Monsieur le President,
Nous avons l'honneur de vous confirmer notre
lettre du 10 Fevrier dernier et nous vous envoyons sous pli séparé le
nouveau plan de la construction de l'Ecole Nouriel pour être approuvé.
Notre Comite a du malheureusement arrêter pour le moment
son travail à cause de la forte crise économique qui sevit à Bagdad, qui
vient d'être aggravée par 3 grosses faillites parmi nos notables coreli-
gionnaires au total de près de 2 millions de roupies.
De plus il y a 4 a 5 jours à cuase des innondations du Tigre
les eaux ont envahi les grands dépôts de transit de la douane , et ce
sont encore nos commercants juifs qui perdent plusieurs milloins de
rupies ( les degats ne sont pas encore exactement évalués) . Dans la
situation actuelle il ne nous est pas possible de poursuivre notre
souscription en ville en faveur de la reconstruction de l'Ecole Nouriel
et c'est avec anxiété que nous attendons les réponses à nos lettres d'appel
lancées à nos compatriotes residant à l'étranger.
Suivant le devis dressé par l'architecte la construction
devra couter dans les 22000 rupies . Le solde net en notre caisse, est
aujourd'hui de 7000 rupies apres deduction des 6000 rupies votées pour
les ecoles Nouriel et Haron Saleh pour cette annee.
Nous ne voyons pas la possibilité de pouvoir commencer la
construction cet été, pour avoir l'école prête à la rentree d'Octobre
prochain, à moins que des dons inattendus nous parviennent de l'exter-
ieur . Nous ne doutons pas que le Comité Central voudra bien voter un
secours special à la dite construction, pour encourager notre Comite
et pour nous donner la possibilite de commencer le travail.
Notre Comite a decidé de ne construire que 6 classes , soit
l'aile Sud Ouest, dans le<del>s</del> cas où il n'arrive pas à collecter le montant
néccessaire à la construction entière qui se compose de 8 pièces.

tres haute consideration.

The Jewish Schools of this City have in recent years developed
considerably both in scope and efficiency. They now contain a total of ab-
out 7000 pupils and the demand for new admissions is as great as ever. This
development has absorbed all the public resources of the Community and
necessitated a call forfunds from private sources.
In view of the extensive needs involved our Committee has been cons-
tituted with the special object of putting forth what efforts are possible
to readjust the financial situation of the Schools and to procure the means
of extending them in proportion to the urgent need of the Jewish population
Subscriptions have been opened and all members of the Community resident
here or abroad were asked to extend to us a helping hand and materially
assist us in the attainment of the ideals that we are forming for this Com-
munity's progress through efficient and widely diffused education.
We beg now to turn our call to you as one of the members of this Com-
munity of whom we have reason to be most proud. Though absent from this
country for a long time, your memory is always alive among us, kept up as it
is by the news which we constantly receive of your extensive plilanthropic
works abroad. We venture

Notre Comité dans sa séance du 26 avril
dernier, d'accord avec Mr Menachi Gandji qui y assistait
et qui représentait le Consistoire a décidé de commencer
la construction de l'Ecole Nouril avec l'argent se trouvant
actuellement en caisse, en attendant que les formalités du
Leg Daof soient achevées ou que d'autres sommes d'argent
nous parviennent. Il a été décidé à cet effet par de faire
des retraits de deux mille rupes de l'Eastern Bank
et de les déposer chez un Saraf à la disposition du Comité
de la Construction pour le règlement des achats de
materiel et le payement journalier des ouvriers.
Nous vous remettons ci-joint un chèque de 2000 R.
à signer à l'ordre de Mr Levi Abood auquel la
Commission de Construction s'adressera pour les petits payements.
Nous vous annonçons en même temps avec plaisir que le travail a déjà
commencé depuis le 3 courant sous la surveillance
de l'Ingenieur architecte Mr ⟦Domb⟧ et le contrôle
de Mr Menachi Gandji.

On the 4th November last this Committee instructed me to address
to you an appeal for contributions in support of our Schools. A reply was
received from the Secretary of Sir Jacob Sassoon's Charities Trust to the
effect that all funds at the disposal of the Trust were concentrated on
local charities. We beg to state that we meant our letter as a personal
appeal to you which we now venture to reiterate. The financial situation of
our Schools is now particularly critical and this Committee finds itself
compelled to make every effort to meet the necessary payments. Among other
works of importance, a school which has fallen into ruin is now being
reconstructed and for this immediate purpose a sum of about Rs. 9000/- is
required. We hope that you will kindly give sympathetic attention to our
appeal and that you will contribute a generous share in this humanitarian
work.

which is the trait of all disinterested and sincere men. Yet, when
an opportunity occurs to show your appreciation of my Committee,
by asking them to meet distinguished visitors to the Schools, you
have grossly slighted these honourable gentlemen, and made them
suffer an indignity which they do not deserve. It is a poor way
of thanking them for what they have done, and proves that you hold
them in no esteem.
Therefore as President of the Schools Relief Committee
I demand an explanation of this lack, not only politeness, but
courtesy towards my Committee.
I am not sure if the Presidents of the Consistoire
and Schools Inspection Committee condone such a remissness, and in
order to bring the matter to their notice I am sending them a copy

Dear Sir ,
At a meeting of my Committee held Monday 28th June ,
I was requested to write and ask you to state in writing the
reason why my Committee was not asked to meet the High Commission⟦er⟧
when he paid an official visit to the Alliance Schools lately.
After due enquiry I learn that strangers were invi-
ted to meet His Excellency, also representatives of the Consis-
toire, The Inspection Committee and others, and yet my Committee
was entirely disregarded.
I am to point out to you that My Committee feel this
affront very keenly, and I myself think that an explanation is
due as to the reason why they should have been so disparaged.
My Committee is a properly constituted body, duly
appointed by the Consistoire, and recognised by the Community.
The Alliance Israelite, whose servant you are, the Consistoire,
and the Schools Committee, look to my Committee to help them out
of financial difficulties, and I flatter my Committee so far as
to say that they have helped the Community very much.
The gentlemen serving on my Committee give a lot of

نقدم لاطلاع المجلس الموقر صورة حساب واردات ومصروفات هذه اللجنة الى حد
تاريخه ويظهر منها <del>ان مجموع الواردات قد بلغت</del> ⟦illegible⟧ مدرسة صرف منها اننا قد صرفنا
على بناء مدرسة لوريل ٧٤٤٦ ربية <del>حيث اننا قد صرفنا على انشاء اربع غرف</del> واننا عازمون
على اكمال ست غرف ثلاث في الطابق التحتاني وثلاث في الطابق الفوقاني مع غرفة للمدير
اننا قد اكملنا بناء ثلاث التي تحت ⟦ويجوزنا⟧ الآن على الوقف ارض الوقف بناء الثلاث
الغرف الفوقانية وغرفة المدير بحيث ان هذا القسم بالطريق يكون حاضراً لقبول
الطلاب في السنة المقبلة ولما كان من المقدر الآن نظراً الى ضوء الاحوال تدارك
هذه الدراهم بالسرعة اللازمة ونظراً الى ضرورة اكمال البناء فقد قرر
الدراسة المفصلة ⟦طالب⟧ ذلك من توفر اجار سنة لمدرسة لوريل وحصل
نرجو من المجلس الموقر ان يوافق على تسليفنا اربعة آلاف ربية لمواصلة البناء
بغير تأخير وهذا المبلغ اننا نتعهد ان نسدده تدريجياً من اول واردات تأتي
الى اللجنة دون كل صرف آخر .
