Parshat Chayei Sarah
And the life of Sarah was a hundred years and twenty years and seven years, the years of Sarah's life. The commentator of blessed memory explained that they were all equal for good.
In the years that our mother Sarah, peace be upon her, lived, she was completely righteous; at a hundred years old she was as a twenty-year-old regarding sin, and at twenty she was as a seven-year-old for beauty. And it is necessary to understand
what this means that the commentator of blessed memory explained that they were all equal for good. And further, what is the meaning of the explanation that at a hundred she was as twenty regarding sin and at twenty as seven for beauty,
behold, the verse says: And the life of Sarah was a hundred years and twenty years and seven years, the years of Sarah's life. And it is necessary to understand.
And it seems correct to explain that behold it is known that a person in this world must serve his Creator, may He be blessed, at every single moment and every single hour and every single day
with all his strength and all his might, and every single day that passes over him without the service of the Creator, may He be blessed, is called a defective and lacking day, and is not called a complete day. And this is
what our Rabbis of blessed memory said: Abraham and Sarah were old, coming with their days—that they were coming with all their days before the Holy One Blessed be He, and not even one day was missing from them,
for every single day they were serving their Creator, may He be blessed, with all their strength and all their might. And this is what the verse said: And the life of Sarah was a hundred years and twenty years
and seven years. Meaning, that all these years were complete in every single moment and every single hour and every single day in the service of the Creator, may He be blessed, and not
even one moment was missing from them. And this is what the commentator of blessed memory said: that they were all equal for good, meaning that all the days and years were equal for good
in the service of the Creator, may He be blessed, and there was no defect or lack in them. And this is why it was said: at a hundred as twenty for sin and at twenty as seven for beauty,
meaning that just as a seven-year-old is without sin, so she was at a hundred years old without sin. And just as at twenty she is with beauty, so she was at seven with beauty,
meaning in the beauty of deeds and commandments. And this is what the verse said: the years of Sarah's life. Meaning that they were all alive and existing before the Creator, may He be blessed,
as there was no defect or lack in them at all.
And there is further to explain, for behold it is known
that a person in this world needs to serve his Creator, may He be blessed, in two things. One is in awe and the second is in love.
And behold, awe is the aspect of a hundred, and love is the aspect of twenty, and action is the aspect of seven. And this is what the verse said:
And the life of Sarah was a hundred years and twenty years and seven years. Meaning that our mother Sarah, peace be upon her, served her Creator, may He be blessed, with these three things,
namely with awe and with love and with action. <del>⟦illegible⟧</del> And this is what the commentator of blessed memory said: that they were all equal for good, meaning that all these three things
were equal for her in one goodness to serve her Creator, may He be blessed, with all her strength and all her might. And this is why it was said: at a hundred as twenty for sin and at twenty
as seven for beauty. Meaning that just as awe, which is the aspect of a hundred, is without sin, so was love, which is the aspect of twenty, without sin.
And just as love, which is the aspect of twenty, is with beauty, so was action, which is the aspect of seven, with beauty. Meaning in the beauty of deeds and commandments.
And this is what the verse said: the years of Sarah's life. Meaning that all these three things were alive and existing for her to serve her Creator, may He be blessed, at every single moment
and every single hour and every single day.

Parashat Vayishlach
And these are the kings who reigned etc. And Bela son of Beor reigned, and the name of his city was Dinhabah etc. And Bela died, and Jobab son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his stead.
And Jobab died, and Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his stead etc. A servant of Hashem, blessed be He, and in His Torah he meditates day and night, and he shall be like a tree planted by streams of water.
Before Him, may He be blessed, blessed be He and blessed be His name forever and ever, Amen Selah.
And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years; so the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were a hundred and forty-seven years. And the time drew near that Israel must die; and he called his son
Joseph, and said to him: 'If now I have found favor in your sight, put, I pray you, your hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me; bury me not, I pray you, in Egypt. But I will sleep with my fathers,
and you shall carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their burial-place.' And he said: 'I will do as you have said.' And he said: 'Swear to me.' And he swore to him. And Israel bowed himself upon the bed's head.
