاستفادة من مرافق
المدرستين من قبل جميع الطلاب بآن واحد .
لذا نرجو ان تتفضلوا في هذا الامر ايضا بالسرعة الممكنة وتكلفوا من تنسبونه في بغداد لانجاز
معاملة البيع هذه وبذلك تكونون قد حققتم مشروعا جديدا لابناء طائفتكم تستحقون لأجله الشكر والثناء .

وبالاخير يسرني ان اخبركم بان مدرستكم اصبحت في الوقت الحاضر البناية الوحيدة الكبيرة للطائفة والتي
تؤدي خدمات النواحي الاجتماعية . ففي حفلة توزيع الجوائز على الطلاب المتفوقين التي اقامتها ادارة المدرسة
في العام المنصرم ضمت حديقة المدرسة ما لا يقل عن (١٢٠٠) شخص من من افراد الطائفة . وقد سبق ان
شهدت قاعة المدرسة حفلة زواج (قدوشيم) في الماضي ، ونؤمل ان تقام حفلات اخرى كالمحافظة في المستقبل .
كما ان عدد طلاب المدرسة اخذ في الازدياد منذ سنتين خاصة من بين الاطفال الذين يمثلون الجيل الجديد .
ومما لا شك فيه انه لولم تكونوا قد تبرعتم ببناء هذه المدرسة لكان وضع الطائفة في بغداد غير ما هو عليه الآن
ناحيتي الدراسة والحياة الاجتماعية . وهذا فضل لحضرتكم لا يمكن نسيانه .
وختاما ارجو ان لا يخيب املنا في اكمالكم للمشروع الذي بدأتم به وانكم سوف لا تتأخرون عن عمل كل ما من
شأنه خدمة المصلحة العامة لاعلاء سمعتكم الطيبة التي طالما تردد ذكرها بين افراد الطائفة عسى الله ان

Dear Sir,
With reference to our verbal conversation on Friday, 15th July, concerning the granting of visas to the United Kingdom to graduates of my School for the purpose of studying in British Universities and acting on your suggestion, I wish to submit for your kind consideration the following cases :
1. Mr. Emil Abdullah Battat, a graduate of this year, has obtained admission to Edgbaston School of Science, Birmingham, which he is to join in September next. His father, Mr. Abdullah Battat is the assistant manager, The Eastern Bank Ltd., Baghdad and, I suppose, is well known to the British Embassy.
2. Mr. Ivor Abdullah Dangoor, graduated from my School this summer and is expecting to join the Edgbaston School of Science also next September to which he has already secured admission. His case is exactly similar to that of Emil Battat. His father, Mr. Abdullah Dangoor, has been for a long time a broker for the Iraq Mercantile Ltd., a British firm in Baghdad. He is a business man of good reputation.
3. Mr. Abdullah Ibrahim Tarzi, had graduated from Shamash Secondary School in June 1953. The Anglo-Jewish Association in London made him an award for four years' Scholarship to complete his studies in the United Kingdom. He has already secured admission to Battersea Polytechnic in London for the session commencing September, 1955. His father, Mr. Ibrahim Tarzi is an ex-civil servant of the Iraq Government and now is on pension. One of his brothers, Dr. Nagi Ibrahim, is at present working with the Iraq Government in Kut Hospital. A second brother, Anwar Ibrahim by name, is engaged in business in Baghdad.
4. Mr. Ely Israel Hay, has graduated from my School in June this year. He was similarly awarded a Scholarship of four years by the Anglo-Jewish Association in London to complete his studies in the United Kingdom. His family in Baghdad consists, at the present, of his mother and elder sister who works as a clerk with the Levant Import and Commercial Company Ltd. His father died in Baghdad only last year. Mr. E. I. Hay has already secured admission to Nottingham University, England for the session commencing September, 1955. He has his elder brother and another sister studying in England in the same University at the present.
Both Mr. Tarzi and Mr. Hay, being sent to the United Kingdom on Scholarship basis, will be made to sign an agreement before they leave, according to which they will have to serve in the Jewish Community institutions in Iraq a number of years equal to the number of years of their studies.
The first two students, Emil Battat and Ivor Dangoor have already obtained their Iraqi passports with the permission to reside abroad for four years. The last two candidates, Abdullah Tarzi and

Ely Hay are about to finish the same formalities for getting their
Iraqi passports with the necessary permission to reside abroad for
the duration of their studies. All four students have, as far as I
know, already applied to H. B. M. Consul in Baghdad for visas to the
United Kingdom.

Dear Mr. Salman,
With reference to our meeting on the 8th July to examine the present position of Shamash Secondary School, I wish to affirm the findings that we have arrived at, summarized in the following points:

1. The Shamash School at the present comprises two Secondary Classes, namely, the Fourth Year and the Fifth Year groups. These two classes number about seventy students of both sexes.
2. At the end of the Fourth Year most of our students sit for the London University G.C.E. Examinations for which they are coached by qualified and efficient teachers during that year. At the end of the Fifth Year, which is the graduating year, our students sit for the Iraq State Baccalaureate Examination for Secondary Education, usually with notable success.
3. The Shamash School students are at the present accommodated at the Frank Iny School building, free of charge. As is well known this arrangement was made since the spring of 1951, when the students of all the community Schools were grouped in one building, namely, the Frank Iny School building at the request of the Ministry of Education. This arrangement is likely to continue for a long time to come.
4. Notwithstanding this, the Ministry of Education still recognizes the Shamash School as a separate institution by itself, known as the Shamash Secondary School, as distinguished from the Frank Iny School which forms the Primary and Intermediate Classes.
5. The Shamash School has a cadre of its own, although some of the teaching staff who are on the cadre of <del>⟦illegible⟧</del> the Frank Iny School do some teaching at the Shamash School as part of their job.
6. The Shamash School forms an essential and an integral part of our Educational System in Baghdad; and as you very well know, it draws its income partly from its Trust and partly from school fees paid by the students and partly from the Community Funds if and when available. Its expenditures for the year 1953/1954 and for the present academic year 1954/1955, amounted to I.D.3799.836 and I.D. 3955.599 respectively as is shown in the attached statements. As is clear from the first statement the yearly expenses of the School is about double as much as the yearly income it ordinarily draws from the Shamash School Trust. If a teacher for the English language is to be recruited for the School from abroad, which I hope will be done next year, the total yearly expenditure will be increased by another seven hundred and fifty Dinars.
