A Response to
The Jews of Iraq and Zionist Falsehoods
Professor colleague Yahya Qasim wrote an article in his newspaper (Al-Sha'ab) in which he addressed the situation of his Jewish brothers in Iraq and denied the accusations directed at them by some regarding their influence by Zionist propaganda. The Professor provided ridiculous evidence that, while perhaps excusable from non-lawyers, is unacceptable from a man who studied law and knows the strategies of legal attack and defense.
It is customary for a person to ward off an accusation against themselves and clear their name with definitive evidence that is beyond dispute, unless the Professor has appointed himself as their lawyer in exchange for a fee he received from them, not caring whether the case is lost or successful as long as he has collected his fee for it.
The Professor was unsuccessful to a large extent and has mired himself in a discussion from which it is difficult for him to emerge, no matter how skillful his defense. His Excellency said:
("In Iraq, our Jewish brothers, like all other subjects, enjoy all rights. Here are the important state positions and here is the country's economy, in which Jews participate on equal footing with their other Iraqi brothers.")
Had the Professor wished to say that the Jews have monopolized economic activities, he would not have missed the mark of truth, due to the tight plans they have devised which no one else masters. Despite this, this control has not lessened their obsession or their influence by Zionist movements.
The Professor says in the context of defense, textually:
("As for if a few people are found who do not feel this way towards Jewish citizens, they do not represent the Iraqi people. If this feeling infiltrates them sometimes, it is either because they are victims of ignorance or victims of some provocative acts carried out by a few of our Jewish brothers.")
The Professor has fallen in his speech from a great height into a deep abyss. If he were to return to himself and a few hired individuals who share his opinion, he would not find anyone but himself saying this; rather, he is driven by defense factors fueled by material gain. If the Professor had troubled himself with a referendum on this matter, he would have known that every Muslim and every Arab does not share this
view with him, unless they are outsiders to these two elements, in which case we have no concern for his defense or attack. Perhaps the phrase ("victims of ignorance") applies to the Professor himself perfectly; rather, it is tailored exactly to his size and stature. Our statement is supported by the speech delivered by Mr. Bevin last
night, as he made a categorical statement that the Jews want to form a Jewish state that gathers all the Jews of the world. He did not say a Zionist state. If the Jews are able—God forbid—to form a Jewish state in every sense of the word, would
Continued on page 4
Page 29
Al-Sijil — p. 4
— Continuation of the Editorial —
Do the Jews of Iraq stand idly by
as they see the Zionist flag fluttering over
the lands of Palestine "God forbid"? Rather, if
the Professor presented himself as a pure Jew, would
he accept to profess Iraqi patriotism, or would
his heart long for the Jewish state?)
The Professor continues and cites the speech of
His Excellency Al-Said, forgetting that
Nuri al-Said is a head of government and
is responsible for his words, and his position does not permit him
to say otherwise; but if he resigned from
his position and someone swore him by his sanctities,
he would have said nothing but (that every Jew is a Zionist).
And there is no defect in this, as we all
feel Arab dignity, and when
the signs of the Arab Renaissance appeared to us and we took
a pledge of independence, we left the Turkish army
with whom we are bound by religion (which is the strongest
bond) and joined under the banner of Al-Hussein
and his sons. The Turks considered all Arabs
to be aspiring for independence, and the words of the
rest of the Arabs were of no avail to the Turks. When
the Faisalite rule was established in Syria
and Iraq, Arab employees left the Turkish
government and joined the Arab government,
and even Professor Sati' al-Husri, who
was not proficient in speaking Arabic, left the Turks
because he is of Arab origin. Does Professor
Yahya want to strip the Jews of this sentiment?
And if the Jews of Yemen, who are the most
ignorant Jews in the world, flee from Yemen to join
the alleged Jewish state, how can we exclude
the Jews of Iraq and elsewhere, when they possess
a level of culture that the Jews of Yemen do not aspire to?
It seems to me that the Professor wants to
reward the days against their nature. Despite all this,
we have discussed Nuri al-Said's speech
and disagreed with him in his view, which is the opinion of the
entire nation, except for the politicians whom the
Professor refers to, who are of his likeness. God
Almighty says: (You will surely find the most intense of people
in animosity toward the believers to be the Jews and those who
associate others with Allah). And Professor Yahya Qasim wants
us to disbelieve the words of God and believe his
paid words. God says: (If they gain dominance over you,
they would be to you as enemies and extend against you
their hands and their tongues with evil, and they wish you would disbelieve).
Professor Yahya Qasim considers them his brothers, and perhaps
he is not wrong in the naming; but for the Arab and for
the Muslim, it is not permissible for the Jews to be his brothers;
rather, they have what we have and owe what we owe if
they are sincere in their intention toward the homeland.
We are not enemies of the Jews in themselves, nor do we
oppose them out of ignorance or for harm they caused us. We have
friends among them to whom we have often spoken frankly
and they acknowledged the truth. One of the
Jews in Basra, who is alive and well,
told me in the presence of a group of people: (Whoever
tells you that a Jew becomes a patriot is
a liar). So what is Professor Yahya's answer
to that, and does he accept that this
saying applies to him? The Professor ignores the flight of Jews
to Palestine and ignores the Zionist leaflets
arriving in Iraq and ignores the actions of Hayyim
⟦Nathaniel⟧ who smuggled thousands of Jews
to Palestine. This ignoring has no justification
except loyalty to the legal profession and a prelude
to receiving the fee. In any case, whoever knows
the Professor's leanings and realizes the reality of the policies
he has followed since his youth does not find this
saying or this defense too much for him.

