To the Honorable
Ministry of Justice
I, Isaac Shamil Kashi, residing in the Torah neighborhood, in my capacity as guardian over my daughter Simha, a mature virgin aged
twenty years, had contracted her marriage six years ago to Yehuda bin Shaul Haron Yehuda,
who now resides in the airport area. The dowry for the girl was the sum of fourteen thousand dirhams in her name, and she was equipped
with the sum of 15,000 fifteen thousand at the time. The aforementioned Yehuda took from me in cash the sum of three thousand dirhams on account,
calculated against the amount I allocated for my daughter, his aforementioned fiancée Simha, for what was mentioned above. I completed
the prescribed trousseau and prepared everything necessary six years ago, but Yehuda delayed the wedding and marriage.
So I approached the sectarian court and litigated with him for a year until I obtained a judgment through
my agent Ephraim Hakham Isaac from the side of the Hakham Bashi. It was decided that the aforementioned Yehuda
shall pay the sum of three thousand dirhams which he had received from me, and that he shall pay a monthly alimony for his betrothed Simha
from the date the lawsuit was filed against him at the Hakham Bashi. However, it was not long before the aforementioned Hakham and his colleagues
obstructed the judgment they had issued due to certain interventions, and they are still procrastinating today
in the lawsuit for years until now. I request the issuance of an order to settle our lawsuit according to right and law.

We are sending you herewith a copy of the petition submitted to us by Shaul Aaron,
the agent for his son Yehuda, for your review of its contents and to state the truth of the matter.
Minister of Justice
My Lord the Hakham
I am very sorry that objections are pouring down upon the
Israelite Spiritual Court like torrential rain
from the father of the secretary of the Israelite community administration

The Petitioner

Copy of the petition submitted to this Ministry on October 24, 1928
by ⟦Shaul⟧ Harun Yehuda.
Representation:
My client, my son Yehuda, ⟦six⟧ years ago became engaged to Simha, the daughter of Isaac Kashi, on the
condition that her dowry be 11,000 rupees, a deferred dowry of 3,000 rupees, and clothing as per the current custom of 8,000
rupees, totaling twenty-two thousand rupees. My client sent her jewelry in the amount of one thousand five hundred rupees.
When he requested the fulfillment of the conditions and the marriage of the girl, she refused to fulfill the conditions. Accordingly, my client approached
the Israelite court three years ago, and the trial lasted a long time. As for the jewelry that he had sent to the girl,
at his request, they were placed in the safe of the aforementioned court and under its decision on the condition that they would not be given except as a result of
the final judgment. Upon the conclusion of the trial, the court decided that he should divorce her and return three thousand rupees to her,
which he had taken as a gift. As for all the expenses that my client had incurred, they would be borne by the girl
because she did not fulfill the conditions. My client proved 2,900 rupees in expenses that he had spent, including the value
of the jewelry at one thousand five hundred rupees and expenses of one thousand four hundred rupees. The court's decision was that after
presenting the jewelry in the presence of the court panel and after the girl's attendance to receive the divorce papers, the jewelry
would be given to her. However, despite the decision given by the aforementioned court and the legal rulings, and without
my knowledge or consent, and before the presentation of the jewelry and before the girl's attendance to receive the divorce papers, I do not know for what
stated reasons they gave the jewelry to the girl's father, Isaac Kashi. Whenever I approach the court to
return the jewelry to the court safe and appraise it and complete the trial and bring the girl to receive
the divorce papers according to their given decision, they attempt to evade it. Ultimately, the girl claimed that the jewelry was lost,
and the court is assisting her. I pray for an order to be given to return the jewelry to the safe and complete the case according to
the court's decision and bring the girl to receive the divorce papers, at which time the jewelry shall be given to her. The matter is yours to decide.