And it came to pass after these things, that one said to Joseph: 'Behold, your father is sick.' And he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. And one told Jacob, and said: 'Behold,
your son Joseph comes to you.' And Israel strengthened himself, and sat upon the bed. And Jacob said to Joseph: 'God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me,
and said to me: Behold, I will make you fruitful, and multiply you, and I will make of you a company of peoples; and will give this land to your seed after you for an everlasting possession. And now your two sons, who were born
to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you into Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh, even as Reuben and Simeon, shall be mine. And your issue, that you beget after them, shall be yours;
they shall be called after the name of their brethren in their inheritance. And as for me, when I came from Paddan, Rachel died unto me in the land of Canaan in the way, when there was still some way to come to Ephrath; and I buried
her there in the way to Ephrath—the same is Bethlehem.' And Israel beheld Joseph's sons, and said: 'Who are these?' And Joseph said to his father: 'They are my sons, whom God has given me here.'
And he said: 'Bring them, I pray you, to me, and I will bless them.' Now the eyes of Israel were dim for age, so that he could not see. And he brought them near to him; and he kissed them, and embraced them. And Israel said
to Joseph: 'I had not thought to see your face; and, lo, God has let me see your seed also.' And Joseph brought them out from between his knees; and he bowed himself with his face to the earth.
And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel's left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel's right hand, and brought them near to him. And Israel stretched out his right hand,
and laid it upon Ephraim's head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh's head, guiding his hands wittingly; for Manasseh was the first-born. And he blessed Joseph, and said: 'The God
before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God who has been my shepherd all my life long unto this day, the angel who has redeemed me from all evil, bless
the lads; and let my name be named in them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.'
And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him; and he held up his father's hand, to remove it from Ephraim's head unto Manasseh's head.
And Joseph said to his father: 'Not so, my father; for this is the first-born; put your right hand upon his head.' And his father refused, and said: 'I know it, my son, I know it; he also shall become a people,
and he also shall be great; howbeit his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.' And he blessed them that day, saying: 'By you shall Israel bless, saying: God make you
as Ephraim and as Manasseh.' And he set Ephraim before Manasseh. And Israel said to Joseph: 'Behold, I die; but God shall be with you, and bring you back
to the land of your fathers. Moreover I have given to you one portion above your brethren, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.'
And Jacob called to his sons, and said: 'Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the end of days. Assemble yourselves, and hear, you sons of Jacob; and hearken
to Israel your father.
Reuben, you are my first-born, my might, and the first-fruits of my strength; the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power. Unstable as water, have not the excellency; because you went up to your father's bed; then defiled you it—he went up to my couch.
Simeon and Levi are brethren; weapons of violence their kinship. Let my soul not come into their council; unto their assembly let my glory not be united; for in their anger they slew a man, and in their self-will they houghed an ox.
Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce, and their wrath, for it was cruel; I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel. Judah, you shall your brethren praise; your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; your father's sons shall bow down
to you. Judah is a lion's whelp; from the prey, my son, you are gone up. He stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as a lioness; who shall rouse him up?

Parashat Vayigash
Then Judah came near to him and said: 'O my lord, let your servant, I pray you, speak a word in my lord's ears, and let not your anger burn against your servant; for you are even as Pharaoh. My lord asked his servants,
saying: Have you a father, or a brother? And we said to my lord: We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him.
⟦illegible⟧ And you said to your servants: Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes upon him. And we said to my lord: The lad cannot leave his father; for if he should leave his father, his father would die.
And you said to your servants: Except your youngest brother come down with you, you shall see my face no more. And it came to pass when we came up to your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.
And our father said: Go again, buy us a little food. And we said: We cannot go down; if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down; for we may not see the man's face, except our youngest brother
be with us. And your servant my father said to us: You know that my wife bore me two sons; and the one went out from me, and I said: Surely he is torn in pieces; and I have not seen him since;
and if you take this one also from me, and harm befall him, you shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave. Now therefore when I come to your servant my father, and the lad is not with us; seeing that his soul is bound up
in his soul; it will come to pass, when he sees that the lad is not with us, that he will die; and your servants shall bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to the grave. For your servant became surety for the lad to my father, saying:
If I bring him not to you, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever. Now therefore, let your servant, I pray you, abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brothers. For how shall I go up to my father,
if the lad is not with me? lest I look upon the evil that shall come on my father.'
