These are archival documents from the Ḥevrah Ḳadishah, the Burial Society, in Baghdad. Included is the 1956 annual budget. There is a request from the head of the Burial Society for financial support from the community at large. He presents records of its annual income and expenses, including lists of people who passed away: names, dates, and cost of burial. The lists have three categories of payment: self paid, minimum paid, and free burials for the poor. Also included are three pamphlets. One is in Judeo-Arabic and is the annual report for the Burial Society. This reports discuss the budget and other items of note: one member of the community, a German doctor who escaped Nazi Germany, paid more than the average fee; members of the community who could not pay for a funeral had funerals paid for by the Ḥevrah Ḳadishah but there was a deficit in 5710 (1949-1950) due to more funerals and higher costs of material; the Ḥevrah Ḳadishah asks for more funds from the Baghdadi Jewish community to cover these deficits.

- 3 - In addition to the fact that the association performs its work regularly and prepares and shrouds the dead immediately without delay, and does not receive the costs for that except after a few days, when it sends one of its employees to receive it. From the above, it is clear to you that the noble work performed by this association deserves to receive your encouragement and support, as without this the association cannot continue its work because the amounts received by the association, which were generously provided by your magnanimity and zeal, did not meet its requirements needed to cover the expenses of the first two categories above, because the death rate of these two categories is equivalent to 90% of the total deaths. Below we list for your information a summary of the association's revenues and expenditures up to September of the year 5709. ♦♦♦♦ Our honorable brothers, sons of the Israelite community Duty dictates that we present to you annually a clear picture of the account of revenues and expenses of the Hebra Qadisha Society and a brief summary of the progress of its work in preparing and shrouding the dead from the sons of the community and the management of these affairs and the matters resulting from them which were among the difficulties that the individuals of our community faced before the formation of this society, so that every individual of the honorable community can look into these affairs and understand the importance and vitality of this sacred project and express their opinions and suggestions in this regard, which meet with the society's welcome in service of the public interest. Why was this society formed? ⟦line⟧ It is not hidden from a large number of the community's sons the many problems and difficulties they faced before the formation of this society, as the matter of preparation and shrouding was confined within a narrow scope among some individuals who acted according to their whims, which used to provoke complaints and pain especially among poor families, who were shedding tears and making pleas to deliver their dead to their final resting place. This painful situation generated jealousy and enthusiasm in the hearts of some zealous members of the community to establish this society, and indeed it was established thanks to the deliberations that took place with the leadership of the Israelite community and Their Eminences the members of the Spiritual Council, as the matter of preparation and shrouding from the religious point of view belongs to the Rabbis only, and this society was officially authorized by the venerable Ministry of Interior. It began to play its great role in preparing and shrouding the dead of various classes in the following manner: 1 - Preparing and shrouding the dead of the poor and homeless for free. 2 - Preparing and shrouding the dead of the needy in exchange for small assistance that does not cover half the expenses. 3 - Preparing and shrouding the dead of the middle class and receiving the costs thereof without increase or decrease. 4 - Preparing and shrouding other dead and receiving what the magnanimity of their relatives provides in excess of the costs to cover the expenses incurred by the society as stated in the first and second items above.

Explanatory Memorandum Our Dear Brothers It is clear to you from the statement presented that most of the amounts collected from the relatives of the deceased did not cover 25% or 30% of the amounts borne and spent by the association on them, especially given the rise in prices of necessities such as Rizeh linen (which is only imported from Turkey), calico, soap, workers' wages, car supplies, and other items, compared to what they were before the Second World War, by a ratio of four or five times what they were previously. Moreover, the association has never previously demanded these costs at the time of death, but rather leaves it until several days after the incident, helping their families through the confusion that prevails in those critical moments.
