Our dear student sons
Today, the Arab nation celebrates in all its regions a painful anniversary, which is
the anniversary of the ill-fated Balfour Declaration, which was the beginning of the great tragedy
of the Zionist colonial aggression against dear Palestine. And it was
that the celebration of this anniversary became an incentive to close ranks and unify
the word and strengthen the bonds of cooperation and solidarity among the sons of the Arab
homeland in all fields of public life to consolidate the principles of
truth and justice, spread the banner of science, raise the torch of culture, and build
a new generation that receives its full share of civilization and progress and contributes
to the liberation of its usurped land and to achieving revival and prosperity
for its dear homeland by all means and capabilities.
The establishment of the National Union of Iraqi Students was among
these means, given the lofty goals it aims for
to consolidate the pillars of national unity by undertaking the duties
required by the precious homeland from its students, the men of the future,
and spreading the spirit of sincerity, affection, and harmony throughout its regions
and fighting colonialism with the weapon of modern science, high culture,
and high technical efficiency.
As we bless these goals for the benefit of our nation
and its progress, we sincerely recommend to our dear student sons that
they keep in mind, in all circumstances and conditions, the necessity of

Eagerness to perform their educational and cultural duties to the fullest
extent, and considering our directives ⟦+⟧ and instructions in the place of parental
advice for them, and considering their school in the place of their affectionate mother,
this school, which has become, thanks to what has been spent on its behalf
of efforts and funds, a living ideal model for order and academic
standards, especially the authentic cooperation existing between the students,
the administration, and the teaching staff—this cooperation which
we hope for its continued growth and prosperity, wishing that it remains at
all times a beacon that illuminates for our student sons under the shade of their national union,
and their constant urging toward everything that brings them good and success, activating
this slogan which has become one of the foundations of modern education
with its aim of maintaining order, and avoiding slipping
behind everything that conflicts with the real interests of the students. In truth,
wandering ideas away from their academic and cultural future, and those driven
to restlessness in the ⟦sections⟧ ⟦...⟧ to be absent from attendance
without any justification, and objecting to administrative matters,
and interfering in what does not concern the students in any way, and refusing to comply,
and placing obstacles in the face of the administration and its instructions, and creating problems
and disturbances ⟦...⟧ for their violation of school systems and laws,
and turning away from study and achievement by being preoccupied with what is not beneficial

To the respected teacher, Miss ⟦Liu'i⟧
Greetings and respect,
I had asked our daughter Lam'an, regarding the history exam for the months of
April and May, only one question which is (What is the benefit of food for humans?)
And a grade of (4) was given for this question according to what appeared in the list of grades.
Therefore, we request an answer to it according to the history book, which is (Ancient Man for the Third
Primary Grades) or according to your preference so that she may learn it in the future and be
according to your assessment. Thank you in advance.
Sincerely,

Baghdad on 2/29/56
Dear Mr. Abdullah Ouba, Respected
After greetings,
Today I took the opportunity to fulfill your request regarding the cinematic films, and I apologize
for my delay due to my tight schedule.
The first thing in requesting films is that you write a list of film names on a piece of paper
and have it signed either by the stadium management or the school as follows:
"We thank you for the films you provided us with last week; the scenes of the film
named so-and-so were beautiful, joyful, clear, and its subject was ⟦educational⟧ and .... and the ⟦other⟧ film so-and-so enabled us to see
the conditions of the United States of America in terms of culture and etc... (And if there was a film or
more than these whose images were not clear or its sound was faint and unclear, inform them of it while writing the name of the film as follows:)
The film so-and-so, its sound was intermittent five minutes after it started (or in its middle or at its end or all of it) which did not
allow us to enjoy it etc. etc. ... (likewise, if the film was torn or cut in some of its parts, they must be informed)
And we hope to be provided with the following films: 1- .... 2- .... (in each request the films should not exceed four)
In the event that one or more of the films mentioned above are not available, we hope to replace them with any of the
following films 1- .... 2- .... etc. (and you may mention more than four backup films)
The films must be kept for one week from the date of receipt, and if it happens that they are delayed a second
week, the (Film Department) in the American Information Service must be informed personally to extend the duration of the films for a second
week, and the ⟦specialized⟧ person receives the extension paper. Likewise, if a delay occurs for a third week.
Upon returning the films each time after the screening, a paper must be attached after filling in its fields,
which is printed by the American Information Service and can be requested from the "Film Department" when it runs out, as well as when
returning British films, the mentioned papers can be requested from the Film Department. It is advisable to write
(To be continued)

