To the Honorable President of the School Relief Committee
After greetings, with reference to your letter dated the 18th of this month, it is not hidden from you that as a result of the discussion that
took place jointly between us and the members of your esteemed committee and the Mutual Committee to take the decision to build the Rifka
Nooriel School, an agreement was reached to secure the amount of money first so that the aforementioned construction could begin. As for
your request to entrust the construction matter to a joint committee of Council members and members of your committee, the Council has approved that
and has appointed from its side the knowledgeable one of its members, Mr. F. Ibrahim Gurji, to fulfill the required duty. Furthermore,
the map for this school, which is with the Council, was sent to you at the time with your man Meir Shamash. This,

To the Honorable Chairman of the Schools Relief Committee
After greetings and in response to your letter dated the 24th, the Nuriel and Haron Saleh schools did not have allocations
from the community fund, but in order to maintain them, the Council began to support them from its fund, charged against their share of
the Nuriel Endowment. We requested the Director of the Alliance Schools some time ago to submit the annual budget for the two mentioned schools
so that we may see what measures must be taken to support them through the allocation method despite our fund's tightness; but with great regret,
the aforementioned budget was not received from the said director until a few days ago, so we paid him for that on the 22nd
five thousand rupees 5000/00 as a special measure before any other institution. What the said director means by his letter to you
is a request for you to pay him ⟦half⟧ the amount of rupees that was decided to be paid from your honorable committee's fund on the date of
November 15, 925; and he has already received 6000/00 rupees from you and 700/00 rupees remain for him. Therefore, we request that you pay
him seven hundred rupees 700/00, charged against the mentioned 6000/00 rupees decided to be paid gradually to the Nuriel
and Haron Saleh schools. With utmost respect, yours truly,

"Literary Reform Committee"
Baghdad March 14, 1926
To the Honorable School Aid Committee
Greetings and respect. We, the members of the Literary Reform Library, have decided to perform the play "Le Cid"
or "Love and Revenge" by the French poet "Le Cid" "Corneille" along with a comedic act
"The Philosopher" by "Moliere" on the upcoming Easter holiday.
The actors have mastered the play and learned the roles and necessary cues for it. However, it is not possible
for the library board to perform this play if we do not find sufficient funds to help us
complete this project of ours. Since the goal of our library is the reform of literature, based on performing this play
to help the students of the Lura Yael school and also to help our library, the following conditions apply:
First - Payment of all expenses incurred by the aforementioned library board for the play. They are as follows: payment of
rent for a month in rupees and payment of the salary for the consulate language teacher for a month in rupees, totaling rupees.
Second - Payment to Hadouri Effendi Shahrbani rupees for assisting us in arranging the stage and all matters
related to the performance of the play. 100
Third - All expenses imposed by the library board must be paid, except for the expenses mentioned in the first
and second articles.
Fourth - The costumes purchased shall be the property of the library and are considered part of the general expenses.
Fifth - After general expenses, 80 percent shall go to the school and 20 percent to the library.
Sixth - If the play is performed a second time, the aforementioned Hadouri Effendi must be paid rupees for arranging the stage.
50
Seventh - For the actors and the rest of the library board, numbering 16, we give them free tickets, which is 1 for each person.
Eighth - Entry tickets must be stamped with the library's seal.
On behalf of the library board

Mr. President.
I have the honor to send you herewith a copy of a letter that
I sent today to the Consistory regarding the Aaron
Saleh and Nouriel schools.
As this letter is the fourth that I have sent and as the Consis-
tory has the habit of not responding or responding very late
to the communications made to it, I have taken the liberty of sending you
a copy of the last one, dated today, with a request to do on your
part what is necessary for the payment, before the holiday, of the balance of your
subsidy to the two aforementioned schools for this semester, ⟦namely Rs. 700.⟧
The Consistory has ceased all its advances to these two institutions
since the start of the school year. This means that the staff has not yet received
their salary for December 1925. This irregularity in the payment
of salaries is naturally not without causing great preju-
dice to the smooth running of the schools; for it is impossible to ask
the staff for devotion and accuracy if the Management itself
itself does not show great punctuality towards them in
the fulfillment of its duties. And the payment of salaries
is, undoubtedly, one of the strictest.
Be that as it may, I appeal to your kindness and to all
the interest you take in these two schools to pay us the balance
which remains outstanding with you from the amount of your subsidy to these
schools for this semester.

