I request from your presence that you order someone from the association

R. S. DeSouza.
186/48 Ras-el-Karyah.
Baghdad, 1st Sept,1948.
To His Beatitude, The Chief Rabi.,
Baghdad.
Your Beatitude,
The purpose of my request for an interview, is to seek
Your Beatitude's assistance over a simple and yet a pretty delicate
matter and I hope that it will not be denied to me. In that hope I beg
to state that:-
1. In the year 1927, after considerable amount of trouble and expense
I had secured the Sole Agency of the Black and White cigarettes for
Iraq and Iran on most favoured terms and took <del>with</del> Mr Menashi Sofair
as a partner and Sole Distributor.
2. In the same year, however, myself and Muhami Yousif Elias Effendy
had decided to open a drapery store jointly, for which purpose I had
purchased a considerable amount of goods from that ill-fated Dalton
Vase and Coy., As my misfortune would have it he suddenly died of
heat stroke, leaving me alone to carry on this work independant⟦ly⟧
3. All the hard cash that I had was utilised in getting fresh supplies
and thus was unable to shoulder the two burdens, and just at this
time as Mr Soffair well knows that my two local brother-in-laws had
been giving me considerable amount of trouble for making the said Mr
"Soffair Sole Distributor."
4. Having been worried over the death of Yousif Elias, and having
been engaged by the court to complete the accounts of Bankrupt Co
of Dalton Vase, and other domestic reasons, I asked Mr Soffair to
take over this Agency in his name free of charge and at that time
it did not occur to me to reatain at least some % of interest.
5. After a period of three years, due to acute market conditions
and due to untold misery and trouble caused by my brother-in-laws
for giving away the agency to Mr Soffair I was reluctantly com-
pelled to close down my business with complete loss of capital. All
these troubles were caused to me due to weakness of my wife and her
brothers' influence over her.
6. To establish this Agency, I have lost over three thousand Rs, the
first 2 consignments were simply distributed free for propaganda
purposes and in addition I had spent large sums of moneys for news
paper advertising and all this money has been a waste and no gain.
7. Mr Soffair will definitely realise that but for me he would not
have had this agency, 2 and but for my friendship with him, also he
would not have had it.
8. My approach to your beatitude is not a complaint, but I beg to
point out that this agency is paying a return like that of the Oil
and it is only fair that in view of the circumstances explained, Mr
Soffair should annually pay me a bonus from the actual nett profits
of this Iraqi/Iranian Agency. I have myself not approached Mr Soffair
on this subject, this being a delicate subject I considered it most
wise to seek the present channel.
9. In conclusion I must admit that when I was in financial trouble
many times he and his son Elias have helped me, and I have no doubt
they will respond to this appeal of mine, especially taking into
consideration, the complete ruination wrought on me by my two bro-
ther-in-laws on account of loosing this agency. ⟦...⟧ Soffair knows.
10. The famous Oil me⟦...⟧ was given ⟦...⟧ the A.I.O.C a
5% interest for ⟦...⟧ concession and has it upto an
indefinite time.
⟦...⟧ for any ⟦...⟧ stance ⟦...⟧ rence ⟦...⟧ thank your beatitude