Regarding the Nurses of
Mar Elias Hospital
The Jewish Hospitals Committee has decided
to deprive the nurses of Mar Elias Hospital
of housing and food at the hospital, even though
this is one of their rights that was agreed upon
with them, and they have continued to enjoy it since
entering the hospital; therefore, it is not considered
an extra grant for them, but rather constitutes a large portion
of their meager salaries. The aforementioned hospital
is a charitable institution whose goal is caring for the sick, and it
is not necessary for its revenues to cover
the expenses. Any deficit in the hospital budget
must be covered by the other revenues of the community,
and it is not fair that the deficit - if it exists - be paid
at the expense of the poor daughters of the community
who are employees and who are distinguished from
their peers by their knowledge, activity, and their practice
of a difficult humanitarian profession.
We see no excuse for the respected members
of the committee in this action toward the nurses
who exert Herculean efforts and spend
long hours day and night staying up to ensure
the comfort of patients in exchange for meager salaries.
Working girls should be encouraged
and treated in a manner befitting their status and the
humanitarian service they provide, and the sacrifices they
offer, and the criticism they are exposed to
due to old traditions, which even affects
their marriage prospects. It would be more appropriate for the ⟦...⟧ committee
and the committees of the ⟦...⟧ community
to appreciate and consider these matters toward these
working nurses.
If the many taxes that
the community pays are not spent on such
projects, then what project is more deserving than
a hospital to be spent on? Furthermore, are there not
among the wealthy of our community those who earn thousands
of Dinars in a single deal, who can
donate something small relative to their profits
to a hospital for the needy sick? And is it
fair to settle the deficit, if it exists,
at the expense of the nurses' meager morsels
and their small salaries, rather than from the vast
wealth of the community's rich? These are questions
we direct to the leadership of the Jewish community
and the hospital committee to answer, for we,
the Jews, denounce these
actions that lead to the erosion of the rights of
these diligent and self-sacrificing nurses
in the service of humanity, at the hands of those
who claim to watch over our interests.

