With the help of the Name
In the name of the Lord we shall do and succeed, Amen and Amen, with the help of the Name, blessed be He
After the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they drew near before the Lord and died; and the Lord spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron
And the Lord said to Moses: Speak to Aaron your brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the veil, before the ark-cover
which is upon the ark, that he die not; for I appear in the cloud upon the ark-cover. With this shall Aaron come into the holy place: with a young bullock for a sin-offering
and a ram for a burnt-offering. He shall put on the holy linen tunic, and he shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh, and shall be girded with the linen girdle, and with the linen mitre shall he be attired;
they are the holy garments; and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and put them on.
And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel two he-goats for a sin-offering, and one ram for a burnt-offering. And Aaron shall present the bullock of the sin-offering,
which is for himself, and make atonement for himself, and for his house. And he shall take the two goats, and set them before the Lord at the door of the tent of meeting. And Aaron shall cast
lots upon the two goats: one lot for the Lord, and the other lot for Azazel. And Aaron shall present the goat upon which
the lot fell for the Lord, and offer him for a sin-offering. But the goat, on which the lot fell for Azazel, shall be set alive before the Lord, to make atonement
over him, to send him away for Azazel into the wilderness. And Aaron shall present the bullock of the sin-offering, which is for himself, and shall make atonement for himself, and for his house, and shall kill
the bullock of the sin-offering
which is for himself. And he shall take a censer full of coals of fire from off the altar before the Lord, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it
within the veil. And he shall put the incense upon the fire before the Lord, that the cloud of the incense may cover the ark-cover that is upon the testimony, that
he die not. And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the ark-cover on the east; and before the ark-cover shall he sprinkle of the blood seven times.
Then shall he kill the goat of the sin-offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the veil, and do with his blood as he did
with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the ark-cover, and before the ark-cover; and he shall make atonement for
I have written this, I the humble one

In the name of the Compassionate, full of mercy, we shall begin
Blessed be the God of Israel who gave the Torah to His people Israel through our teacher Moses, peace be upon him, containing positive and negative commandments
And he who fulfills them merits life in the world to come, and he who does not fulfill them, his punishment is great, may the Merciful save us; and every person is obligated to study
these commandments and their laws so that he may know how to perform the commandments according to their law. Therefore, I, the young Joseph son of Ezra, of blessed memory, saw fit to write
the names of the commandments briefly in the Arabic language so that they may be easy on the tongue, and also the commandments that are practiced in this time outside the Land
for this study is a great commandment for every person
And behold, may the Lord increase you a thousand times over and bless you as He spoke to you. And the first commandment is a positive commandment
to believe that there is one eternal God
Commandment 2: ⟦(1)⟧ to believe in the unity of the Creator, blessed be He, and He is singular and unique in the aspect of unity and there is none like Him in any way
And if you say, what is the difference between Commandment 1 and Commandment 2, for behold both are one matter since we speak of faith, and what is between
the two? The answer is that Commandment 1 is a positive commandment to believe that there is one God existing in the world and He is the true God, and everything
besides Him is not truth, and He is the one who brings all existing things into existence, and existing things cannot endure without Him, while He, may He be blessed,
does not need them in any way at all, neither for help nor for assistance, rather He is the one who brings all existing things into existence and He is the leader of everything
and all existing things need Him. And in Commandment 2, it is a positive commandment to believe that He, may He be blessed, is one in any sense, not two and not three,
but one, singular and unique in any sense, not separated and not divided in any sense. And these are the first two positive commandments.
Commandment 3: to love the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And how is the love? It is when a person contemplates the commandments
of the Holy One, Blessed be He, and His wonders and His Torah, then he will recognize the greatness of the Holy One, Blessed be He, and his heart will be inflamed with His love, and this is a positive commandment.
Commandment 4: to fear the honored and awesome Name, as it is said: 'The Lord your God you shall fear.' And how is the fear? When a person thinks of his deeds
the evil ones that he did, and he shall fear the punishment of the Name, may He be blessed.
Commandment 5: to serve the Lord with all your heart. And what is the service of the heart? This is prayer, and this is a positive commandment.
Commandment 6: to cleave to Him, may He be blessed, as it is said: 'and to Him you shall cleave.' And how is the cleaving? It is when a person cleaves to Torah scholars and hears
their words and learns from them, and this is a positive commandment.
Commandment 7: to swear by His Name in truth, as it is said: 'and by His Name you shall swear,' and this is a positive commandment.
Returning to Commandment 1, which is to believe that there is a God.
