GENERAL CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION EXAMINATION OVERSEAS
The statement on the other side of this form shows the grades
awarded to you at the Advanced and/or the Ordinary level in each
subject for which you entered. This information is sent before the
issue of Certificates and the University reserves the right to correct
it. The results of the examination are final and binding on all can-
didates and the University will not, except in its absolute discretion,
enter into correspondence about the results with candidates or their
parents or guardians or other persons claiming to act in loco parentis.
This document is not a Certificate and must not be regarded as
such. An 'X' indicates absence from the examination in a subject.
A hyphen '-' indicates an incomplete result.
Ordinary Level
At this level grades A, C and E are grades of pass in descending
order of merit reading from left to right, and Grades F and H,
followed by the word FAIL, denote failure.
There are no ⟦illegible⟧ tests in the languages at this level.
Advanced Level
At this level grades A, B, C, D and E are grades of pass in des-
cending order of merit, reading from left to right, and grade F,
followed by the word FAIL, denotes failure. Grade O, followed by
ORD, at this level indicates a compensatory Ordinary level pass. The
words FAIL and ORD. apply to the subject as a whole.
In Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Physics and Zoology
two grades are given. The first is the grade given in the
subject as a whole, including the practical test, to the right of this
appears the grade given in the practical test only.
Where a candidate has entered for both Pure Mathematics and
Applied Mathematics an alternative Advanced level pass in
Mathematics (Pure and Applied) may be given if the performance
in Paper 1 of each subject reaches the required standard. An alt-
ernative Advanced level pass in Mathematics (Pure and Applied)
will not be awarded to a candidate absent from any paper of Pure
Mathematics or Applied Mathematics.
There are no oral tests in the languages at this level except for
certain schools in West Africa. For candidates from these schools
there are two grades in French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish.
The first represents the result given in the subject as a whole including
the oral test; to the right of this appears the grade given in the oral
test only. The oral grades are A, B, C, D, E, O and F. Failure in the
oral test does not necessarily indicate failure in the subject as a whole.