Promoters of Sectarianism
Continue to Commit Their Crimes
About two months ago, we wrote an editorial titled "Promoters of Sectarianism are Criminals who must be Combatted," in which we denounced sectarianism and appealed to all Iraqis, regardless of their religions and sects, to expose the promoters of sectarianism and to fight and combat them, just as they combat harmful insects with all their strength, and to cleanse our society of their evils and sins. Our article was met with complete support from everyone, and it could only be met with such support given the adherence of all Iraqis to their sacred national unity. No one deviated from the consensus of the nation on this matter except for a small, insignificant group that specialized in intrigue and dividing the ranks of the nation, and which has a record full of these criminal acts. Last Tuesday, we wrote an editorial titled "The Jews of Iraq and Zionist Fabrications," in which we refuted the claims of the Zionist leader "Goldmann" in his response to the speech of His Excellency Dr. Jamali. We said in our aforementioned article that since the Jews of Iraq are citizens like all other Iraqi citizens, enjoying all the rights enjoyed by their Muslim and Christian brothers, and we said that this is the feeling of all Iraqis toward their Jewish brothers, and that if there are a few people who do not feel this way, they do not represent the Iraqi people and are either victims of ignorance or victims of some provocative acts. However, those who were angered by our first article, regarding the denunciation of acts of division between a Muslim and his Muslim brother and the call to all Iraqis to combat the promoters of sectarianism as corrupt dividers, those individuals were also angered by our last article. For some reason, "they took it upon themselves" and accused themselves of being the ones intended as promoters of sectarianism and that they are the ignorant fanatics. So they tried again to carry out acts of intrigue, and began once more working to divide the people of one country in the name of religion, while religion is innocent of them, because religion commands what is right
and they command what is wrong. Although we know well that these few individuals are of no importance, neither in terms of number nor in terms of status, and that they are a neglected group that our Iraqi society has turned its back on, so they became resentful and began to plot against it, we felt it our duty to warn Iraqi public opinion and warn the government of the danger of these instigators of sedition and demand that they be combatted relentlessly, that laws be applied against them, and that they be brought to justice as criminals to receive their punishment. All Iraqis are brothers; there is no difference between a Muslim, a Christian, and a Jew, or between a Shia and a Sunni. This is the principle approved by the Iraqi people in their constitution, in Article (18), which states: "Iraqis are equal in the enjoyment of civil and political rights and in the duties and public obligations they owe; there is no discrimination among them in this regard due to origin, language, or religion." Our Iraqi constitution, then, has denounced sectarianism and equalized Iraqis regardless of their different religions and sects. Why then this violation of the constitution? What do these promoters of division want? And for which foreign party do they work?
"Iraqis are not enemies of the Jews." This is what was stated only six days ago by His Excellency Mr. Nuri al-Said, the Prime Minister, and this is what Dr. Jamali, our Foreign Minister, emphasized in all his statements made recently in London and elsewhere. Rather, this is what all Iraqis believe in, and it is what
all previous Iraqi governments have adhered to, and what subsequent governments will adhere to, not only because the constitution stipulates it, but because Iraqis—both Muslims and Christians—are not, in fact, enemies of the Jews. We, who have combated and will continue to combat Zionism and everything related to it in terms of colonialist tendencies and aggressive movements, say to those in whose hearts is a disease: we and all the Iraqi people, when we combat Zionism, we combat it because it is a reactionary colonialist movement that intends harm to our Arab countries. Our struggle against Zionism does not mean, and cannot mean, that we are fighting the Jews. Just as it is absurd to say that every Jew is a Zionist, it is equally absurd to say that there are no non-Jews who serve Zionism and work on its behalf.
Every attempt to divide Iraqis on the basis of religion or sect and to incite feelings of hatred and animosity among the residents of Iraq is a crime punishable by our penal code with hard labor and imprisonment; rather, it is a national crime before the law considers it a crime and imposes a punishment for it. This is what all Iraqis believe, and this is what all Iraqi governments have followed.
As for those who were naturally inclined to plot against the people of this country and create division among the ranks of the people, they are, fortunately, a small group of no consequence or value. However, they are nonetheless harmful and corrupt elements from whose toxins our society must be completely cleansed.

which did not provide facts, evidence, or honest

and wit, and he is young. This is good news we bring to the people, for the
youth element in the council benefits the people who are tired of the raising and
lowering of hands.