Know, my son, that all the commandments are 613 commandments: 248 positive commandments corresponding to the limbs of a person, and 365 negative commandments
corresponding to the sinews of a person. And whoever fulfills a commandment, it is as if he sustained his whole body, and whoever transgresses a commandment, it is as if he blemished that limb and against
that commandment. And the whole Torah depends on these commandments, and all the commandments depend on these two commandments, which are 1: to believe

May peace settle upon the earth, Amen and indeed, also life and tranquility and blessings and all goodness forever, Amen, from His mouth
from Him and in Him also now, and may He gladden us with the best of good and blessing as is proper, as it is said: Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom forever and ever
Some say to add Amen and Amen and the chapter of Shimon who is the Creator, blessed be His name and His memory forever, and You from His mouth etc.
And may the Holy One, blessed be He, send blessing and success in all the work of our hands, and in all that we turn to may we be wise and succeed, Amen and Amen forever
As it is written: For it is good in the eyes of God, and also this is good for you, that your portion should be in life and peace, Amen forever, Amen and Amen
And may the Blessed Name in His mercy grant us the merit to see the building of the Holy Temple and the coming of the Messiah quickly in our days, Amen and Amen forever
Also in the Priestly Blessing one should say: So shall your seed be, and also in the Priestly Blessing one should say: So shall your seed be, Amen and Amen forever
Amen and so may it be His will, Amen forever, for it is good in the eyes of God and peace, Amen forever, Amen
And it is further written: For to You alone it is proper, and that is when you do kindness and charity with the poor of your people, and his merit shall stand for generation after generation
And You are the God of grace and mercy, and You are my Lord God, Priest and Righteousness, and all charities are from a higher power and grace
Great which You created, and in Your Torah it is written that all charities are grace and truth and all goodness, Amen and Amen forever

These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel on the other side of the Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against Suph,
between Paran and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab. Eleven days from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir unto
Kadesh-barnea. And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first of the month, that Moses spoke to
the children of Israel according to all that the Lord had commanded him for them; after he had smitten Sihon the king of the Amorites,
who dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who dwelt in Ashtaroth in Edrei. On the other side
of the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses began to explain this law, saying: The Lord our God
spoke to us in Horeb, saying: You have dwelt long enough in this mountain; turn and take your journey, and go to the hill country
of the Amorites, and to all their neighbors, in the plain, in the mountain, and in the lowland, and in the South, and by the sea shore, the land of the Canaanites,
and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates. Behold, I have set the land before you; go in and possess
the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them
and to their seed after them. And I spoke to you at that time, saying: I am not able to bear you alone;
the Lord your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude. The Lord God of
your fathers make you a thousand times so many more as you are, and bless you, as He has promised you! How
can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife? Get you wise men, and understanding, and full of knowledge,
according to your tribes, and I will make them heads over you. And you answered me, and said: The thing which you have spoken is good
to do. So I took the heads of your tribes, wise men, and full of knowledge, and made them heads
over you, captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties, and captains of tens, and officers for your tribes.
And I charged your judges at that time, saying: Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between
a man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him. You shall not respect persons in judgment; you shall hear the small as well as the great; you
shall not be afraid of the face of any man; for the judgment is God's; and the cause that is too hard for you, you shall bring
to me, and I will hear it. And I commanded you at that time all the things which you should do. And we journeyed
from Horeb, and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which you saw, by the way of the hill country
of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea. And I said to you:
You are come to the hill country of the Amorites, which the Lord our God gives to us. Behold, the Lord your God has set
the land before you; go up, possess it, as the Lord God of your fathers has spoken to you; fear not, neither
be dismayed. And you came near to me every one of you, and said: Let us send men before us, that they may search out for us
the land, and bring us word again of the way by which we must go up, and the cities unto which we shall come.
And the thing pleased me well; and I took twelve men of you, one man for every tribe.
And all their words are sweet as honey and the honeycomb, and the whole world is worthy of them; and anyone
who engages in Torah for its own sake merits many things; and not only that, but the whole world is worthy of him.
He is called a beloved friend, one who loves the Omnipresent, loves the creatures, gladdens the Omnipresent, gladdens
the creatures; and it clothes him in humility and fear, and fits him to be righteous, pious, upright, and faithful;
it distances him from sin and brings him near to merit; and people enjoy from him counsel and wisdom, understanding and strength,
as it is said: 'Counsel is mine and sound wisdom; I am understanding, power is mine.' And it gives him kingship and dominion and the investigation
of judgment; and the secrets of the Torah are revealed to him; and he becomes like an ever-strengthening spring and like a river that does not cease; and he is modest,
patient, and forgiving of insult; and it magnifies him and exalts him above all works.