Page 340

⟦line⟧ 2 ⟦line⟧
The notes opposite each ⟦illegible⟧ teacher's name on the same sheet where the space is.
This, and I hope to be relieved of the responsibility for the cinema for the guests, whether it takes place in the stadium or in the school, and as I see,
it is advisable to move the cinema equipment to the school so that students can enjoy watching movies as well.
Finally, I would like to express my opinion on our school which I left... many questions revolve in my mind without
an answer after I became acquainted with the outside world in terms of culture, and I noticed that our school is the first of its kind in
Iraq in various aspects... but where is the encouragement of the extra-curricular spirit, the development of students' talents, and the utilization
of their activities, refining them and directing them correctly so that they benefit others and themselves at the same time and as early as possible
the school from this aspect.. I wonder, does materiality have a strong direct influence (knowing that the school is not poor) or
are there personal agendas preventing consideration of this subject??? and let us not forget that this aspect ⟦illegible⟧
requires Herculean efforts and an untiring strong determination and a great broad mind to manage and lead this aspect...
And I am sure that these qualities exist in one person in the school.. and at any time different student committees are formed
working for culture and sports, and students are lowered into them with the support of the educated teachers who have a spirit of progress.
I have learned that an English teacher ⟦Hallan⟧ has knowledge in such subjects.. I wonder, was he asked for his opinion??
And when will a committee be formed to oversee the films, their selection, coordinating the screening, and critiquing them etc... ?? And at what time
will some teachers treat the students as their brothers, teaching for the sake of knowledge not for materiality, and broadening their culture for benefit and use??
And why all this exhaustion in lessons which is beyond capacity, making the students bored with the lessons ⟦illegible⟧
from the administration and the school and lashing out with their sharp tongues at them... and why all this cramming of lessons which makes the times
of self-recreation narrow or completely non-existent?? and which makes the times of extra-curricular culture completely
non-existent?? .. I wonder, are students humans or machines?? and is the mind completed by filling it with all these lessons all at
once and in one day, and digesting them scientifically and practically?? and do the students have the same ability and diligence in school lessons??
And until when will they continue to only memorize lessons like parrots, making them understand nothing but what is in the book and that superficially
only, so they can free themselves for the dozens of books waiting for their turn without understanding them all and digesting them scientifically and practically, making
the students take pleasure in following the lessons without interruption; for that I hope the principal will verify the truth of my words yourself
- to be continued -

Page 341

⟦illegible⟧
You can ask intellectual questions about the lessons and you will see the result ⟦line⟧
This is my opinion, although I am still in the stage of growth and progress... and I am sure of its correctness, because I have
extracted it from a group of different opinions, whether they were the opinions of businessmen or some teachers who are loyal
to the students or students from
With this, please accept my highest respect.

Note: - The play announced for performance will be a complete failure, unless
the student actors cooperate with the director, such as mastering the director's notes, and in everything.
It is strange that <del>⟦illegible⟧</del> all the roles of the female students - at the present time - that they perform are (cold)
very much, and it is noticeable that they deliver their roles like reciting memorized texts without the required
movements. It is advisable to bring back the former female students, even by putting pressure on them, to perform
their previous roles, such as Afidun Solayi and others, because they mastered their roles
- from the rehearsal - perfectly, especially in movements along with delivery, which are the most important
thing in the art of acting. Peace.

Mr. Rouben E. Heskel,

Dear Sir,
In reply to your letter of 4th February 1958, concerning exemption from School fees, I would like to inform you that the School policy during the last few years has been to charge full fees those who can afford to pay irrespective of the number of children they have at school, taking into consideration the fact that the cost of education per pupil in this School amounts to about more than twice of the full fees.
While the administration always expects well-to-do parents to contribute to the welfare of the School by paying at least the cost of education of their children in full if not more, we have always in the past considered the exemption from fees, either wholly or partially, cases of which we were satisfied they were deserved cases on financial grounds.
Yours sincerely,

To the honorable Mr. Meir Rubin, respected.
Your son Haron from the second primary grade is a very
active student and misbehaves and fears no one and has bothered the school administration
repeatedly and does not care about reprimand or punishment and he behaves in ways whose
consequences are feared; therefore we request your help in urging him to be calm, otherwise we
will be forced despite his young age to expel him temporarily from the school
as a discipline for him and for those like him who disrupt order, noting that
he is negligent in all his lessons and is threatened with failure as the complaints
from the teachers about him are continuous.