on his cane. He is a chronic deputy for the Jewish community of Mosul,
which does not harbor complete love for him, but his success was achieved through the marriage of the niece
of the great benefactor Eliezer Kadoorie, the friend of the late Ja'far Pasha
al-Askari and Nuri Pasha al-Said. He has little interaction with the members of his community,
and they were determined to nominate Sasson Semah, but in a moment of
inattention and in a certain place, a withdrawal petition was written! And it was presented
to Sasson Semah for signature, and thus Ibrahim Nahum was considered

Farid Daoud Samra
A shy, reckless young man whose face flushes with modesty like a virgin when
he speaks, but his actions in the Al-Rashid Club announce his lack of experience.
He twists in his gait, not out of coquetry or pampering, but due to a deficiency that
some attribute to him in any case; he is not good at speaking, for he is a mechanical engineer,
and he does not adhere to the rules of (etiquette) in front of women, and you know that about him from the very first
sitting with him, and there is no secret. He talks a lot of nonsense and delirium, and performs unusual
movements if luck goes against him at the (poker) tables. There are
hundreds in the Israelite community in Baghdad more suitable than him to represent them,
but the prestige of his father, our professor Daoud Samra, is what placed him in this
position. May the deputy position fix his shortcomings and may he become a useful member
of Iraqi society like his father, who used to fail me in the principles of
civil trials every year until I became a lawyer in full
and complete capacity!!
Salman Shina
A successful lawyer and a deputy experienced in commercial matters and civil
affairs, unlike the Muslim deputies who were destined to be represented only by
the Bedouin and the commoner to carry out a deliberate Saxon policy. Salman is
pot-bellied, has slightly sharp looks, and a voice that is almost loud.
He is eloquent and loves musical gatherings, and in these
gatherings, he imposes his control over his kin with his jokes and laughter. We criticize him
for always boasting of his merit over the lawyers who graduated after him. He has
unrivaled expertise in shaking his belly and shoulders, and we fear that the
new deputy Yaqoub Battat will become his student in that, for he teaches dancing to
whomever he wishes without teaching (fees); an art whose profits are all from law and from
deputy allowances. His heart is relatively good. (Kamil), the usher of the

The second session of the trial of Taha Al-Fayyad
on charges of libel and insult before the Penal Court
Hearing the testimonies of Masters Muhammad Zaki Abdul Karim, Abdul Amir
Abu Turab, Muhammad Saleh Bahr al-Ulum, and Kamil Qazanji, all of whom
support the accusation - Mr. Hussein Jamil and Mr. Abdul Hadi
Al-Bajari come forward to testify in the next session
Last Saturday, the day before yesterday, was the date of the second session of the trial of Taha Al-Fayyad before the Baghdad Penal Court in the libel and insult cases filed against him by lawyer Yahya Qasim and lawyer Nazim al-Zahawi. At half past ten, Mr. Muhammad Mahmoud al-Qishtaini, the penal judge, opened the session, and the defendant and the two plaintiffs entered, accompanied by Mr. Sharif Al-Sheikh, their representative, as the defendant Taha Al-Fayyad entered his place in the dock. The trial began in the case of lawyer Yahya Qasim, so a list of witnesses whose testimonies were requested to be heard was presented to the court. They are Masters Muhammad Zaki Abdul Karim, the lawyer, Abdul Amir Abu Turab, the lawyer, Muhammad Saleh Bahr al-Ulum, the well-known people's poet, and Kamil Qazanji, the lawyer, who gave their testimonies, all of which support that what appeared in Taha Al-Fayyad's articles involves libel and insult. Mr. Hussein Jamil, the lawyer, and Mr. Abdul Hadi Al-Bajari, the lawyer, were called to hear their testimonies, and in view of their absence, the hearing of their testimonies was postponed to the next session. Then the trial took place in the second case of lawyer Yahya
Qasim, in which Masters Muhammad Zaki Abdul Karim, Abdul Amir Abu Turab, and Muhammad Saleh Bahr al-Ulum gave testimony. Then the court listened to the statement of the accused, who tried to deny the charge, claiming that he was defending the Islamic cause. After that, the court began considering the case of lawyer Nazim al-Zahawi against the accused Taha Al-Fayyad, in which Mr. Muhammad Zaki Abdul Karim, Muhammad Saleh Bahr al-Ulum, and Abdul Amir Abu Turab gave testimony, then the hearing of the rest of the witnesses was postponed.
It happened in this session that the accused asked the witnesses about the parties they belong to. They replied to him that this question was irrelevant, yet some of them answered him that they belong to the National Democratic Party, others to the People's Party, and others to the National Union Party.
The accused claimed that they were not neutral, but the court did not pay attention to his objection due to its lack of merit. During the trial, the accused's attention was drawn to the necessity of distinguishing in his speech between Jews and Zionism and not touching the feelings of Jewish citizens.
The accused asked the master witnesses to guide him to the difference between Judaism and Zionism, so they told him that Judaism is a religion and Zionism is a colonial political ideology.
The accused asked Mr. Muhammad Saleh Bahr al-Ulum, after he gave his testimony, to state whether he had been convicted of a political charge, so Mr. Bahr al-Ulum answered him, "This is none of your business, but rather it is the specialty of the Criminal Investigation Department." All the master witnesses denounced Zionism. The Penal Court also drew the attention of two of the defendant's lawyers to the fact that some of the questions they directed to the witnesses were not in the interest of their client, the accused. The court asked lawyer Mr. Sharif Al-Sheikh to deliver his speech, so he delivered it, in which he attacked Zionism and explained the difference between Judaism and Zionism.
The accused requested to hear his defense witnesses, who are Messrs. Salim Al-Nuaimi, Nu'man Al-Ani, Naji Ma'rouf, Kamal Al-Ta'i, and Jalal Al-Hanafi. The trial was adjourned to 19-4-1947 to hear the rest of the prosecution witnesses and to hear the defense witnesses.