Rabbi Joshua ben Levi said: Every single day a Heavenly Voice goes out from Mount Horeb and proclaims
and says: 'Woe to the creatures for the insult to the Torah!' For anyone who does not engage in Torah
is called 'rebuked,' as it is said: 'As a ring of gold in a swine's snout, so is a beautiful woman without discretion.' And it says: 'And the tablets
were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved upon the tablets.' Do not read
'charut' (engraved) but 'cherut' (freedom), for you have no free man except one who engages in the study of Torah. And anyone
who engages in the study of Torah, behold he is uplifted, as it is said: 'And from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel
to Bamoth.' One who learns from his fellow one chapter, or one law, or one verse, or one word,
even one letter, must treat him with honor; for so we found with David, King of Israel, who
learned from Ahithophel only two things, yet called him his master, his chief, and his acquaintance, as it is said:
'But it was you, a man my equal, my chief, and my acquaintance.' And are these things not a matter of 'a fortiori' logic? If David, King of
Israel, who learned from Ahithophel only two things, called him his master, his chief,
and his acquaintance, then one who learns from his fellow one chapter, or one law, or one verse, or one
word, even one letter, how much more so must he treat him with honor. And there is no
honor except Torah, as it is said: 'The wise shall inherit honor,' and 'the upright shall inherit good.' And there is no good
except Torah, as it is said: 'For I give you good doctrine; forsake not my Torah.'
This is the way of Torah: a morsel of bread with salt you shall eat, and water by measure you shall drink, and upon the ground
you shall sleep, and a life of hardship you shall live, and in the Torah you shall toil. If you do so, 'Happy shall you be, and it shall be well with you.'
'Happy shall you be' in this world, 'and it shall be well with you' in the World to Come. Do not seek greatness for yourself, and do not

And he completed it ⟦...⟧ and it was on the eighth day that Moses called Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel
Rashi's explanation, may his memory be a blessing: On the eighth day of the consecration, which is the first of the month of Nisan, when the Tabernacle was erected on that day
And it received ten crowns etc. and it is difficult: why did Moses call Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel?
For were not Aaron and his sons in the consecration all seven days, and what need was there to call them?
And also the elders of Israel, why did he call them? And it can be answered that Aaron and his sons were inside the Tabernacle all seven
days of the consecration and they did not exit the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, and on the eighth day they went out from the Tabernacle
to the people and Moses called for them to come out, and also the elders of Israel he called so that they would know
that by the word of the Almighty Aaron entered the service, and they should not say he entered of his own accord and appointed himself
and appointed his sons as priests, and also so that they would show honor to Aaron and his sons before all of Israel.
And Moses called Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel etc. and it is difficult: why did he not call Moses
first? For is he not the greatest of them all? And it can be answered that Moses was busy with the work of the Tabernacle
all seven days of the consecration, and on the eighth day he rested from his work and called Aaron and his sons
and the elders of Israel to come to the Tabernacle, and also Moses was busy with prayer and supplications
before the Holy One, Blessed be He, that His Presence should dwell in Israel, and he called them to come and see the glory of the Lord.
And the glory of the Lord appeared to you etc. and it is difficult: why did Moses say to them "and the glory of the Lord appeared to you"?
For has it not already been said "and the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people"? And it can be answered that Moses said to them: if you do
according to everything that the Lord commanded you, then the glory of the Lord will appear to you, and he also hinted to them that on the
eighth day fire descended from heaven and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering and the fat parts, and all the people
saw and they sang out and fell on their faces, and this is the glory of the Lord that appeared to them on the eighth day.
And Moses said to Aaron: draw near to the altar etc. and it is difficult: why did he say to him "draw near to the altar"?
For was not Aaron standing next to the altar? And it can be answered that Aaron was ashamed and afraid to approach the
altar because of the sin of the Calf, for the altar appeared to him in the likeness of a calf, and Moses called to him
and said to him: draw near to the altar, why are you ashamed? For this you were chosen etc. and he also hinted to him
that through the sacrifices he would offer, the sin of the Calf would be atoned for him and atoned for Israel.
And this is what he said: "and perform your sin offering and your burnt offering and atone for yourself and for the people."
And it is difficult: why did he prioritize his sin offering over his burnt offering? For is not the burnt offering prior to the sin offering? And it can be answered
that the sin offering comes to atone for the sin of the Calf and the burnt offering comes to atone for the thoughts of the heart,
and one must atone for the action first and afterwards for the thoughts of the heart, therefore he prioritized
his sin offering over his burnt offering etc. and also hinted to him that his sin offering is the calf he made and the burnt offering
is the ram he offered to atone for the sin of the Calf etc.
