The sixth day of the twenty-second week of the month of September in the year five thousand six hundred and seventy-five of the creation of the world, according to the calendar we are accustomed to use here in the city of Baghdad, situated on the Tigris River, by the permission of the scholars, may their dignity be exalted. How the young groom Salman, son of the protected Isaac, said to the blessed bride Mazli al-Tawba, daughter of Shaul, son of Nassim: "Be my wife according to the law of Moses and Israel, and I, with the help of the Almighty, will support, sustain, honor, respect, and provide for you, and I will clothe you according to the custom of Jewish men who provide for, sustain, honor, respect, and raise and clothe their wives in truth and faithfulness. And I have given you the dowry of your virginity, which is deferred and secured upon my assets, two hundred silver Zains, twenty mithqals of silver for the righteous and polite son. And upon me is your sustenance, clothing, and needs, and marital relations according to the way of the world." The bride consented and became his wife, and the aforementioned groom consented and added from his own money an increase to the original amount of this Ketubah (the dowry) the sum of one dinar. And this is the trousseau that she brought from her father's house: dowry money of twenty-two and a half dinars, and a trousseau of forty dinars. And she gave the groom a gift of thirty dinars. And the aforementioned groom gave her an advanced and deferred payment of thirty-seven and a half dinars. The total of the increase, the trousseau, the advanced, and the deferred amounts is one hundred and thirty dinars. In the currency circulating here in Baghdad, which is under the rule of His Majesty our Master King Ghazi I, may his glory be exalted. Everyone accepted and received, and it came into his possession, and he took the whole amount upon himself as a debt and a loan. And thus said the aforementioned groom to us: "The value of this Ketubah (the dowry) in its entirety—the original, the trousseau, and the increase—along with all the remaining conditions of the Ketubah, I have accepted upon myself and my heirs after me, upon all the best of my property and assets existing under all the heavens, which I have acquired or will acquire, of movable and immovable property. All of them are pledged and obligated to fulfill this entire dowry—the original, the trousseau, and the increase—to be collected from them during my life and after me, even from the clothes upon me." And he took an oath (Qinyan), a complete oath by means of a (handkerchief) which is fit to swear with, regarding all that was mentioned in truth and faithfulness, according to the will of the Creator, may He be exalted, and according to the will of those who swear in truth, and according to our will, to certify and establish all that is written above, by nullifying all existing ideas ⟦against this contract⟧ and by annulling their witnesses, according to the opinion of the Rabbi, the Master Shlomo bin Adret, may his memory be for the end, not as a reliance and not as a mere formality of papers, but as all the valid contract documents used in the ⟦line⟧ Israeli community, written according to the rules and the perfection of the scholars, may their memory be for a blessing.