Through the Notary Public of Baghdad
To His Excellency the Acting Hakham Bashi of the Jewish Community in Baghdad, Respectfully
It is not hidden from your presence.
On the date of 22 Ab 688, corresponding to 8 August 1928, there was placed in your presence
a check in the amount of three thousand rupees as a trust, by the Jewish Spiritual Court on the
mentioned date. In view of the case file concerning me under number 244, the mentioned amount
is a payment from my private late dowry (Mu'akhar). Therefore, based on the understanding that my father Eliyahu Yehuda
Twayq intends to refer to your presence so that he may mislead you and take the mentioned check, while you are aware that -
the aforementioned court placed the mentioned check as a trust with you pending the outcome of the lawsuit.
Therefore, I notify you that it is not permissible for your presence to hand over the check to my father -
the mentioned Eliyahu, since the mentioned check belongs to me based on the court's decision, and in -
the opposite case, I will be forced to file a lawsuit against you and resort to legal methods, and then you will be guarantors for
the mentioned amount, i.e., three thousand rupees, along with the court costs, lawyer's fees, and the notification fee.
In order for you to be fully informed, we have issued this warning.

His Excellency the Honorable Minister of Justice.
The Petition.
The petitioner, a month ago, approached the Israeli Spiritual Court in Baghdad
so that they may grant a decree of recalcitrance (nushuz) against my husband, the named Moshe Shimon Abd al-Nabi, and the court
referred to has been procrastinating from day to day. On August 23, 1928, the court
referred to informed us that its ruling on my recalcitrance would not be issued until after fifteen days. Since I, in full
possession of my mental faculties, maturity, and consent, have confessed before the court that I am recalcitrant and have authorized my aforementioned husband
Moshe to marry a second woman over me, and furthermore, I have submitted a petition in my own handwriting -
and with my signature, which is kept in the lawsuit file No. 244, stating my recalcitrance. Since
my husband [wishes] to marry another woman, how can the court justify delaying the judgment and the torment of repeated follow-ups
⟦...⟧ from this long period, which is contrary to the Mosaic legal text (Sha'arei Shvat
Chapter 77). Therefore, the petitioner first seeks refuge in God and then in your justice and mercy -
extended to all subjects, that you order the retrieval of a copy of the file and then issue the order for the judgment
of my recalcitrance. The matter is for the master of the command.

A Response to
The Jews of Iraq and Zionist Falsehoods
Professor colleague Yahya Qasim wrote an article in his newspaper (Al-Sha'ab) in which he addressed the situation of his Jewish brothers in Iraq and denied the accusations directed at them by some regarding their influence by Zionist propaganda. The Professor provided ridiculous evidence that, while perhaps excusable from non-lawyers, is unacceptable from a man who studied law and knows the strategies of legal attack and defense.
It is customary for a person to ward off an accusation against themselves and clear their name with definitive evidence that is beyond dispute, unless the Professor has appointed himself as their lawyer in exchange for a fee he received from them, not caring whether the case is lost or successful as long as he has collected his fee for it.
The Professor was unsuccessful to a large extent and has mired himself in a discussion from which it is difficult for him to emerge, no matter how skillful his defense. His Excellency said:
("In Iraq, our Jewish brothers, like all other subjects, enjoy all rights. Here are the important state positions and here is the country's economy, in which Jews participate on equal footing with their other Iraqi brothers.")
Had the Professor wished to say that the Jews have monopolized economic activities, he would not have missed the mark of truth, due to the tight plans they have devised which no one else masters. Despite this, this control has not lessened their obsession or their influence by Zionist movements.
The Professor says in the context of defense, textually:
("As for if a few people are found who do not feel this way towards Jewish citizens, they do not represent the Iraqi people. If this feeling infiltrates them sometimes, it is either because they are victims of ignorance or victims of some provocative acts carried out by a few of our Jewish brothers.")
The Professor has fallen in his speech from a great height into a deep abyss. If he were to return to himself and a few hired individuals who share his opinion, he would not find anyone but himself saying this; rather, he is driven by defense factors fueled by material gain. If the Professor had troubled himself with a referendum on this matter, he would have known that every Muslim and every Arab does not share this
view with him, unless they are outsiders to these two elements, in which case we have no concern for his defense or attack. Perhaps the phrase ("victims of ignorance") applies to the Professor himself perfectly; rather, it is tailored exactly to his size and stature. Our statement is supported by the speech delivered by Mr. Bevin last
night, as he made a categorical statement that the Jews want to form a Jewish state that gathers all the Jews of the world. He did not say a Zionist state. If the Jews are able—God forbid—to form a Jewish state in every sense of the word, would