Mr. President
I have not had the opportunity to write to you, following the
Passover holiday, to acknowledge receipt of your check for Rs 700
as a subsidy for our popular schools and to thank you for it
in due time. I beg you to excuse me.
Thanks to your kindness we were able to pay before the holiday a
portion of the back salaries of our teachers at the Aaron Saleh
and Nouriel Schools. In this way these poor fathers of families were able to spend their
holiday without much hardship.
I want to hope that the Consistory will finally begin to study a
report that I submitted to it on the current and future situation of these
two schools to discuss the conclusion and definitively make a
decision. Today, with all the reforms introduced, we do not know
where we are going nor in what manner we will be able to balance the budget
of these two schools.
Be that as it may, your assistance in these difficult circumstances
has been precious to us and I cannot express my gratitude to you
enough.
Please accept, Mr. President, the expression of my devoted
sentiments.

You say that this is a "gross" insult that I have inflicted
on your Committee.
Allow me, Mr. President, ⟦/ to⟧ always maintain this conviction
that the dignity of your committee is serious enough and placed high enough
to have been able to find an offense in this banal fact of not having
been officially called to accompany the High Commissioner in his
tours of our classes. As for the word "gross", I beg you to
retract it, as this word has no place in a courteous exchange of expla-
nations between people who respect each other and who are all attached, with
equal devotion, to the same work of communal interest.
I see no rudeness on my part, any more than an offense to your
colleagues on the Committee. Allow my sincerity to say that I see in
your letter expressions and a tone that are in no way appropriate
to the circumstances. <del>They</del> They could have been of a nature to undermine
the high esteem I hold for your Committee, if I did not wish
to consider above all your devoted activity and the eminent services
you have rendered to our schools.
Please accept, Mr. President, the expression of my
distinguished sentiments.

Mr. President
I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your letter of
June 29th last.
The visit of H. Exc. The High Commissioner to our schools did not
involve any official ceremony and, in fact, no reception
was organized for this purpose. Sir Sassoon, whom I had seen beforehand,
had formally advised me against doing ⟦a⟧nything that would have
taken away from this visit its essentially educational character.
Messrs. Zlouf and Cohen had been invited before my interview with Sir
Sassoon and I am happy to see that your distinguished secretary,
Dr. Rosenfeld, was also among them in his dual capacity
as a member of the Central Committee and secretary of your Committee.
I am one of those who most highly appreciate the precious
collaboration of your Committee in our educational work and who
recognize its excellent results. I have never failed to
express my gratitude to you whenever the opportunity has
presented itself. And, you have had the opportunity to see that in our school
ceremonies, evenings, theatrical festivals or others, your Committee is the
first invited and that even among all our guests, it is reserved
a place of honor.
I therefore infinitely regret that you have taken as an offense
the fact that your Committee was not officially invited to attend
the visit of the High Commissioner.

Dr. Jos. Rosenfeld
Baghdad.
Doctor,
In response to your esteemed request
to establish a subscription list in favor of the needy
schools of our community, I have deployed all that
is in my power to collect a fairly round sum
that might help you even a little in your works.
But, to my deep regret, I can tell you that given the
extreme hardship in which most of our employees find themselves,
I was only able to obtain the sum of 35/- Rupees which I
remit to you herewith as well as a list of the subscribers.
Wishing you full success for
the support of your humanitarian works, I beg you to
believe me, Doctor, your very devoted.
