View interactive document page

Description

These are archival materials from the Baghdadi Jewish community. Contents and topics include: correspondence between the different community committees, the Iraqi government, schools in Baghdad, and the diaspora community – primarily the Jewish community in Shanghai, China. There are letters about life insurance and insurance for the community as a whole. Other items include correspondence regarding travel to Iran; a chart with the names of Jewish schools and hospitals and their dates of establishment; a handwritten note requesting proof of service certification from the head of the Reemah Kadoorie Eye Hospital because of the financial hardship of the requester; and a letter from the President of the Jewish community in Baghdad congratulating a member of the Shanghai-Baghdadi diaspora community on receiving the “Order of the Brilliant Jade” award from the Chinese government.

To the honorable and virtuous Mr. Nissim Kadoorie, respected
I offer you greetings and salutations from the depths of my heart, and thereafter I represent to you that you know
that my financial situation is very poor, and for some time there has been a shortage of work, and in these days
I worked at the Jewish school named Nuriel, and after I had been there for a short time
the wise man elected by your presence and by the council dismissed me and said to me: we are not in need
of you, and he dismissed me. Afterwards I went to the director and he said to me: in this situation
we know nothing of your matter. Afterwards I went to the official who was in Hamam al-Malih at that
time, and he said to me: you are from the Jewish school, and after I entered that school he dismissed me.
Then I requested from them a paper stating that you were working in this school, and I asked the director of the school
and he did not agree to give it to me. Therefore I beseech your presence to help me with this paper
from the school.

After greetings - I have completed the printing of the National Defense Law and its supplements

So I hope you will kindly pay the amount of one and a half Dinars for my labor.
Knowing that the mentioned amount is much less than what I should receive
given the large amount of work and the great deal of time lost on it.
We thank you in advance.
