The speech improvised by Mr. Ibrahim Saleh on behalf of His Eminence the Head of the Jewish Community
Rabbi Sassoon Khedouri at the funeral of
The youth of Al-Baroudiya
Honorable Gentlemen.
The glorious and blessed leap taken by our beloved people had its great meaning and its
grave significance and its decisive impact. This noble people demonstrated their intense awareness, which the
colonizers and their minions long denied them, as they demonstrated that they are a people worthy of life, deserving of elevation and transcendence. And as they demonstrated that
they are that same people who emerged from the heart of the Arabian Peninsula fourteen ⟦centuries⟧ ago to illuminate the world with the light
of their principles, and they remain in struggle against the principles of injustice and tyranny that existed then until they overcame them and made them
a thing of the past, spreading the principles of justice and brotherhood in those vast regions extending from the borders of China in the east
to the shores of the Atlantic in the west.
Honorable Gentlemen
Among the weapons used by the colonizers and their minions was a poisonous and lethal weapon, namely
the weapon of division between the sects and religions of this country. Thus, these sinners worked with their intrigues contrary to what God intended
for religions; after they came as guidance for humanity and a blessing, they turned them with their snares and intrigues into evil and a curse.
May they be disgraced and die in their rage, for the conscious and leaping Iraqi people have silenced them with a stone and thrown down the gauntlet in their faces,
and rose united in the great sacrifice, meeting the bullets of the renegade traitors with their chests while unarmed, except for
the weapon of firm faith in their right to life, a free and happy life.
Honorable Gentlemen.
On my own behalf and on behalf of His Eminence the Head of the Jewish Community, Rabbi Sassoon Khedouri, and on behalf of the spiritual
and physical councils and the social and charitable institutions, I offer the deepest condolences for our loss of those ripening flowers and those
valiant heroes who sacrificed their lives to raise the word of the people. We feel here, as we are honored
by the presence of this noble gathering, that we are only paying a small portion of our duty toward our righteous martyrs, as the duty
incumbent upon us toward them is to realize their principles for which they sacrificed, those sublime principles for which
they gave their lives cheaply.
Let us all pledge to God that we will ⟦walk⟧ as one rank, united and hand in hand, separated by neither religion nor sect
nor race, toward the goals we all aspire to: toward complete and final independence, toward complete Iraqi unity
under the shadow of His Majesty King Faisal II the Great and his faithful Regent, His Royal Highness
Prince Abdul Ilah. We also pray to God that the current ministry succeeds in achieving the demands and aspirations of the people. Indeed, He is All-Hearing,
All-Answering. Peace be upon you, and the mercy of God and His blessings.

At the time we offer our condolences to the honorable Iraqi people for their painful tragedy
with the martyrdom of a number of its righteous sons as a sacrifice on the altar of patriotism, I salute in it this
blessed leap in which Iraq appeared from its north to its south as one single rank,
compact and united despite its different elements, religions, and sects, with everyone's guide being the service of
the dear homeland in which we lived and in which our children will live in peace and security, God
willing. A valuable lesson we draw from this blessed leap is that the Iraqi
people are a conscious people who feel their dignity, proud of their sovereignty and independence. Long live Iraq,
united under the shadow of His Majesty the beloved King and His Highness the faithful Regent. ⟦line⟧

His Eminence the President of the Israelite Community, Rabbi Sassoon Khedouri, went the day before yesterday accompanied by a delegation of
members of his community and a delegation of students to the Sheikh Maaruf cemetery to visit the graves of the righteous martyrs and place a wreath on their
pure graves. Upon the arrival of the procession, the students began reciting psalms and religious hymns, then Mr. Shalom
Darwish, the lawyer, delivered a speech in which he eulogized the martyrs who offered their precious lives for the beloved homeland. After
His Eminence the President of the Community lit the candles, His Eminence recited a religious prayer for the souls of the martyrs and placed the wreath with his hand on their graves,
and everyone embraced them, with signs of deep sorrow on their faces, praying for the souls of the righteous martyrs.

Upon placing the wreath of the Israelite community on the graves of the righteous martyrs
⟦line⟧
My honorable sirs
In the name of the Iraqi Jews represented by His Eminence Rabbi Sassoon Khedouri, President of the Israelite Community
in Baghdad, we place this wreath on the grave of the late Qais bin Ibrahim al-Alusi, who sacrificed his precious
life for the sake of honor with his immortal fellow martyrs, may God bless all their souls.
It is a source of solace for the grieving souls that these victims from our own flesh and blood, whom the nation offered
as sacred sacrifices on the altar of truth and freedom, did not go in vain and will not go in vain, God willing. For what the
people have gained and what they will gain tomorrow and in future generations, the greatest credit for it goes to these brave heroes
who exposed their chests without fear or hesitation to bullets, rifles, and machine guns, which mowed them down, thus winning for the
unarmed people one of the bloody battles of freedom and writing with their pure blood the covenant of unity among the sons of the Iraqi homeland
regardless of their different religions, sects, and creeds, and they thwarted the advocates of division who spent many years dedicated to dividing
the ranks of one people and breaking the bonds of the firmest unity.
The poet said:
They died and revived their people by their death
So wonder at a death that brings life
As if an earthquake struck ⟦...⟧
And from the earthquake flowed a spring of Euphrates
***
Sirs
Before this pure event that gathers the remains of one of the heroes of freedom, we stand humble, tearful, and praying for mercy
invoking verses of abundant mercy upon his pure soul and upon the souls of his fellow martyrs wherever they rest in peace.
May they all be congratulated, immortalized in the gardens of bliss for what they offered for the elevation of their people, and may they be reassured of this
loyal people, for they will not be forgotten generation after generation. May God cover them with His vast mercy, for He is the most merciful, the
All-Hearing, the Responder.