President Lincoln said
In the year 1789
I warn you most solemnly that
unless you prevent the Jews from entering the country
your children and their descendants will curse you while you are
in your graves.
The ideas of the Jews are not like our ideas
and even if they lived among us, they are a danger to this
country. If we allow them to enter it, they will realize
the failure of our policy; therefore, in this case, the
American Constitution must stipulate their prohibition
from immigrating to it, once and for all.
And if the Jews are not prevented from entering
our country, within the next two hundred years
our children will become laborers in the fields
to feed their Jewish masters, who will take
their large seats in the financial circles,
rubbing hand over hand with signs of joy appearing
on their faces.

the various measures taken in the northern

the smuggling of Jews on one hand and Zionist goods
on the other, and these precautions and measures
resulted in tangible success that led to cutting off
the smuggling after the arrest of a gang for smuggling
Jews between Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine.
As for the northern borders, i.e., the
Turkish-Syrian borders, there is no longer any
trace of movements of smuggling European Jews through
Syrian territories, thanks to the firmness of the men of
the Syrian border guards from the army, gendarmerie,
and public security, but it is painful that there appeared
recently a few persons whose number does not exceed
the fingers of one hand, of base souls
and weak faith, whose money blinded their insight,
so they turned their faces toward the Jews and agreed
with them on smuggling.

Important Statement
By His Eminence Rabbi Sassoon Khedouri
Regarding the Fabrications of the Zionist Newspaper HaBoker
Our representative contacted His Eminence Rabbi Sassoon Khedouri, President of the Jewish Community
in Baghdad, and sought His Eminence's opinion on what the Zionist newspaper HaBoker broadcast regarding the Jews
of Iraq, and His Eminence stated:
The fabrications of this Zionist newspaper do not need a denial due to their absurdity and the
insinuations within them that deceive no one. The Jews of Iraq are sons of this country, living in it with prosperity
and tranquility alongside their brothers from other religious sects. Jewish employees are performing
their duties, and no one has asked them to resign, nor has the government asked the Community Council
to issue a statement against Zionism.
The President of the Community concluded his statement by pointing out that the members of his community were and still are
considering themselves an integral part of this homeland in which they have lived for thousands of years.
They denounce every attempt to divide them and their fellow citizens and pray to God Almighty
to protect with His eternal care His Majesty the Beloved King and His Highness the Regent and his Great Crown Prince
and to grant success to his wise government for what is in the best interest and prosperity of the country.