Then Joseph could not refrain himself
before all them that stood by him; and he cried: 'Cause every man to go out from me.' And there stood no man with him, while Joseph made himself known to his brothers. And he wept aloud; and the Egyptians heard, and the house of
Pharaoh heard. And Joseph said to his brothers: 'I am Joseph; does my father yet live?' And his brothers could not answer him; for they were affrighted at his presence. And Joseph said to his brothers: 'Come near to me, I pray you.'
And they came near. And he said: 'I am Joseph your brother, whom you sold into Egypt. And now be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life.
For these two years has the famine been in the land; and there are yet five years, in which there shall be neither plowing nor harvest. And God sent me before you to give you a remnant on the earth,
and to save you alive for a great deliverance. So now it was not you that sent me here, but God; and He has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and ruler over all the land of Egypt.
Hasten, and go up to my father, and say to him: Thus says your son Joseph: God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down to me, tarry not. And you shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near to me,
you, and your children, and your children's children, and your flocks, and your herds, and all that you have; and there will I sustain you; for there are yet five years of famine; lest you come to poverty, you, and your household, and all that you have. And, behold, your eyes
see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin, that it is my mouth that speaks to you. And you shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that you have seen; and you shall hasten and bring down my father here.'

Parashat Vayishlach
And Jacob dwelt in the land of his father's sojournings etc. ⟦illegible⟧ King Solomon, peace be upon him, said: A city of the mighty
a wise man scales etc. The interpretation: King Solomon, peace be upon him, [spoke] concerning the Good Inclination and the Evil Inclination, which are called an old and foolish king
with the mighty king; and the might of the wise man is called the Good Inclination, and this is 'A city of the mighty a wise man scales'
which is in the name of the Good Inclination that ascended and broke the wall of trust of the Evil Inclination, which is called an old king
and that is what is written: 'And Jacob dwelt in the land of his father's sojournings etc. These are the generations of Jacob: Joseph
was seventeen years old'
And furthermore, this Midrash is linked to that one:
Every single day the Evil Inclination overpowers man and seeks to kill him, as it is said: 'The wicked watches for the righteous and seeks
to kill him,' and were it not for the Holy One, Blessed be He, helping him, he could not prevail against him, as it is said: 'The Lord will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him
when he is judged,' for the Evil Inclination is called 'wicked,' as it is said: 'From the wicked comes forth wickedness' etc. This Midrash is linked to that one:
Behold, our Master brings you out of the land of Egypt; if you are willing and obey, you shall eat the good of the land; but if you refuse
and rebel, you shall be devoured by the sword; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken. He said to them,
The Holy One, Blessed be He, to Israel: Perform for Me one commandment and I will open for you an opening like the opening of a hall, and all

Luck (Mazal)
In the name of the Merciful, full of mercy, and in Him I seek help
Know, O people of love, the word of God in His Mighty Book, which falsehood does not approach from before it nor from behind it, a revelation from One Wise and Praiseworthy
In His saying in Surah al-Nur: God is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche in which is a lamp; the lamp is in a glass, the glass as if it were
a pearly star lit from a blessed tree, an olive, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. God guides to His light
whom He wills. And God presents examples for the people, and God is Knowing of all things. In houses which God has permitted to be raised and that His name be mentioned therein; exalting Him within them
in the mornings and the evenings are men whom neither commerce nor sale distracts from the remembrance of God and performing prayer and giving zakat. They fear a Day in which shall be turned about
the hearts and the eyes, that God may reward them for the best of what they did and increase them from His bounty. And God provides for whom He wills without account.
End of the word of God Exalted in Surah al-Nur.
As for the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, the Prophet said—he who does not speak out of desire, it is but a revelation revealed, taught to him by one intense in power—he said
in some of his noble speech, which is light upon light, the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said: The scholar is the trustee of God on earth; so whoever
was trustworthy, for him is Paradise, and he who is treacherous, for him is the Fire. And the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said: The scholar is the lamp of God on earth.
And the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said: The scholar is the light of God on earth; so whoever honors the scholar has honored God, and whoever insults the scholar has
insulted God. And the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said: The scholar is the beloved of God even if he were a sinner, and the ignorant is the enemy of God even if he were an ascetic.
And the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said: The scholar is the trustee of God on earth; so whoever honors him has honored God, and whoever insults him has insulted God.
And the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said:

8 Tammuz
55
Wednesday, Rosh Chodesh Elul, year 5629, Nehemiah, may his light shine.
You already know that due to the sins of the generation, on the Holy Sabbath, 26 Tammuz, the pangs of death passed over me and all thoughts
of this world were nullified from me, for I stood at the gates of Sheol and saw that there is nothing there but Torah and good deeds, and all that
a person does in this world, by the grace of God, they find all they have done before Him; and there is no high or low there, but everything is the foundation of all above
the celestial spheres. And what is written in the books, I saw with my own eyes literally, and all that I saw shall be told by my mouth from my teacher and rabbi,
our master, the pious among the pious, R. Yosef Hayyim, may the memory of the righteous and holy be for a blessing, and all that he wrote in his books I saw eye to eye, even more
so. And especially on Thursday night, 11 Elul, in the morning at 4 o'clock, for they came to me and great miracles were performed for me, and my eyes
saw and not a stranger's. And especially since the Holy Sabbath, 26 Tammuz, in the morning at 3 o'clock, I saw with actual sense, like a man seeing
his fellow in close proximity, and I saw that they were raising my soul upward, and I saw in the heavens something like a canopy of gold, the foundation of all,
the Holy One, Blessed be He. And I was filled with joy and will, and the sufferings were nullified, and I said with my mouth: Blessed be God who pays a good reward
and kindness for these sufferings of mine which I bore with love and will, in my mouth and heart. And I saw with my mouth, with actual sense, my soul ascending
on its wings,
and its appearance was like actual gold, between its two wings like the form of a dragon in the soul, and this is the great level
which I merited.
And on that same Holy Sabbath, 26 Tammuz, on Friday evening at twilight, I heard a simple voice with my mouth, sensibly, and I did not know
how my soul was heard, for they were not speaking with me, but I heard a simple voice, and this is it:
And the foundation of all that I saw, etc.
And do not be wondered that I wrote these things that I wrote with my mouth and sense myself, and I saw them with my mouth with actual sense,
in order to publicize to the people of my house that they should be God-fearing and turn from evil and be occupied with Torah and good deeds,
for all is vanity and a pursuit of wind, and all that a person does in this world, he finds before him, and there is no mercy there
except for one who performed kindness and charity in this world, and one who guarded his mouth and tongue, and one who sanctified himself
will not see the face of Gehenna. But one who sinned and transgressed and set his eyes on what is not his and spoke evil speech and gossip
will not see the face of the Shekhinah. And one who sinned and transgressed and set his eyes on what is not his and spoke evil speech and gossip
has great sufferings. And especially on the Holy Sabbath, 26 Tammuz, I saw with actual sense that ministering angels came to me
and took my soul and raised it upward, and I saw there something like a canopy of gold, and I saw with actual sense,
in close proximity, with my mouth with actual sense, that I saw with my mouth with actual sense, and I saw that all that our master the Pious wrote,
may his memory be for a blessing, in his books, I saw with actual sense in this world, that I saw with my mouth with actual sense, and I saw that all that
our master the Pious wrote, may his memory be for a blessing, in his books, I saw with actual sense.
And the foundation of all that I saw,
And I saw that all that our master the Pious wrote, may his memory be for a blessing, in his books, I saw with actual sense in this world, that I saw
with my mouth with actual sense, that I saw with my mouth with actual sense, that I saw with my mouth with actual sense, and I saw that all that our master
the Pious wrote, may his memory be for a blessing, in his books,
For what I wrote that I saw with actual sense in this world, that I saw with my mouth with actual sense, that I saw with my mouth with actual sense,
and all that our master the Pious wrote, may his memory be for a blessing, in his books, I saw with actual sense in this world, that I saw with my mouth with actual sense,
that I saw with my mouth with actual sense, that I saw with my mouth with actual sense, and I saw that all that our master the Pious wrote, may his memory be for a blessing, in his books,
And I saw that all that our master the Pious wrote, may his memory be for a blessing, in his books, I saw with actual sense in this world, that I saw with my mouth with actual sense,
that I saw with my mouth with actual sense, that I saw with my mouth with actual sense, and I saw that all that our master the Pious wrote, may his memory be for a blessing, in his books.
